Suicide ideation is so weird. Making a lovely apple pie while thinking of bleeding out in the tub.
Person says “ DC canon sucks so I’ll ignore it”, proceeds to write some of the worst takes known to man, many such cases.
hey guysss so unfortunately the rumors are true and im leaving the narrative. Buttt the good news is my absence will create such a gaping hole in your lives that it will become a sort of presence itself, and so in a way it will kind of be like i never left! But i am. Leaving just to be clear.
I love the Malcolm Thawne storyline because it makes Eobard Thawne the perfect foil for Wally West.
Eobard Thawne is the great (x4) grandson of Malcolm Thawne, making him Barry Allen's great (x4) nephew, and he grows up absolutely idolising the Flash, despite heroes no longer existing. He collects memorabilia, he owns his biography, he replicated the accident that gave Barry his powers, and he went back in time to try and meet Barry. However, when he travels back in time, he accidentally ends up coming back to the time after Barry's death, where Wally is the Flash. He then finds the Flash museum, and discovers the identity of Professor Zoom, Flash's greatest enemy, a name lost to time, and it turns out to be him. He is his hero's greatest enemy, the one man the Flash killed, and this makes him lose it. He thinks he is Barry Allen, and when he eventually remembers he's not, he hates Barry for killing him, thus signaling the beginning of the Reverse Flash. His legacy started when he found out Barry killed him.
Wally West, on the other hand, is the nephew of Iris West-Allen, making him also Barry's nephew, and, like Eobard, he grows up idolising the Flash. His room is filled with flash merchandise, he wants to meet him, he is the president (and sole member) of the Blue Valley Flash fan club, and, despite his parents insistence that hopes and ambitions are for dreamers and that Wally needs to face reality, he dreams of being like the Flash. And he doesn't just become like the Flash, he actually becomes the Flash. He dedicates his life to living up to the legacy of Barry Allen, so much so he is left with a bad case of imposter syndrome. He needs to carry on for Barry, he can't let the Flash die along side him, he must continue his legacy, regardless of if he believes he lives up to it or not. He will bring up Barry any chance he gets, his biggest fear is Barry not believing in him, and the pedestal he puts Barry on slows him down at various points. He has said multiple times that his life started at age 10, his life started when he gained access to the speed force and became Kid Flash, his life started when he met Barry.
They're truly two sides of the same coin, they're both Barry's nephews who worshipped the Flash as kids, only one grew up to become his greatest enemy and his reverse, whilst the other grew up to carry the torch after his death and become everything he wanted the Flash to be. I will always love the Malcolm Thawne storyline for this
(Also I think it's fun that Barry meets one of his relatives from the future and they absolutely hate him. It's tragic and perfect. Pair that with him not getting to meet his twins and Bart just not really caring about him, his luck with his descendants is awful and I love it)
no i don't even know how they ended up here. whatever, go my doodles.
everyone start CissieBart maxxing NOW ‼️
Barry is just another me 😭
Just saw another post about how shipping BruceBabs is disgusting and practically "incest" (which it's already a dumb argument because they've never been daughter and father coded in any way, at most friendly coworkers) and so so despicable because she's his son's partner and what more
And because i've reached a point where I no longer give a fuck in this fandom, I'm going to say something:
Shipping Brubabs makes way more sense than shipping Dickbabs. And there's nothing wrong about it
Because, for one: Barbara Gordon is a grown ass woman, full adult with a developed frontal lobe and more than enough life experience on her belt to be with whoever the hell she wants to be. She and Bruce wouldn't be "pedophilic" as some dumbly claim. It would be a case of two adults with an age gap dating. As long as she consents, it's normal.
And TWO: A lot of you here don't know this because you were too young or not even born, but Barbara was originally created to be, quite literally, Bruce's ideal love interest. That's it. Batgirl debuted as a female partner to complement Batman and canonically had a crush on Bruce. Even more, she was pushed even further into this role to discredit Catwoman as Batman's love interest, because back then they casted a black woman to play her and, being the era it was, they inmediately rushed to show a white woman to pair Bruce with as the "better" one. The disposable black gf trope is as old as the sun.
Ignoring race bullshit, you can't claim to know Barbara and deny or completely ignore her origins. You may disagree with them and all, sure, as I do disagree a lot when it comes to her character, but seeing people nowadays clutch their pearls when people ship her with Bruce makes me laugh and it's so dumb, especially when they use her relationship with Dick as a reason to hate it.
Reminder❗: Barbara had to be DE AGED, aka change the age she was created with and therefore re-shaping her whole history as Batgirl, with just to be paired with Dick. DC already attempted something by having Dick have a puppy crush on her and that one scene where she forcefully kissed him to "shut him up" This scene arised so many complaints from readers about how weird it was (Barbara was ten years older than Dick and he was still a teenager) and how badly it made Barbara look, that I guess they dropped it entirely and kept her being in love with Bruce, who was much closer to her in age. Eventually, I assume as soon as someone gave them the green light for it, they realised they had to make her younger to make the pairing "attractive" for the public and still had to do multiple retcons for both her and Dick that dismantled their already established backstories in order for them to make sense as a couple. They basically changed Barbara as a character, down to her very roots, just to push for Dickbabs. They ruined Dick's lore with the Titans, his relationship with Bruce, his role in Bludhaven and his romance with Kory (which was very well developed and they complemented each other without erasing their own individual identities) for this, and in return, they also ruined Barbara and her history as Batgirl, her motives and her identity for this.
