Decided to draw an fanart for Mark to show some appreciation for all the hours he spends giving us amazing content to see. (Remaining mods will follow dw)
A cat is a machine that turns proteins into violence.
#Helios was declawed by his former owners so he doesn't just slap things he dislikes like most cats#he really only feels confident in hissing at them#Especially because a lot of the thing he doesn't like are bugs and those are sharp sometimes :(#Selene has figured this out and now when she hears him hiss she sprints over the kill the fuck out of the bug#Helios has learned she will do this so he'll hiss at stuff louder and louder until she hears him#A nervous old man and his emotional support homicidal maniac tags by @gallusrostromegalus
I couldn't reblog without the tags because the context is hilarious

Yes, he is more than twice her size. Yes, he is five times her age. Yes, he cries like a big baby until she kills Unacceptable Scary Things (earwigs) for him.
was just watching the vod of pyros stream 4 of the flight smp and got to the part where he talks about the cultural significance of flames and the hearth in Tegrith.
Every family has a flame, one person has the responsibility of keeping the flame going, by keeping the flame burning they keep their ancestors memories alive.
What got me thinking was Pyros comment that the flames could be split and merged. So hear me out... Tegrith marrige rituals involves both families bringing a torch that has been lit in the family flame and the couple brings the torches together to start their own hearth.
other superheros get training from their mentors, from the super secret society, from alien tech, from the monks or they have some kind of military background.
phantom, on the other hand, got training from the firefighters in his town after he crashed on their cases one too many times and they decided that "yup, if your gonna try to help, might aswell give you some training so you could be useful.", he got training from the paramedics because they were worried he wouldn't know how to help an injured human, he got training from his local town detective who smokes too much and gives him cookies when he can help with his Ghost senses and figure out if this was a human crime or a ghost crime.
honestly love this concept
our boy is doing his best for his town, he doesn't really know what he's doing but he's got the spirit and people notice that and not knowing is something they can fix
Can somebody explain to me WHY is it, whenever I follow a recipe exactly with all the right ingredients, the dish turns out meh, but whenever I'm just throwing random shit from the fridge and into the pot, I produce the most delicious meal ever with zero fucking chance to replicate it because half the time I have zero idea what I even put in there????

I respect an "I can fix him" villainfucker 50x more than a "he didn't do anything wrong, he's just misunderstood!" villainfucker. like yeah they both get the cute domestic happily ever after, but man the first guy has depth they have nuance and most importantly they are actually aware they're a villainfucker
but the guy i respect MOST is the unapologetic villainfucker. "yeah he did that shit and it was sexy" fuckers. "was the wanton murder fun babe it looked fun" fuckers. these guys know where it's at
It’s interesting how diseases rip through schools at incredible speeds despite being in an arguably modern, clean(ish) environment. I wonder if it has something to do with the whole “you need a doctor’s note to excuse your absence of even one day” combined with the average price of going to a doctor, the lack of education on things like “you’re still contagious even after the fever goes away”, and the overwhelming message of “if you don’t struggle through it, you’re a failure!”
On my campus there tends to be a problem where even I you have the doctors note professors will still take points off of your final grade regardless of how sick you are. I’ve seen people show up to class with the stomach flu, pneumonia, respiratory infections and all sorts of other contagious ailments.
Here’s a fun story:
The school system I grew up in put an absolutely ungodly amount of pressure on kids to Show Up Every Day No Matter What. Many schools are like this, but looking back, my town’s was borderline fucking dystopian. They asked me why I didn’t just “postpone” a surgery at one point— when I was fifteen— to give you an idea of how monumentally obtuse these people were.
So, in elementary school, I started having chicken pox symptoms, right? They were mild because I was vaccinated (yay!) but my mom recognized them quickly and took me to the doctor, because my mom is a reasonable human being with standards. The doctor said “yup, you’ve got those pox, it may seem mild but please for the love of god DO NOT take her to school, she is very contagious even though she may FEEL okay.”
So I had to stay home from school until I got clearance from my doctor to go back. I was an angry little gremlin the whole time, because I wanted to go to the school library and read books about the human skull, but my mother said, “no, you cannot leave this house, and do not scratch the bumps please.” So I sat at home and tried not to scratch the bumps, like a good little gremlin.
A few days into my Chicken Pox Related House Arrest, we got a letter from the school. I was far from the only person with chicken pox, as it so happened. Like… a tenth of my second grade class had Confirmed Pox. We all fell ill within DAYS of each other.
So how did this happen, you ask? Well, a kid had chicken pox, and he came to school anyway. “Ah, well perhaps they didn’t know,” you may very well say. “Maybe his parents didn’t notice!” No. No, they noticed. In fact they KNEW it was CHICKEN POX. They sent him to school anyway.
The kid’s parents…….. were, in fact, teachers at the school. And they KNOWINGLY made him go to school sick, because they didn’t want to risk hurting his precious “perfect attendance” record. They figured that since he wasn’t, like, Literally Dying, it was better for him not to miss school. Never mind the fact that they were actively endangering hundreds of little kids.
Fast forward to my freshman year of college. A kid came to class with mumps because he ‘couldn’t afford to miss’. Guess what happened? Mumps outbreak! Diseases are, as it turns out, good at being diseases! Vaccinations are phenomenal, but they can only do so much, and some people rely on herd immunity to not be killed by preventable illness.
This entire attitude needs to die. It’s dangerous. Food service workers are forced to show up sick, little kids are forced to show up sick, college students show up sick because they’re afraid of flunking out.
And on top of it all, misinformation campaigns are encouraging people not to get vaccinations! It’s 2019 and we’re flirting with the plague! Next thing you know some blogger is gonna be like “actually we should all be fucking rats and eating our meat raw, death to all science and god bless america”
Many kids at my school will show up really sick because we only get like three days of excused absences without a doctor’s note.
this is what those in literary academia call “foreshadowing”
(note the dates)
this post aged like an ice cube in an oven
worst part is! IT’S STILL HAPPENING! SCHOOLS AND WORKPLACES ARE STILL LIKE THIS!!! THEY LEARNED NOTHING!!!!!!!
Literally looking like the kind of note you find in a post apocalyptic horror game jesus
fucks me up that by total coincidence the sun and moon's size difference is exactly matched to their difference in distance from us, thus making our beautiful total solar eclipses where you can see the silver threads of the sun's corona possible because the moon just covers the sun completely
The stars (literally) aligned just right for this experience to be possible. It's likely that aliens don't have this
The moon is also absolutely gargantuan by moon standards. It isn't the largest moon in the solar system, but it is BY FAR the largest in comparison with its planet. Ganymede is the largest satellite of Jupiter and the largest moon in the solar system. Its diameter is only about 3.8% of Jupiter's. Titan's radius is 4.4% of Saturn's. Callisto and Io are the next largest in the neighborhood, with 3.4% and 2.6% the diameter of Jupiter respectively.
Our moon is number 5. It is smaller in direct comparison to the above moons. The diameter of the moon is 3475 km. That is a full 27% of the diameter of the Earth. More than a quarter. That's ridiculous. It's unheard of. The universe is large enough that the word unique probably doesn't mean a lot, but this might be about as close as you get.
This has had a huge impact on our planet. Other things aliens might not have are significant tides. One of Mars's dumpy little potatoes wouldn't be able to move oceans the way our moon does.
Our moon has also stabilized our axis to a massive degree. Without her up there our axis would wobble all over the place and our climate would be far more chaotic. Aliens might not be quite so lucky.
I guess what I am really trying to say is that the moon is extremely cool. I like the moon.
Just want to add that the reason we have such a large moon is because a whole planet crashed into proto-Earth. Theia (the planet) and Earth got so superheated by this collision that their component cores fused and the impact jettisoned a lot of material into space. That massive amount of jettisoned material became our moon. So Earth and the moon have very similar composition. This does not seem to be a common method of lunar formation.
what if the answer to the fermi paradox is that life cant exist without a moon like luna
I got a serious beef with the Fermi paradox. There is no Fermi paradox. There stopped being a Fermi paradox once the first radio telescopes went up, and we began to get a true sense of the sheer scale of the universe.
Space is big, empty, and loud. Sunspots can cause enough interference to affect global communications. We’re not even loud enough to talk over our own sun. On our own planet. We can barely communicate with Voyager, and we know exactly where it is and what its signal sounds like.
The Fermi paradox is like doubting the existence of Belfast, because you stood on a windy New York beach shouting towards it and didn’t get an answer.
i didn't realise we were drowned out by our own sun :(
She is screaming so loud
How to grow your vessel
I am shocked at how many people don't have an actively hostile relationship with advertising
I am skipping your ads as fast as I can. I'm skipping past your sponsor read. I'm muting the tv. I'm muting the tab. If they get too annoying I will simply stop trying to watch.
If advertisers can use every manipulative trick in the book to get me to buy their product, I am fully within my rights to do everything I can on my end to make their job impossible

