But what if they just happened to cast Andrew Garfield as the boyfriend in Deadpool 2, and someone in the movie is like, âhey, you look just like Peter Par-â but Deadpool tackles them before they can finish and then just looks directly at the camera and is like, âthis is my boyfriend, Pete Parkley, and he is definitely not Spiderman because that would be a serious breach of licensing rights.â and then he just grabs Pete and tows him away by the suspicious red spandex collar poking out over the top of his T-shirt

I understand how european bloggers are frustrated with americans and us centrism but isn't saying that "racism in europe is different than the usa" ignoring the similarities? for example italians face discrimination in europe, italians faced discrimination in the usa, black people face discriminiation in usa and in europe, also middle eastern people face discrimination is europe and the usa. Like romani people face discrimination in the usa as well. like there are large similarities.
Hi anon.
Okay, when Europeans say that racism works differently in Europe, they arenât saying that racism against black people, middle eastern people or romani people donât exist and we are not ignoring those similarities - literally no sane European will ever try to argue that, and I certainly will be the last to do so, I have never done that in any of my posts about this issue, I am never going to start and I follow no Europeans who do.
Where Europeans get frustrated is when you have US bloggers insisting that their definition of racism (which is mostly about colourism and comes from their history) can be applied everywhere the same. When Americans insist that you cannot be racist against white people because racism is power plus prejudice (or whatever have you) and white people are always in power and therefore cannot be discriminated against.. well this is where you lose Europeans. Because âwhitenessâ in Europe simply does not operate the same way; to put it in simple words, insisting that white people always held power and were never oppressed erases a huge part of European history, erases the sufferings of many people/countries and of course we arenât okay with that - nobody would.
I have mentioned the Polish being denied the right to exist many times as well as the Greekâs genocide at the hands of the Turks. I could also mention the Albanian massacres, the oppression of the Irish by the British, the prejudices against Slavic people or the many invasion of Finland by Russia, and those are only examples. Racism in Europe simply isnât only about colour, itâs also about ethnicity (and classism, really), many people who would be seen as simply âwhiteâ in the US, would not in Europe and would face and have faced many discriminations for being the âwrong kind of whiteâ so to speak.
No one in Europe will deny that black people.. etc⌠will face racism here, but we are uncomfortable with the way Americans will keep pushing on us the idea that white people have always held power and that therefore you cannot be prejudiced against them, simply because Europeâs history do not go in that sense and we witness racism between many European ethnicities all the time. We have a problem with Americans trying to push their constructs and definition of what racism is on us - a definition that comes from their particular history of slavery and segregation - and insist that if we disagree then it must be because weâre racist ourselves.
In Europe you can be racist against white people (including non white people against white people btw - looking at Turkey again), and this is where we are frustrated with Americans trying to force their definition of racism as solely being about white people discriminating against non-white, and with the way they are ignoring that power is fluid and will be held by different people depending of where and when you are. Europeâs different history and social background will mean that those issues will have different dynamics attached to them and wonât operate or be dealt with the same and we wish this was acknowledged instead of dismissed just to try to make us fit in their neat little American centred âsocial justiceâ bow.
that isnât racism. theyâre all white. ethnicity is NOT the same as race. you can discriminate against an ethnicity, but it ISNâT racism. bad post.
@scp682
I have answered this crap so many times now itâs really starting to tire me. Letâs repeat myself for the tenth time;
Racism is a social construct, therefore it was constructed differently depending of where and when you are; as a result what constitute a race of people will vary from place to place and era to era. This concept wasnât set in stone when US history and the constructs that were eventually built from it began existing, because guess what? The earth didnât start spinning around 235 years ago.Â
In Europe people did not and do not see each other as the same (and yes that include racially) just because they happen to share the same pigmentation. How would you explain Aryanism otherwise? Please enlighten me. Racism isnât constructed around colourism everywhere, because not everywhere had USAâs history of segregation and Jim Crowâs laws.Â
Stop partly exonerating of their crimes those who enslaved, killed, discriminated and genocided people they regarded as inferior by acting like they somehow made the distinction youâre making above. Do you think the Nazis stopped and thought âoh well, at least we arenât racistâ when they sent the Slavs to death camps? Of course not. They themselves spoke of a ârassenkampfâ no such distinction was made because in Europe racism isnât constructed around US-american colourist constructs. Such a wild concept to grasp I know!Â
And before you want to label any more of my posts as âbadâ without even bothering to develop your point, go read all the replies I gave to the exact argument youâre making and come back to me when you are done, they are far more developed than this one and I have no desire to debate in circle over this any longer: here, here, here, here, here and here.Â
Literally no one forced you to respond to this, so I donât see why youâre whining about having to âtire you outâ, but okay.
