At my words, Markus smiles confusedly. "I've seen you kissing Olivia before. Did she-" "No! No, she didn't force me." Markus' eyes narrow playfully, but it doesn't look genuine. It feels like a performance.

"That was, what... one month in?" "Three weeks and four days. The second time she visited." I blink. Right. Android stuff. "...Okay. By that time, we were fine. We were great, actually!" I laugh at that thought. Everything Olivia related feels like a whole different life.

My boyfriend's eye twitches slightly. I sigh and look down. Staring at his hand and playing with his fingers, I murmur, "did you ever notice how she was always the first one to lean in?" "I did. I assumed it was just your... preferences." "It kinda is?" I look up at your beautiful mismatched eyes, "But the preference is not being kissed." I chuckle bittersweetly and look down again. I smile slightly as your thumb caresses my knuckles fondly.

"Why did you kiss her then?" "I don't know. It felt... like something I'm supposed to do. You'd expect your girlfriend to kiss you, right?" Markus' brows furrow. "Why?" I sigh and shut my eyes tightly. "... That's one of those stupid social traditions."

"I see." Markus' voice is so gentle. It feels like a hug when you're a kid — it's just the right amount of warmth and all the comfort you didn't know you needed.

"Did you ever genuinely want to kiss her? Do you... feel that at all? Sometimes?" I glance up at my love. "Yea... The first time we kissed. It was special. It felt genuine." I take a deep breath, "It was the end of our second date. We were eating cookies, her lips were so messy." I chuckle. "I cleaned them for her. I didn't even intend it like, you know, sexy! I was just cleaning something that was dirty!" Markus' thumb moves tenderly back and forth over my knuckles. I sigh and look down, watching our hands.

"But I don't regret that one. Because that was a real one. A weird one but a real one, nonetheless. I remember looking at her eyes and thinking she was beautiful. Thinking how much I wanted to keep seeing her. I know that one was real. I ended up liking the moment. That's worth something, right?"

I can almost swear I can hear his digital brain running. "Joey..." "No. It's fine. Really." I squeeze his hand gently. "I just... I'd like to understand why. Why are humans and society obsessed with this?" Markus tilts his head confusedly. Like a damn puppy dog. So cute. I chuckle softly, and it makes him smile. "Go on," Markus whispers tenderly. "You're doing great. I understand what you're saying." I take a sharp breath and squeeze his hand, silently thanking my boyfriend for his reassurance. Words are a real struggle for me.

I allow myself to take a moment to simply close my eyes and breathe deeply, holding his hand tightly. When I speak again, my voice is steadier and calmer. "There's this whole thing in our society about first kisses and how many people you've kissed and how many people you kiss in one singular party." Markus nods in understanding.

"And I just hate it so much." I feel my eyes watering. "Why can't I have my first relationship after my 20s and be fine with that? Why is everyone so obsessed with what I do?" I cough and let go of your hand to wipe my tears. Markus' hands hold my shoulders gently but firmly, making it impossible for my body to curl. Which is objectively good.

But now it just pisses me off.

My head is as lowered as physically possible as I sob. "Joey. Sweetheart, it's okay. Nobody is coming after you. Olivia isn't coming back. Ever again. You're free now."

It's true. I am free now.

"Society is... what's the word? A jerk?" Markus smirks proudly at his own joke. "No, that's you." I chuckle and look up with a small smile. His hands immediately cup and caress my wet cheeks. "I'm the jerk?" I nod, smiling wider. "And why am I a jerk, sweetheart?" "Because you messed with your girlfriend's head?" "To help your spiraling?" "Well... Yea." "And I'm still a jerk?" "Leave me alone, Markus!" I chuckle and raise my hands to his cheeks. I take a deep breath. My thumbs caress your cheeks gently as we fall into a comfortable silence.

"Can I kiss you?" I whisper. "Of course," my love replies quickly. "No. No, darling, I mean... kiss you." "Oh... Are you sure?" I nod. "Because you don't have to-" "Love. I am." Markus nods. "Okay," he whispers.

OC TIMELINE: jade/joey manfred

CHILDHOOD

Jade was born in 2011 of a quick romance between the famous painter Carl Manfred and a fan. Jade was raised with both of their parents, though not dating. Carl got the full guard of Jade when her mother died in 2020. By the same time, Carl became the leading figurehead of the Neo-Symbolist movement.

Growing up, Jade and Carl were very close and healthy. Carl used to teach art to his kid after school.