mods add one neutron to every atom in her body
#not to be a science nerd but i kinda wonder what would happen here#like presumably radioactive decay but what exactly would go down? would it kill you? fast or slow? much to think about
This would kill you in multiple ways.
If all your atoms gained one neutron, all the hydrogen in your body would become deuterium, so all the water in your body would become heavy water, which is very bad. In most cases, adding a neutron to an atom doesn't change its chemistry, but hydrogen is special because it's so light: chemical reactions involving deuterium and heavy water happen at different rates than those with regular hydrogen, and in living cells this messes with various enzymes, especially ones involving cell mitosis. Heavy water is fine to drink in small quantities, but once about 40% of your water is heavy water it becomes cytotoxic. 100% of your water being heavy water would certainly be fatal.
Let's go through the other atoms in your body and see what happens when we add a neutron:
Carbon: All your C-12 becomes C-13, but that's still stable. Your dead body would be incredibly confusing to future archaeologists trying to do radiocarbon dating though.
Nitrogen: N-14 becomes N-15, which is also stable. No problem.
Oxygen: O-15 becomes O-16. Still stable, not a problem.
Phosphorous: very bad. Your P-31 becomes P-32, which is a beta emitter with a short half-life of 2 weeks. Humans are about 1% phosphorus by mass, so you'd have something like 0.5-1.0 kilograms of a very hot isotope in you. Worse, since a lot of the phosphorous in your body literally makes up your DNA, the radioactivity would be right in the worst possible place. This would definitely be fatal.
Calcium: Ca-40 becomes Ca-41, which is radioactive, but has a half-life of 100,000 years. Not a big deal.
Sulfur: S-32 becomes S-33. Stable.
Sodium: also bad. Na-23 would become Na-24, which decays with both electron and gamma emission. I think the lower proportion of sodium in the body means the phosphorous is the bigger issue though.
Potassium: K-39 becomes K-40, which is another weakly radioactive one probably not worth worrying about.
My guess is that the phosphorous-induced radiation damage would kill you long before the heavy water cytotoxicity did. Since it's right in your DNA, you'd probably stop synthesizing proteins almost immediately and have an unpleasant death similar to amanita mushroom poisoning (which inhibits RNA polymerase), which typically takes less than a day.