Racism is a social construct developed by white people. Again, racism exists, and so does discrimination based on ethnic groups. Because white people made up the concept of races, and because I myself am not white, I am going to refer to those who come from the bulk of the European continent âwhiteâ.
Aryanism was a very flawed concept and the bulk majority of white people didnât believe it. Only nazis believed it. It divided up white people into several races to say that one was better than another. That concept didnât last very long, either.
The crimes that Nazi Germany did against other groups of peoples could have been considered racism by Germany, during that time, yes. Those crimes could probably still be considered racism, but it just doesnât happen anymore.
Just because one group of people considers another group of people inferior, while being in the same CURRENT idea of what race is, that is not racism. By that idea, every war that occured in Europeâs past would have been racism. Each side would always see the other as inferior. Thatâs the whole point of nationalism, to see outsiders as inferior.
The point is, regardless of the past, white people currently cannot experience racism. As I have stated before, they can experience discrimination based on nation of origin or by ethnic group, but thatâs not racism. Racism is exclusive to those who are not white, and thatâs really final.
Also, white people canât experience racism because theyâre the ones that invented the conept of race.
If youâre so angry about posts about racism in the UNITED STATES, go make your own posts about racism in Europe.
I shouldnât have even gave you the time of day to reply to this, considering you live in Europe and youâre probably white. (if youâre not white, I apologize) You donât have the qualifications to tell me what is racism and what is not. Sorry.
By making posts like these, youâre undermining the actual REAL racism that POC experience. I donât give a shit about white tears when thereâs people dying from the expoitations of white people.
tl;dr: White people may have experienced racism when the definition of race was different in the past, but now they do not experience racism, and canât experience racism.
If youâre mad about US-centric ideas of racism, you could just not worry about it because itâs US-centric. Itâs our problem. Go away.
Holy hell, I donât think you could have given me a more American centred answer if you actively tired. Hold and behold people, this is exactly what US centrism looks like. This answer is such a caricature of the typical Murican who canât comprehend that his or her country doesnât in fact constitute the worldâs default that it would be funny if so much ignorance wasnât so sad. Just what do they teach you in your schools? Iâm legitimately curious.Â
Letâs go over this point, by point, shall we?
âRacism is a social construct developed by white people. Again, racism exists, and so does discrimination based on ethnic groups. Because white people made up the concept of races, and because I myself am not white, I am going to refer to those who come from the bulk of the European continent âwhiteâ. â
So, what we see ourselves as doesnât matter uh? Only Muricansâ voices have any value, they teach you life that bunch. Do you hear that people? Your thousands of years of history, the identity that you have built from it as a result, the struggles you may sometimes have faced⌠etcâŚetc⌠all those things? Well they donât matter, Muricans get to decide for you of your own identity because as we all know their opinions are gospel. Got it.Â
As for that first point you make⌠my god, again so much sheer willful ignorance would be funny if it wasnât so harmful. NO racism as a social constructs was not invented nor solely practiced by âwhite peopleâ. What about the struggles of non Han Chinese people in China? The conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda? The crimes of Imperial Japan? The Arab slave trade? What about the Ottoman empire, its subjugation and genocide of a large portion of the Balkans? Are all those things - all the sufferings of those people - to be ignored because they donât fit your world view? Please do tell me, oh great American, you who get to decide how the world has to be perceived by every single person on this earth because your constructs are to be universally accepted even by those who donât share your history?