YOUNG ADULT

At the age of 18, in 2029, Jade finished school. For the next three years, she wrote books for kids and in his free time, Jade would make statues as a hobby at his father's art studio.

At the age of 21, in 2032, Jade bought her first house and moved out. Her relationship with Carl obviously changed but they still stayed as close as possible.

2033

In that year a lot happened. Carl had a car accident that made him paraplegic. With his father now in a wheelchair, Jade moves back into the mansion. She stops working to take care of him full time.

2034

Carl's friend Elijah Kamski (creator of CyberLife, the enterprise of androids) gives him an android RK200 prototype who is named Markus, to be his caretaker.

At first both Jade and Carl don't trust Markus, but they don't have a choice. Markus proves himself to be extremely helpful and well intended — he only intends to accomplish his tasks. He's a machine, after all.

This year, Jade starts creating statues and paintings full time.

2035

At the age of 24, Jade gets her first girlfriend, Olivia Chester (oc).

With Carl being safe and stable — Markus is taking good care of him, Jade moves back into her own house.

Olivia moves in. She was so obsessed with Jade that she very often wouldn't let her visit his father. Their relationship had withered severely. At one point it was reduced only to a daily and quick phone call.

After a few months they broke up on bad terms. They never speak again.

2036

Reconstruction of father-son relationship.

This year, Jade visits her father almost daily. She then gets to know Markus better and respect him not as a machine but as a person.

Jade starts writing books again, occasionally selling paintings.

2037

Everything is fine again. Jade moves back into Carl's mansion. She paints with him like when she was a kid, and teaches him sculpture.

Jade realises Carl's and Markus' relationship has grown into something strong and comfortable. Carl had been teaching Markus about art like he did to Jade. And she is fine with it.

Her relationship with Markus also evolves and deepens. Later that year, they start dating in secret.

2038

Jade is 27 years old when she realises gender isn't important or frankly, real. So one day, she's talking to Markus about it and she jokes about changing her name into Joey. From that moment on, his name is Joey. Jade sometimes, since he loves that name too. Markus was never a man — just a machine — so he doesn't acknowledge a gender within himself either.

Markus and Joey tell Carl about their relationship. And after the initial surprise, he is fine with it.

NOVEMBER 5th

One day, Joey's junkie older brother Leo attacks Markus and Carl when he isn't home. Carl dies of a heart stroke on the spot. When the police arrives, Leo tells them Markus hurt Carl. The police shoots him.

NOVEMBER 6th

Markus wakes up in the dump at 3 am with a few body parts lacking. He replaces them there with other dying androids. Now his right eye is blue and the left one is the original one — green. Markus also rips his LED off.

After he returns to the city, Markus looks for Jade, and together they go to Jericho — an abandoned ship where deviant androids can be free.

The clock on her grey wall marked 11:07 p.m. when Melody took her first sip of coffee.

She had just finished unpacking and doing two weeks worth of laundry. Well, kinda. But anyway, the washing machine was the fullest it's ever been and Mel would only hope her old neighbour downstairs wouldn't complain about the noise tonight. She could handle Mr Jones tomorrow, but not now.

Melody sat on her very missed blue couch and zapped through twenty boring channels while emptying her favourite mug quicker than she wanted. Mel lazily fetched her phone and she texted the family group chat: "guys im very much alive & safe at home. im tired from the trip, but we'll talk tomorrow. dad remember im coming over for lunch, you better cook my eggs how i like! MWAH!!!"

About thirty seconds after sending that text, Mel’s phone buzzed. Her dad reacted with 👍 to the message. No surprises. She smiled.

Mel was heading to her bedroom when her phone started spamming notifications. “LOOK UP!” “IN THE SKY!” “IT’S A BIRD!” “IT’S A PLANE!” “IT’S……” “drumroll please!”

“clark what did i tell you about flying while typing?” Mel giggled while opening the window for her boyfriend.

“Who said i was flying? Did you forget you gave me a copy of your key?” a warm voice joked behind her. Melody jumped and turned around with a hand over her racing heart. “Clark! Oh my god!” He grined proudly, “Hm, some say i am, but i personally wouldn’t go so far.”

Giggling, Melody hugged her boyfriend tightly. “I missed you, Kent.” “Well, i didn’t. I was always listening to your heartbeat. You were always with me.”

“You're awful!" She pulled back to look at Clark, and he looked down at her right back. “I noticed your heartbeat increase on the ninth night, doll.”

