Why is it so hard to get my hands on kids books in Mandarin and Korean?

I asked at one of the local Asian bookstores in Dallas and the lady just directed me to a section that was universally aimed at math or learning English.

I look online and get more of the same if I get anything at all.  sigh.  :-/

Look, my reading level is like 2nd or 3rd grader in Korean and kindergarten for Mandarin.  I need KIDS books.  And not math.  ew.

Hey btw, if you’re doing worldbuilding on something, and you’re scared of writing ~unrealistic~ things into it out of fear that it’ll sound lazy and ripped-out-of-your-ass, but you also don’t want to do all the back-breaking research on coming up with depressingly boring, but practical and ~realistic~ solutions, have a rule:

Just give the thing two layers of explanation. One to explain the specific problem, and another one explaining the explanation. Have an example:

Plot hole 1: If the vampires can’t stand daylight, why couldn’t they just move around underground?

Solution 1: They can’t go underground, the sewer system of the city is full of giant alligators who would eat them.

Well, that’s a very quick and simple explanation, which sure opens up additional questions.

Plot hole 2: How and why the fuck are there alligators in the sewers? How do they survive, what do they eat down there when there’s no vampires?

Solution 2: The nuns of the Underground Monastery feed and take care of them as a part of their sacred duties.

It takes exactly two layers to create an illusion that every question has an answer - that it’s just turtles all the way down. And if you’re lucky, you might even find that the second question’s answer loops right back into the first one, filling up the plot hole entirely:

Plot hole 3: Who the fuck are the sewer nuns and what’s their point and purpose?

Solution 3: The sewer nuns live underground in order to feed the alligators, in order to make sure that the vampires don’t try to move around via the sewer system.

When you’re just making things up, you don’t need to have an answer for everything - just two layers is enough to create the illusion of infinite depth. Answer the question that looms behind the answer of the first question, and a normal reader won’t bother to dig around for a 3rd question.

My favorite thing about early Internet forum culture was the default understanding that people live in different time zones and work off shifts or what have you and that some or most of the people engaged in an ongoing conversation were probably AFK while you’re online. You got mercilessly mocked for making a stink about someone not replying fast enough.

Read receipts are literally of the devil. If you send me a message and it takes me a few hours or days to reply to it, I’m probably asleep (from 8-9 am to 5 pm US Eastern) or spending time with my family or experiencing symptoms of mental illness or otherwise doing hot girl shit, and if I don’t reply fast enough for your tastes then sweetie that’s a you problem.

Random Fandom Factoids about Me

I was going through my old LJ looking for anything I wanted to save in case LJ completely dies and I came across this old gem!  Originally posted in 2010-

Factoid #1: In any fandom, I always have one pairing that I adore above all others. I will read/write this pairing almost exclusively except for requests or love triangles or unrequited love that does not break it up. This pairing will pop up in pretty much everything I write for the fandom regardless of my intention when I start writing each new thing.

Factiod #2: Outside of that pairing, it's not entirely uncommon for there to be a third individual/character that I rather enjoy tossing in with the otp to make a nice ot3.

Factoid #3: In any fandom, there will be one pairing that I loathe above all other possibilities. Usually this means that I just can't bend my mind around the very idea for one reason or another so I just bypass it, but in some cases it's a much more blatant kind of reaction. -_- I've been known to actually, physically growl at my computer just for seeing the pairing name 'jaemin' scroll across my screen. Luckily, few of these pairings manage to inspire that level of ick. (2022 Update: this reaction hit an all time low with Clint/Coulson.  There was hardware damage. >_>)

Factoid #4: In any fandom, there will always be at least one, usually more, individual/character that I can not wrap my head around them being anything other than 100% straight. There will also usually be at least one character that I absolutely cannot wrap my head around them being anything other than 100% gay or lesbian.  That won't keep me from trying to bend them or straighten them out occasionally, but... only very occasionally and almost unfailing only for a request.  