âThose crimes could probably still be considered racism, but it just doesnât happen anymore.â
Excuse me? First, I find rather interesting how history is relevant when it feeds your world view but suddenly become just âa thing of the pastâ when inconvenient to you. But independently from that âit just doesnât happen anymoreâ? WHAT? It does still happen. Being a Greek still wonât give you the same social status as being a Swede, the north still has disdain for the south, the Slavs, Balkan countries and more widely the East are still regarded as inferior, Ethnic European Muslim groups such as the Albanian, Kosovar or Chechen still face discrimination (the second Chechen war only date back from 1999, for example), hatred for Jews (including European Jews) is still happening today, RIGHT NOW. Donât you dare saying âIt just doesnât happen anymoreâ because for many of those people it is still a day to day reality, and just because said reality is inconvenient to you as it challenge your comfortable belief that everything operate in term of Murica, doesnât give you the right to erase their struggles and sufferings.Â
That kind of ethnic racism in Europe didnât start nor end with the Nazis, and just because people arenât sent to death camp anymore and it isnât currently as bad as it can be doesnât mean it suddenly stopped existing. There isnât one kind of white in Europe; people have suffered and still suffer for being the wrong kind because âwhitenessâ doesnât operate the same, pigmentation wasnât the main factor when it came to differentiate the âotherâ from the âsameâ and it still isnât in many ways, and yes that include racially.Â
âwhile being in the same CURRENT idea of what race is, that is not racism. (âŚ) White people may have experienced racism when the definition of race was different in the past, but now they do not experience racism, and canât experience racism. â
And what is that âcurrent idea of what race isâ, please do tell me? The American one? But this is just it, and for someone who supposedly read my post you are sure good at spectacularly missing the main point. The current idea of what race is in the USA isnât valid everywhere because your country doesnât constitute the worldâs default. Not every country will be built according to your history and constructs and therefore racialisation wonât be built around those very particular colourist constructs everywhere. Is it clearer now?
I have already proved above that racism based on ethnicity IS NOT a thing of the past, in Europe it still exists (same for Asia or Africa btw) in addition to colourism because our history is different and therefor so are our social constructs, both are real problems that we need to solve and you arenât helping by acting like acknowledging the existence of one somehow detract from the other. It doesnât.Â
âIf youâre so angry about posts about racism in the UNITED STATES, go make your own posts about racism in Europe.â Â Â
I am doing that right NOW. And what is your reaction to it? Pushing your constructs down my throats as if they were the blueprint for the world, trying to Americansplain me about my own continent and the issues that exist within it, trying to teach me and every Europeans about who they are and what is their reality when I bet you have never even set a foot on that side of the pond and telling me to go away because I dare to talk about what racism is and how it was constructed outside of your country.Â
I am angry exactly because that attitude is plaguing this website all over; Europeans canât talk about what affects them without Americans like you butting in and trying to teach them life. So no offense, but I am not the one coming into a post that isnât about me and trying to yell louder than the people concerned about how none of their struggles are real and that only âme, myself and Iâ counts. So out of the two of us Iâm not the one who should shut up and go away, you are.Â
And finally, yes no one forced me to respond, but since your crap appeared in my notes and Iâm sort of allergic to bullshits, I couldnât help myself.Â
ps: You havenât made the effort to go read any of the posts I linked, have you?
ps 2: No I donât think every European wars were about racism, but it doesnât mean none of the atrocities that were committed throughout history were about it either. Itâs not an âeither / orâ situation, nuances, learn some.Â
Iâll just be sitting in this corner sipping tea and side-eyeing âGreek genocide at the hands of the Turksâ and âTurks being racist against white people.â
The Ottomans mightâve subjugated a lot of people, but these postsâ repeated insinuations against the Turks sound an awful lot like the racist âbarbarian Turkâ stereotype thatâs keeping Turks out of Europe today.Â
*whistles, sips tea*
This just in, calling the Ottoman Empire (and therefore Turkey) out on their very real crimes against humanity is now racism.
The Turks did subjugate / genocide the Greeks, the Armenians, the Bulgarians, a large part of the Balkan⌠etc. Calling them out on those things is not racism anymore than calling France (my country) out on imperialism is. Equality is also about accountability and they must be held responsible the same everyone else is.Â
People like you are part of the reason why countries like Turkey (or Japan for example) can still continue to pretend they never did anything wrong. Stop acting like calling out crimes is wrong as long as the people who committed them and those who were the victims are inconvenient to you, itâs not.
PLEASE show me receipts where the Ottomans committed a coordinated campaign to erase the existence of Greeks, Bulgarians, or Balkan people. âSubjugate/genocideâ you wrote, as if those two things are super close in meaning. I literally said they subjugated the shit out of those people, but thatâs not enough I guess?Â
If hearing me criticize PoC some more will make you happy, Iâll do it: The Ottomans were SUPER TERRIBLY BRUTAL to the peoples they conquered. But they did not attempt - and could never have managed - to eliminate those peopleâs existence, which is, hey, the definition of âgenocide.â In fact they liked having minorities in their empire because they provided great sources of taxes, military conscripts and young boys to turn into janissaries. You seem to have latched onto the Ottomans as a perfect example of PoCsâ racism against white people, but it doesnât quiiiite work because the Ottomans for the most part didnât care what ethnicity or religion someone was, as long as that person could work for them.