If this was a movie, the lights would have changed. The camera position would have changed. And especially, the soundtrack would have changed.

"What? What are you talking about?”

He smiled. He knew her perfectly.

Clark brushed a lock of hair behind Mel's ear and leaned in to whisper, “I know how badly you missed me. At first i thought something was wrong. You got me worried, pretty girl. Your heartbeat increasing, your breathing quickening. You all by yourself in the hotel room.”

His hands slowly lowered from her shoulders, gentle fingertips tracing her arms, occasionally squeezing them just for the look on her face, just for the changes in her breathing.

"And then what happened? My girl whispers my name in such a muffled manner! Tell me, baby. Was your pretty face against a pillow or that red sweater you stole from me?"

“Clark…”

"Yes, honey?"

Mel swallowed dry.

Clark took her hands and walked backwards to sit on her bed. “Can I tell you a little secret?" She simply nodded as she carefully straddled her boyfriend. His hands caressed her waist gently.

"When I realised what you were actually doing, pretty girl… I joined in.”

"You… joined…"

“Yep."

“From Metropolis?"

“From home."

Aizawa announces as soon as he steps in, like always.

"Hey, dad. How was your day?" Keys locking the door and footsteps are heard around. Cameron discreetly closes the bedroom door. "You're home early today. Everything okay?"

"Your dad had the honour of giving my class a lesson today. It went surprisingly well." A soft giggle is forced out while Cam hurriedly looks for the only bra available. It must be hidden under those hoodies. Come on, Cam, fetch!

A firm knock on the door freezes the worried teen. "Is everything okay? Why's the door closed?"

"I'm fine, dad! Just changing!" No footsteps outside the bedroom can be heard, only inside. Cam quickly hides the masculine perfume behind the bookshelf as silently as possible. Ever so slowly — hopeful dad won't notice — the window is slide open. Please go away, beautiful smell. And thank you for your blessing.

"Have you eaten?" Aizawa calls out as he finally walks away. "I was about to order takeout!"

He scoffs tenderly, "Not anymore. I'm having dinner with you tonight. Do you wanna make a pizza together?"

Cameron's hands stop when those words hit the eardrums. "Yea, dad. I'd love to."

The sounds of dad getting ready in the kitchen feel like heaven compared to the heaviness of this room. The perfume is hidden. That monstrosity is in sight. The window is open. The only thing left to do is change from my best friend to a... bra. This may be the hardest part of the day.

Cam sighs deeply before painfully removing the binder.

After a few deep breaths just staring at it, the binder finally put to sleep again under the bed. Always hopeful and eager to see it after school.

Cam doesn't know what's worse: taking the binder off or putting a bra on. Both actions feel deeply like defeat and betrayal. But he knows it's for his own safety. Sometimes Cameron considers telling Aizawa he's trans. He wouldn't be upset. Cam simply is scared. Life being cis would be easier.

When Cam finishes dressing up, he refuses to look at the mirror. Extra pain isn't needed. Instead, Cam follows his dad into the kitchen. He's already softening the pizza dough into a large circle. When Aizawa sees his kid, a soft smile automatically emerges on his face.

The dynamic duo talk and banter tenderly as they cook two pizzas: one for them and another one because "your dad and sister gotta eat too."

After a precious and delicious dinner together, Cam leaves his dad doing the dishes to take a shower. And of course he also set the table for the rest of the family to eat later.

Comfortable in his fluffy Shadow The Hedgehog pajamas, Cameron enters his bedroom. There, he finds his dad closing the window. "You forgot it open again, kid," Aizawa mutters before he turns around.

"I'm surprised those still fit you." "You know better than to hope I'll grow out of my Shadow phase." "I'd never hope that. I simply assumed. You liking the hedgehog is fine with me. No need to change, kid."

Cameron presses his lips together as he fights back tears. Aizawa knows how hard it is for his kid to be emotionally open and vulnerable, so he respects him and doesn't make the first move. Instead he waits for Cam's time.

"Thank you, daddy." "You're welcome, kiddo. Anytime."

Aizawa pets Cam's head tenderly. Each time, it's exactly four strokes. Cameron closes his eyes and lets his face relax.

"Hm."

Oh no. Please let it be my imagination.

Aizawa’s hand abandons his kid’s hair after a beat. Cam’s lungs pause, his eyes close tighter for a millisecond before he looks down.

“Why is this on the floor, kid?"

If you're cis, you'll never know how terrified Cameron felt in this moment.

