i took elvish in school and i fucking hated it. the teacher was like 700 years old and he'd like take us on field trips to sit on the banks of babbling brooks and watch the fall of sunlight through the leaves. my friends in spanish class were like conjugating verbs and shit and meanwhile i was in an old-growth forest being overcome with awe at the sight of a majestic stag. like uhh yeah mr autumnheart when are we gonna learn like any grammar "listen to the murmur of the wind in the treetops, and you shall find the grammar you seek" like fuck dude your pedagogy leaves much to be desired

People do not believe in extant dinosaurs or dragons or mermaids or Bigfoot or Atlantis because they're stupid I think they know full well it doesn't exist. But isn't it fun to think about... The world is all discovered now and we put trash in the ocean and we put trash in space and where we didn't put trash we put extremely powerful cameras to take photos. This is GOOD!!!! But you can no longer wonder what creatures lurk beyond the fog because we know. The creatures have scientific names now. The sense of wonder is gone and now we all have jobs and adult problems and it was much nicer being a child who could believe that dinosaurs still exist in the amazon rainforest and we haven't got to them with our diggers and choppers and we never will. Freud came to reject his seduction theory – the belief that neurotic symptoms had at their heart a repressed memory of early sexual trauma – in favor of the internal, Oedipal model, whereby the child’s own incestuous sexual impulses were the source of repression. Laplanche proposes a return. It is not that he believes that every adult was sexually abused as a child; he instead uses the seduction theory to describe something more subtle. The way in which the child is imprinted, from the beginning of their life, by the enigmatic touch and language of an adult, which are both impingements (at the very least) and vital to life. Care, prohibition, tenderness, irritation: all arrive as messages the child cannot yet parse but wants to understand. A life is spent constructing workable ‘translations’ of what these messages must have meant. Analysis cannot recover an original meaning, but it may loosen the translations that hardened into necessity. Laplanche calls this ‘detranslation’. Not re-reading, but de-reading. Not necessarily because these translations are wrong, but because they do not serve the analysand. They are too rigid or punitive, restricting pleasure or freedom. In her 1999 therapy memoir, A Dialogue on Love, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick describes her therapist’s best comments as amounting to one message: ‘It ain’t necessarily so.’ For Laplanche, a ‘good’ re-reading is one that allows the analysand to be more open to life and its vicissitudes, rather than better adapted to social forms. It is strictly provisional, part of an ongoing practice of making and unmaking.

personally i do not prefer when stories engaging with complicated topics attempt to make themselves good educational resources on said complicated topics

and i understand that sometimes it's a very thin line between giving a realistic depiction of a serious topic and ending up in after-school special mode, but i also notice that no one is doing this when a character gets the flu (which kills many people every year) and PERSONALLY i don't love the patterns i'm vaguely sensing about which experiences can be depicted normally and which experiences must always be a learning opportunity