Their treatment of the peoples they conquered is still a dark blot on the pages of history, but equating it with genocide is disingenuous at best. Even more gross is accusing the Turks of committing genocide against the Greeks, when in actuality the ethnic cleansing of the beautiful, centuries-old Greek communities of Anatolia was carried out in agreement with the Greek government in exchange for the reciprocal ethnic cleansing of Muslims from Greek lands. And this only after the mainland Greeks attempted an invasion of Ottoman territory so outrageously violent against civilians that it basically shocked Turkish nationalism into existence. And even then, the Turks allowed the Greek community of Istanbul to remain, where it survives (although decreased by periodic pogroms) to this day. Some genocide.
Finally, letâs not forget the human cost paid by Muslims left behind when the Ottomans lost territory. The Bulgarians, Greeks, Macedonians and Serbs killed or expelled hundreds of thousands of Muslims - Turkish or not - in their attempts to destroy all trace of Ottoman culture and build ethnically âpureâ states. Turks are far from the only ones who refuse to admit the atrocities of their ancestors (and Iâm side-eyeing the only two examples you gave being Turkey and Japan). I have never heard of a European country apologizing to the descendants of those Muslim refugees, and honestly I suspect theyâd rather die than do so, because âthey had to do it to save the motherlandâ and ânational unityâ and other nationalist wargl blargl. Do those crimes not count because the Ottomans conquered those people first?Â
As for the Armenians⌠the Turks are actually super guilty of attempting to erase the Armenians and their history from Anatolia, something that theyâre still more or less doing to the Kurds nowadays. Itâs a fucking tragedy. These are absolutely racist crimes, and the Turkish people should absolutely take responsibility for them, but with the currently jingoistic political climate here⌠well, Iâm not optimistic.
Anyway. I agree with you that pretty much every group has atrocities to answer for in their history, and we should call them all out - white and PoC - equally. But you also have to admit that these days the power balance between white European countries and Turkey has done a 180 since the days of the Ottomans, and nowadays itâs the Turks who have to deal with a lot of racism from Europeans. So yeah, I took issue with your singling out of Ottoman crimes hundreds of years ago as an example to back up your argument, when the current situation affecting actual living people is the opposite.
Except itâs not âhundreds of years agoâ. Slavery in the Ottoman empire was made illegal in phases between 1830 and 1871. Thatâs actually a bit later than in the US and Western-Europe and all but a handful of its colonies & protectorates. (X) And in reality the trade in slaves in the Ottoman Empire lasted till the early 19-hundreds.
The Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian genocides all happened between 1914 and 1925, less then one century ago.Â
And @naliya didnât single out the Turks. Hereâs a list of examples she named during the discussion: Â
the Polish being denied the right to exist many times,
the Greekâs genocide at the hands of the Turks,
the Albanian massacres,
the oppression of the Irish by the British,
the prejudices against Slavic people,
the many invasion of Finland by Russia,
the possibility of non white people being racist against white people - looking at Turkey again
the North of Europe having disdain for the south,
the Slavs, Balkan countries and more widely the East being regarded as inferior,
ethnic European Muslim groups such as the Albanian, Kosovar or Chechen facing discrimination
the second Chechen war
the Nazis sending Slavs to death camps
the struggles of non Han Chinese people in China
the conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda
the crimes of Imperial Japan
the Arab slave trade
the Ottoman empire, its subjugation and genocide of a large portion of the Balkans.
I understand why, if youâre from Istanbul yourself, the examples of the Turks would catch your eye first, but given the length and scope of this list itâs hard to maintain @naliya has some special fascination for them.Â
PLEASE show me receipts where the Ottomans committed a coordinated campaign to erase the existence of Greeks, Bulgarians, or Balkan people. âSubjugate/genocideâ you wrote, as if those two things are super close in meaning.
Thatâs not what it means. The / means and, or or combined with. It doesnât signify a resemblance in the denotation of the words between which itâs placed. The named peoples experienced subjugation, genocide, or both.