“I didn't know you'd bought new bras."

Why did his tongue suddenly feel so heavy? Cam's secret binder is held between the two of them. Aizawa looks for an answer on his kid's face as Cameron desperately tries not to seem desperate.

It's painfully obvious how hard Cam is trying to escape the gaze. So, understanding, Aizawa looks away. Cam's jaw is only beginning to relax when his dad — who was now folding the “bra" — speaks up again.

"Why does it have a zipper? Kid, are you sure you bought the right size? This looks so inflexible and tight. Doesn't it hurt you?”

When he looks up, his world crushes. His baby is quietly ugly sobbing.

Aizawa gently guides Cameron towards the bed. They both sit on it without a word. Cam sobs quietly as his dad caresses his inback.

Minutes pass with pats and tender reassurance. Eventually Cameron is able to take a deep breath and look into his father's eyes.

“Can you… give it to me, please?”

Carefully — as if it's a sacred object — Aizawa hands it to his kid.

“It's not a bra, dad. I-It's called a binder.”

Aizawa waits patiently. He nods once when Cam glances.

“The difference… Well, the porpoise. It's to, erm, make people's chest look smaller. Flatter.”

And with those words, the smallest crunch appears between Aizawa's brows. He's still silent. There's more.

“I bought it some time ago. I… like my body better when my chest is flat.”

Cameron takes a deep breath staring at his beloved binder on his lap.

“Dad, I'm trans. I'm not a girl. I'm sorry. I can't be your little girl."

His hands grip the binder as if it could save him. He doesn't even realise when he begins to curl down and cry again. Please wake me up now.

Cameron is so deeply into his mind that he doesn't immediately feel Aizawa's hand on his back again.

“Kid. You were never my little girl. You were always more than that. You're my kid. My child. I know you and I could never ask for a better kid.”

Aizawa hugs his shoulder as Cam sobs against his chest.

“Shhh, don't apologise. It's okay, pumpkin. How would you like me to call you?”

“I want to keep this name. Cameron. I like it."

“Okay, Cam."

“And I'd like you to use masculine pronouns for me, please. And terms. And I know it can be a lot all at once so I don't expect-"

“You're fine, son. Everything's okay. You're my kid. It doesn't change anything.”

"this isn't the end. we're not over, jinx. i promise. i will fight for you and i will find you again. i will save you, my love. i will-" i choke on my tears. you nod and close your eyes. "it's okay. let go. it's okay." "i love you." "i know, bats." i nod.

i kiss your forehead and catch the view of your lips lifting up slightly. "love, can i-" "yes," jinx sighs. i hold your chin and kiss you the most tenderly and softly possible. it reminds me of our first kiss — hesitant, slow and sweet. i pull away and keep my eyes closed. i brush my nose on yours and smile. "i love you..." i nod and caress your cheek. "i love you, freak." you scoff, smiling lazily, sleepily. i shut my eyes tighter. i can feel your cheek softening under my palm. your smile is fading. you're letting go. there's nothing else to do. nothing else to say. and nothing anyone can do. i kiss your forehead and finally look at you. you're... sleeping. my love is finally resting. you can finally rest in peace.

"if you throw that snowball, you're declaring war."

jinx warned as she noticed my attempt to roll snow. "I don't even know how to make a snowball!" i laugh nervously. the snow i was holding starts falling apart from my gloved hands.

"you're terrible at this," jinx laughs with no real bite as she walks towards her lover. i smile up apologetically, glancing at the blue haired girl. with a mischievous smirk, jinx slaps my hands, making all the remaining snow join the one on the ground. "hey! i almost got it this time!" i widen my eyes, looking at jinx with a surprised expression. "no, you didn't, silly. look," she picks up two handfuls of snow and starts molding it. i watch in awe and murmur, as if to myself, "how do you do it so easily?" to what my lover just shrugs her shoulders and giggles.