Original Barbara, the first Batgirl, the one shipped with Bruce, was a congresswoman, an adult with a long time job who knew Dick since he was a kid. She was Batman's equal. She was literally created to be. She fit with him and his lifestyle without really having to change much, because it was already written in her. And even if you didn't ship them, you could still see them as friends and partners without screwing up Barbara's character. Even now, after all the retcons she went through, you can still ship them because they're both adults and still have enough story in common to be paired together (although I agree, shipping her feels iffy when it's within the context of her having met Bruce as a teenager, Dick's age appropiate partner in crime, instead of an adult but that's another thing)
But if you ship her with Dick, just so you know, they completely changed her character to make her "appropiate" to be his girlfriend. It's CANONICALLY the reason she got de aged. She was perfectly fine as Batgirl in her original age, it didn't affect the plot to change it until someone in DC I guess wanted to project on Dick with his crush on an older woman and decided he had to make it a reality by all means necessary.
So, next time you feel disgusted when seeing Bruce x Barbara or feel the need to complain because of Dick or anything. Just so you know, they make more sense within their characters' context than Dickbabs does lol
Stay safe, drink water and read comics before making statements. Love you all ❤
I think I’ve already confessed that I’m not a big birdflash fan, but there is something I really gotta point out because it’s bothering me.
I see a lot of people use specific comic panels to try and show how close these two characters are, but completely miss the whole point of the comic itself.
For example, I’ve seen a lot of people use panels from The Flash 1987 210, in which Wally reflects on his relationship with dick.
The problem with this is they are literally cutting out the next part of the page that explains that they have drifted apart
Wally is extremely different from dick, and once he takes up the flash mantle, it becomes clear that these two characters are on different paths. Wally wants to uphold the legacy of the flash, dick desperately wants to escape the legacy of Batman. Wally has a wife, three children, and a stable job. Dicks life changes at a moments notice, one minute he’s broke, one minute he’s rich, sometimes he has a job as a police officer, sometimes he’s dating one of his many red headed girlfriends, he’s the opposite of stable.
And that’s not to say the different characters can’t be friends or be together, but as this same comic shows, these two often struggle to understand one another once adults
Wally, after zoom caused his wife Linda to have a miscarriage, went to Hal as the spectre for help, which no one liked, including Dick. He is somewhat miffed Wally didn’t come to him, be he also sides with Bruce about how reckless and stupid the action was
He definitely empathizes with Wally’s situation, but he’s not really there to give support. Later on, dick does start to get the point, and the two take down gorilla grod. Dick apologies for his actions and both agree to stay in touch more. Obviously every good friendship is going to have some moments of tension and disagreement, but I think this really shows why Wally and Dick fell apart as adults.
And this really is the crux of why I’m personally not a big fan or birdflash. These two characters are inherently different and it’s so rare for me to see any birdflash content that acknowledges this. They can be together in a way that acknowledges and builds off of this, but it really hasn’t been done.
More importantly, I’ve noticed that to make burdflash work, a lot of fans completely erase Wally’s character to ignore these differences. His own goals, his own backstory, his own relationships, are just gone so he can be with dick. There is never any acknowledgment of the canon of Wally’s own motivations, such as living up to the flash mantle, or any mention of his connections to characters outside of Dick.
Even more so, I think erasing the presence of his wife and kids from his life so he can be with dick is really hard on the character. Linda is so essential in Wally’s life. She is the character in which speedsters learn the importance of having a lightning rod. She is the one to often push Wally to keep going. His kids redefined his life. He literally broke the source wall in order to keep them in his life. These are essential relationships that are just erased from Wally’s life.
As someone who truly prefers Wally over Dick, it hurts to see a potentially good pairing erase the good aspects of Wally like this. There is plenty of erasure done to other dc characters because of how popular the Bats are, and this ship, at least to me, is one of the worst examples. These characters are different, and often times it makes it hard for them to understand each other. Ignoring that issue doesn’t make the ship good in my eyes.
Anyways, I really don’t want to poop on birdflash as a whole. It is by no means a bad ship, I personally just don’t really like it. It has a lot of qualities that bother me. Despite all of this though, I do love seeing people’s art of it and I actually do think it can work a bit better when they are young and apart of the teen titans. I also know as a halbarry shipper I’m throwing rocks in a glass house lmao. But please ship what you like, I really don’t care, I just needed to shout into the void about my feelings around it :)
Adding onto this, a lot birdflash work tends to have Wally move to Bludhaven, which irks me. Wally living in Keystone is very important to him, and it took a while for him to get there.
He started off in New York, where he won the lottery and lived in a very lavish house, and then a run down apartment after he eventually lost his money and ended up in debt. He moves to Keystone after Joan Garrick mentions it's a lot cheaper. Keystone is close enough to Central City to be familiar, but it's not Central so he doesn't feel like he's overshadowing Barry's memory (something he struggles with greatly). Taking him away really disrupts his life, just like it would if you took Dick out of Bludhaven.
They also tend to keep him as Kid Flash, or they'll make him Flamebird. For the latter, as a Bette Kane fan, it always evokes a visceral reaction in me, give my girl her flowers and stop stealing her mantle!! Wally being the Flash is so important to his growth, so much of his characterisation really blossoms when he is Flash. A Wally story where he doesn't become Flash as an adult is a bad Wally story in my opinion (obviously excluding elseworlds where it's a different plotline). His imposter syndrome, his grief, his new friendships, his family, it all centres around him being the Flash, and it's so important to him that he takes up the mantle after Barry.
As someone who prefers Wally to Dick, I just can't do birdflash, Wally is always an afterthought and it's so upsetting. Everything OP says hits the nail on the head, I had been trying to articulate why I didn't like the ship for ages and this is exactly it