You must realize calling for receipts of planning the Greek genocide is ridiculous. I know of a telegram from the Minister of the Interior ordering an official in Smyrna to force Greeks out of their homes âthrough excesses of all sortsâ if need be, and make it appear as if they leave by their own choice to avoid political complications, but thatâs about it. No wonder, the Turkish governments still rejects claims that Turkey committed any genocide at all, and wonât facilitate research on it. (E.g., remember  Hrant Dink)  Besides, even if they have decided to keep such records laying around, I donât have access to their archives and donât read Turkish.
However, even without documents, itâs possible to show  intend. For example, there are eyewitness accounts, here is a small collection, and here a partly overlapping one (tw: dead bodies for the latter one).  The quotes by Turkish, German and Austro-Hungarian  officials are especially relevant. Besides that, you can show a systematic pattern of coordinated acts, and it seems to me there is. Assyrians, Greeks and Armenians were massacred, deported, marched into the desert, deprived of food and water, subjected to forced labour, robbed and raped by the thousands all over Turkey, and their villages burned. A 150.000 to 300.000 Assyrians, 450.000 to 900.000 Greeks and 1,5 million Armenians were killed, most of the rest expelled.
How likely do you think it is that this happened by coincidence? Especially since, in many cases, the Turkish military was involved?
I literally said they subjugated the shit out of those people, but thatâs not enough I guess?Â
No, you did not. You said: âThe Ottomans mightâve subjugated a lot of people,âŚâ  That sounds as if itâs still under debate, like itâs something that might or might not have happened. It certainly doesnât express how harsh the subjugation was, like âsubjugate the shit outâ does.
If hearing me criticize PoC some more will make you happy, Iâll do it: The Ottomans were SUPER TERRIBLY BRUTAL to the peoples they conquered. But they did not attempt - and could never have managed - to eliminate those peopleâs existence, which is, hey, the definition of âgenocide.â
No, it is not. This is the international definition of genocide. Youâll see that attempting to eliminate a people completely isnât a requirement to fulfill it, let alone the capability to carry it out.  Intention to destroy a part of  a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, in combination with certain acts, is enough. To quote said source:
â The phrase âin whole or in partâ is important. Perpetrators need not intend to destroy the entire group. Destruction of only part of a group (such as its educated members, or members living in one region) is also genocide. Most authorities require intent to destroy a substantial number of group members â mass murder. But an individual criminal may be guilty of genocide even if he kills only one person, so long as he knew he was participating in a larger plan to destroy the group. â
The International Organisation of Genocide Scholars, who make it their job to study this sort of thing, Â has issued a resolution stating that the Ottoman campaign against Christian minorities of the Empire between 1914 and 1923 constituted a genocide against Armenians, Assyrians, and Pontian and Anatolian Greeks.
In fact they liked having minorities in their empire because they provided great sources of taxes, military conscripts and young boys to turn into janissaries.
That is⌠I donât even know how to put it⌠sadly ironic? Forcibly transferring children of the targeted group to another group is one of the acts explicitly stated as potentially genocidal.
Besides that, the Ottoman Empire lasted from 1299 till 1922. Even if at some point in time, the Ottomans were super happy to have all of those different ethnicities and cultures in their empire, in the beginning of the 20th century that feeling was definitely over. By that time nationalist had come into power who wanted to build a purely Turkish nation state. Â
And it again proves you didnât get the point of the discussion before you posted your first reply. The idea was to argue that whites have not always been in a position of power, and can have racism targeted against them. Bringing up practices of extortion and enslavement as a sort of⌠soothing counterargument?..  is truely baffling.
You seem to have latched onto the Ottomans as a perfect example of PoCsâ racism against white people, but it doesnât quiiiite work because the Ottomans for the most part didnât care what ethnicity or religion someone was, as long as that person could work for them.
I very much doubt that is entirely true. It is true the Ottomans enslaved Europeans, Africans as well as Central-Asians, but that doesnât rule out that they thought themselves superior to other ethnicities. E.g. Ali Suavi (1838â1878), intellectual and member of the Young Ottomans, stated that âTurks are superior to other races in political, military and cultural aspects, and the Turkish language surpasses the European languages in its richness and excellence. And where thereâs one scholar spewing such crap, there usually are more.Â
Religion, perhaps, was more important. Enslaving a freeborn Muslim was illegal (though conversion to Islam didnât automatically make you free). The dhimmy system was in place in the Empire, making Christians and Jews second-class citizens at best. Â DevĹirme (Yearly abduction of pre-adolescent boys as some form of tax) was practiced among the Christian populace the Balkans and Anatolia, not among the Turks themselves.Â
Besides that, the distinction between religion and ethnicity wasnât always clearly made. In the Turkish-Greek population exchange, âGreekâ was taken to mean âof Greek orthodox religionâ, while âTurkishâ was equated with âMuslimâ. What language people spoke or how else they identified themselves didnât matter.Â
And this only after the mainland Greeks attempted an invasion of Ottoman territory so outrageously violent against civilians that it basically shocked Turkish nationalism into existence.Â
The Greek genocide started in 1914 and lasted till 1923.
