Anthony Hurd (American, 1975) - You Have This Hold Over Me (2025)
Gotta say it's double extra creepy as hell lately sharing a material reality w/ people who just fucking reject straightforward factual information they dislike for whatever reason or can't integrate w/o tripping over their emotions. I mean, it's never not creepy as hell, though it's getting creepier-as-heller as I'm more and more exposed to someone dying from dementia against their will, desperate to hold onto reality, intellectual difficulty and emotional discomfort be damned. Why live like you've got a neurodegenerative disorder when you don't? Why not use your mind while you can? Be uncomfortable, be upset for a moment or two. But be real.
Lot's wife is like the original looking backer
as always women's contributions are erased and forgotten
What doesn’t get talked about enough is that, all those 40-something years, Rocky had all the supplies he needed to go back home. He had the fuel, he had the food. But he didn’t. He tried and tried and tried. He kept going. He took measurements, gathered data, built new Astrophage samplers but could never get it right. He maintained the Blip-A, a ship that was built in a hurry and just kept breaking, for over FORTY YEARS. When Grace found him, Rocky wasn’t just sitting idle in orbit. He was still working, still trying, he hadn’t given up. He was tracking the stars, probably to watch for a potential second mission from Erid, when he spotted the Hail Mary in reverse-thrust. Rocky calls Grace brave. Truly, Grace is. But I’d compare Rocky more to Stratt. How much of yourself would you be willing to sacrifice to save your planet? Rocky was willing to stay at Tau Ceti for the rest of his life until he either found a solution, or died.
btw if you are friends with someone and you have the kind of dynamic where you can tease each other you also need to be nice. just so we're all aware. you also have to be nice with your words on top of it. like with your words. use your words. you should tell them with your words when you like something about them. if you are scared of being too sincere or vulnerable that is not an excuse to not be nice to someone. also you should work on that. ok are we all on the same page
Cytherea probably thought killing Dulcinea was a merciful thing to do and that she was doing her a favour, because if Dulcie became a lyctor she would suffer the same fate as her. "she was a sweet little thing. i really had wanted to do something for her [...] don't look at me like that. i'm not a monster."
i love palamades sextus because it's like. he's "the greatest necromancer of his generation". he's jealous of an eighteen year old. he's in a codependant relationship with his cousin. he's writing erotic wlw fanfic on the wallpaper of his hallucinated River bubble. he rewrote known necrophysics. he was homewrecked. he finds those little outfits that nurses wear and strong work ethic and high test scores sexy. he's been in love with a woman seven years older than him since he was eight. he gave an ancient saint turbo cancer. he blew himself up. he's dead. he's alive. he's banned from selling erotic wlw fanfic he conceived in his necrophysically impossible River bubble. he's taking care of the dead soul of the earth in the body of a girl who lobotomized herself. he never forgets anything. and he isn't even technically the main character. NO ONE is doing it quite like him.
He isn't even technically the main character AND!! He's the ONLY character to technically appear in EVERY SINGLE novel and short story. (By which I mean. He doesn't have a direct role in As Yet Unsent, but he IS attached to his bones and there IS a point made of Cam carrying them and fighting people to keep them. He's technically there lmao. And every other work he plays a significant role, with even his very brief appearance in HtN being a huge turning point.)
He also dies in every single book. I love him so much.
Harrow wip thats eating me alive
i love her so much why does she have to suffer so much in the book i dont like this. She deserves so much, everything even.
This is the best description I’ve heard for this method, I always thought it was bullshit because I never heard a description that actually explained how to do this other than “tap your head 20 times”.
I have anxiety-induced hissing, which sounds/feels different from sound-induced tinnitus (which I have also experience). Sound-based tinnitus actually sounds like you’re “hearing” something in your ears, whilst the hissing I have feels like it’s “inside my head”, if that makes sense. But this technique still helps!!
Here’s a visual I found because I couldn’t understand the instructions well
My ringing just went away for the first time in years. What is this blissful quiet.
wait wait i gotta try this, i don’t think i’ve had Actual Silence since i was like 5
HOW THE FUCK
Reblogging to save a life, and also because, even if you don’t have tinnitus, this is totally worth trying if you like new sensory experiences.
depiction is not the same as glorification and I need people to get that
depiction from the POV of a character who thinks it’s okay is still not glorification
Really obsessed with this exchange
For those curious, they're talking about The Legend of Khiimori.
Finally I have it
Can you believe this was published fifty years ago?
Also can you believe that two different libraries wouldn’t let me ILL it? I had to hunt down a used copy on the intraweebers
Until recently... Law was seen as a reflection and reaction to social values and behavior patterns (that is, as a dependent variable) rather than having in its own right some positive impact on the social order. Recent uses of the law as a conscious instrument for promotion of social change (as in racial desegregation and equal opportunity policies) helped produce a rethinking of this passive concept of law. But in the area of crime and delinquency analysis, it has taken sociologists a long time to heed the wisdom of Hermann Mannheim's sensible comment:
"We have made considerable efforts to discover what sort of person the offender is and why he has broken the law, and we rack our brains to find out what to do with him... Hardly ever do we pause for a moment to examine critically the contents of the very law the existence of which alone makes it possible for the individual to offend against it."
Oh wow. Ohhhh. Oh I gotta sit down. Wait, I'm already sitting down.
We often prefer to see crime and delinquency as alien phenomena, as somehow existing outside of society, involving attacks on society. These disturbing acts, we would like to think, do not reflect the normal workings of our social system, but rather represent some kind of aberrational malfunctioning of the system. Were it true, such an idea might well be reassuring, but clearly it is not. Crime and delinquency, along with other problems, are integral features of the social order and cannot be explained by reference to some "external" or "abnormal" phenomena or occurrences. Unfortunately, the persisting unwillingness to face up to this fact (and the related fact that legislation itself "produces" crime and delinquency) has even led some sociologists to commit what they term the "evil causes evil" fallacy. This fallacy, that "bad" consequences must have "bad" causes, blinds one to the ways in which socially disturbing behavior may be grounded in aspects of the dominant social structure and prevailing value systems.

A corollary of this reasoning is the belief that such problems as crime and delinquency always require special solutions... One particularly unfortunate result of this is an inordinate focus on the individual deviants or "offenders" themselves. Such individuals are seen as being basically different from nonoffenders...and it is in this basic differentness that the "causes" of delinquency problems are believed to lie.
maybe I gotta lie down