Factoid #5: In any fandom, there will always be at least one individual/character that I can easily mix and match with pretty much anyone else in the fandom. Conversely, there will be at least one that I can only wrap my brain around them possibly being with one other individual/character. (Amusingly enough, these two are almost always my OTP)

Factoid #6: While I can change my opinion on my OTP from a mainstream pairing to a 'crack' pairing, I almost never go the other direction. (I started my time in the DBSK fandom as a JaeHo fan and ended it as a MinHo fan) (it’s hilarious looking back how incredibly rare MinHo fic was to find when I first started shipping them and how juggernaut of a pairing they became.  Well.  Until you realize that at least some of that is due to the rest of the band breaking off entirely and MinHo being what was left. :-/ )

hi friend, same!! why and how could you hate on this goofy, corny string bean of a man, this magical karate nerd, this angel dad who finds joy in fistbumps and making his family food and helping kids to find balance, and tricking johnny into eating a vegetable!!! I’m a relative newbie to this fandom (was into TKK as a kid, but only finally started watching CK in jan of this year) and when I came across my first anti-daniel sentiment (on reddit, fuck you reddit!!) it genuinely startled me, because I assumed (perhaps naively) that p much everyone would love johnny AND him like I did. bc like, he’s so soft? such a smol marshmallow. he’s got this huge dumb squishy heart! I mean even if you’re ignoring TKK, literally from the first moment we see him (not in an ad) in CK he’s giving, giving, giving. hugging a bedraggled (probably a little squiffy) dude who beat him up in high school, telling him he’s still pretty, giving him plants and free car shit. is he tightly wound? sure. does his brain stop working properly when he’s mad or worried? 100%! but who among us, am I right? WHO AMONGST US. honestly, when he cracks and loses his shit that just makes me like him more bc that there’s the relatable content. not to be dramatic or whatever but I think whoever started the ‘daniel was the real bully’ joke has a lot to answer for - not only for the not insignificant amount of people that don’t take it as a joke, but for the way that attitude seems to have absorbed into the CK canon a little. Like the way ‘it was an illegal kick’ seems to have become shorthand for well, two sides to every story uhhhhh it was basically equal. Mmm, was it tho? Was it????? Is getting beaten unconscious and your leg broken like… just one of those things??? Like I get that CK is ultimately johnny’s story, the way that TKK was daniel’s, but to constantly minimise or even rewrite what happened to daniel as a way to progress johnny’s story, well it contributes to this kind of thing, ppl having a warped perception of the story and the characters. Anyway! I am rambling but yes, I don’t get it, I don’t get the antis, and I am super glad to have found a bunch of like-minded daniel-adorers here on this trash site ❤️❤️❤️

for anyone who doesn’t know, there was a policy put in place in Texas as of today forcing all doctors, teachers, etc. to report any transgender minors so that their parents can be prosecuted as child abusers. if they don’t report them they’re in jeopardy of losing their jobs. disgusting. i can’t believe this world is real.

this is a bad situation but this post is worded in a way that suggests this is has been written into law, which is currently untrue.

the attorney general stated this in an opinion, which is not a legally binding action and has not changed any laws, but is written as a suggested interpretation of the law and can still have disastrous effects for trans youth, even if it never goes further.

Good news!

Ken Paxton’s position is up for vote right now! (Early voting ends February 25, 2022; Primary starts March 1, 2022). Possibly that’s why he made this comment and why it’s referred to as ‘politically motivated’ - he’s desperate to clinch the Republican vote and is pandering directly to the bigots atm.

If you can vote in Texas, now is the time.

My grandmother is having her 90-something-th birthday next month and has decided that what she wants most is a reunion for a party.  So that’s what’s happening.

There are two major problems happening here.

1 - While I love my grandmother, I don’t love huge swaths of that side of the family.

Mammaw is a relatively open-minded “live and let live” sort of person.  She has no problem with me being divorced or queer.  She has no problem that one of my cousins married a Cuban.  She has no problem that my brother is a bisexual, Wiccan swinger.

The aunts and uncles and a huge chunk of the cousins, on the other hand, are the kind of right wing evangelical hypocrites who think Trump is the Second Coming.

I cannot stress enough how much I do not want to deal with these people for any kind of extended period of time.  I’m going to need a dentist by the end of the day if I’m going to avoid starting a fight, I’m sure.

2 - I have honestly avoided talking to my grandmother since my father died.  It was a struggle to stabilize both my own and my son’s grief and guilt.  I absolutely could not deal with anyone else’s.  I had to have my brother even break the news to everyone because notifying him was the extent of what I could handle.

Dad died in July of 2020.  Almost two years ago.  And I have avoided my grandmother that entire time.  And now I’m going to see her for the first time since surrounded by people who didn’t really even like my dad very much (in their defense, my father was an antagonistic presence in the life of almost everyone who knew him for most of ‘70-’05  and only sort of mellowed out in the last decade of his life towards anyone besides me and one of my brothers) and who all KNOW that I’ve avoided my grandmother since dad died and are going to have plenty to say about it.  

That’s going to be.  Fun.  >_>

So yeah.  March will either end in tears or blood or both.