"try doing like this," i nod and pick up a good amount of snow. jinx gently brushes away the excess and nods, indicating me to proceed. so i do my best to mimic her early actions. "like this?" i glance at her, seeking approval. "ya are catching up nicely! im starting to think you just wanted me to teach you my amazing techniques," i giggle at her teasing smirk.

my lover throws her snowball up and punches it as it falls back. i shake my head smiling, watching her. oh, how i love you. while she's distracted, i throw my sloppily-made-but-good-enough snowball at her. she laughs and turns around to face me, "oh you did not! i warned you, bats!" i giggle like a little kid but my winning sensation is quickly replaced by regret as i see jinx grab snow while grinning mischievously. i run away shouting, "no, no, no! I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" while jinx laughs and rolls an unknown amount of snowballs. "i was so generous! i even warned you!"

i feel a snowball hit my jacket and yell, "oh shut up!" my lover keeps laughing, "i hate you!" i shout and feel another snowball, "love ya too, batsy!" i groan exaggeratedly loud for her to hear and grab snow, struggling to make a snowball.

i glance at jinx who has been oddly quiet. i don't find her and pause for a second before focusing back on my snowball. as i manage to make it good enough i look back to where my lover was, still not seeing her. I'm about to call out for her as i hear my favourite voice behind me, "whatcha up to, gorgeous?" i jump, startled, making my perfect snowball fall, therefore be destroyed. "damn it!" I drop my arms, "i give up!"

jinx laughs and wraps her arms around my waist from behind, "you can't just call white flag during war and expect them to let you, silly." "I don't care. you'll let me." "will i?" "of course you will. you love me sooo much," i smirk. "maybe. but i also love throwing snow at you sooo much," jinx lays her head on my shoulder, facing my neck. i caress my lover's hands. we stay like this for a long moment: jinx breathing on my neck while holding my waist as i caress her hands.

"i love you, freak," i whisper, not because it's a secret but because it's fragile. bluebat is not fragile but it definitely feels precious, for both of us in our own ways. "love you too, bats," jinx mumbles against my skin.

My hands move from your nape to cup your cheeks; my thumbs caress your plastic skin immediately. The words aren't needed anyway. But the facial expression you make makes me smile gently. "You know?" "Yeah. Yes, love. I understand." Your beautiful face softens again. A tender kiss is planted on my wrist before you press your forehead against mine fondly.

"I wish all humans were like you." "Why would you want seven billion girlfriends and boyfriends and theythemfriends?" I smirk. You pull back and raise an eyebrow, smiling so beautifully. "Theythemfriends?" "Sure. Theythemfriends. Is that the part you want to discuss?" I watch as your gentle smile turns into a playful smirk. "Sure. God, how I love you. "Oh, shut up! You know what I meant!" "I really don't, sweetheart. What did you mean?" And just like that, the whole world stops. Obviously it doesn't really stop. I can feel you gently tucking a strand of hair behind my ear and cupping my cheek. I can feel how your thumb moves so fondly across my skin, like every time. Like I'm the most precious thing in the whole world.

"Joey?" "You... had never called me that before." "Called you what?" You raise your stupid eyebrow and make a face I know so well. You're beautiful. "Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about, jerk." A huge grin is born among your beautiful features. I can't help but smile. My gaze wanders across your face in innocent appreciation and soon I forget what we were even saying. Or not saying. It's not like we hide anything from each other anyway.

I may be the only human at Jericho and of course androids can communicate among their kind in an absurdly efficient and quick way but no one beats the connection you and I have, Markus. Maybe I don't know you as deeply as your fellas, but I've known you since day one. We've grown together.

I like thinking I know details about you that no one else does. Like your favourite chess piece being the pawn. You say it's underappreciated, overlooked. "It's the one that starts the game and objectively the weakest, moving like that. But it can become anything when it reaches the other side. One pawn can change everything." Also how you appreciate orchestras, even though you don't really understand how pleasant music is for us humans. Or your original eye colour — mud green. Innocent, mysterious but always well-intended. Or how you like to kiss wrists. Or maybe just my wrists. I like both ideas.

Markus had told me to ask anything, so I asked the most human thing I could think about. "That's a tricky one," he smiles softly. "What is a heartbreak, really?"

My brows knit for a second. I know androids know all vocabulary and concepts. What do you mean? Before I can ask, Markus continues, "You humans only consider romantic heartbreaks. But I'd argue there are many kinds of heartbreaks. Like when you heard that stray kitten crying, Jade. I saw your eyes tearing up. Wasn't it heartbreaking?" That disarms me and I stutter. That's a way to see the world I had never considered before. Markus' pretty smile widens, and he continues, "I had been denying my emotions until recently, so it's still a bit blurry." I nod.

"I remember feeling very weird when I saw Carl crying for the first time. I had this... need to make it stop, to make him feel better. But it wasn't a normal need like I feel when I receive a new task. No. It was urgent. It was like my existence depended on it. Seeing your father cry made me feel like something inside of me was lacking and the void poisoned me. That day is the one that better fits your question."