The Greek invasion of Ottoman territory started on 15 May 1919.Â
The Turkish-Greek population exchange agreement is from January 1923, and it was to take effect on the 1st of May 1923, but  by that time most of the Greeks living in the Ottoman Empire had already fled.Â
The Greek genocide being a reaction to the invasion and done according to the agreement makes no chronological sense. The most I can make of it is that the Greco-Turkish war likely made an already horrendous situation even worse. Â
But besides that- The Greek government expelling a 500,000 poor Turkish sods from their homes doesnât make the Ottoman government killing and expelling Greeks any less reprehensible. It just makes the Greek government assholes too. Anyone can point out how theyâre only reacting to something the other guys did to them first until they end up with Agamenmon as the party responsible for every war ever fought in the region, but retaliating against individuals who arenât the ones who harmed you still is not okay.Â
And even then, the Turks allowed the Greek community of Istanbul to remain, where it survives (although decreased by periodic pogroms) to this day. Some genocide.
The numbers of Greek-Orthodox in the whole of Turkey went from 1.792.206 in 1914, to 119.822 persons in 1927, to about 7,000 in 1978 (X). But donât lose your shit, folks, thereâs one city in the land where theyâre still allowed to exist. Just the occasional pogrom, no big deal. And look how well theyâre doing:
As I said, retaliating against innocent people is in no way okay, ever. Obviously, that goes for Balkan Muslims too. If anyone tries to trivialize or excuse what was done to them, you would be right to call them out.
However, that was not the case here. Though not specifically referring to this specific period, @naliya  named the Albanians, Kosovars and Chechens as victims of racism several times, so she seems quite aware of the (long-term) negative impact of the withdrawal of the Ottoman Empire on Muslims in the Balkan.
More to the point, the discussion wasnât about taking a complete inventory of all past atrocities in Europe. It was about how racism in Europe isnât a simple one-way street running from âwhite peopleâ towards âpeople of colorâ, and how not all white people at all times and places have been in a position of power. Â Bringing up instances that do not help building that argument is kind of pointless in this context.

Agreeing with you that atrocities should be called out, no matter what groep commited them. But you canât possibly cover all atrocities in every post, so youâll have to pick your examples to match your subject. The subject here wasât the Ottomans or the Balkans, but the idea of racism/ethnicity in Europe.
As I see it, there were 2 reasons the Ottomans/Turks were brought up :
First, to provide an example for the point that âinsisting that white people always held power and were never oppressed erases a huge part of European history, erases the sufferings of many people/countriesâ. So yes, @naliya is speaking about history, and explicitly acknowledges that.
Second, as an example to illustrate that non white people can be racist against white ones. No-one in this discussion is denying Turks can be and are discriminated against in Europe, but the point was that the other way around exists too. Which point still stands. Thereâs an entire Wikipedia article on racism in Turkey, full of examples. The most extreme example I can think of is the Grey Wolves, but I have witnessed other, more mundane examples, like the often met âAll western/Dutch/white/etc women are whoresâ; or the parents of the broom in a mixed marriage expressing extreme disappointment at his choice of wife because they felt he was marrying beneath him.
(As a side note, I didnât think âWe should have thought all you guys to speak Turkish when you were still our slaves. If we did, I probably wouldnât have to learn English now. â from my Turkish to My Pakistani co-worker was very funny either.)
By the way, to say there has been a 180 degree turn in power balance since the Ottoman empire is a gross exaggeration. The Ottoman Empire was severely weakened in the 19th century, but Turkey today is not a powerless, let alone a conquered nation. Every source I check for it places Turkey in the top 20 of the world in economic power (X, X), and in the top ten in military power  (X, X). Itâs GPB per capita (X) may be lagging behind at a 61th place, but thatâs still better than some eastern European and Balkan counties. Plus, the unemployment rate, especially youth unemployment, is a good bit lower than in the EU (X, X).
