Love logging on to tumblr dot com and seeing posts about why libraries should be Cancelled because they don’t pull problematique books
Also let’s be real, Problematic Books are one of the strongest arguments for libraries’ continued existence?
Let’s say you need an outdated queer theory textbook that uses biphobic and cissexist rhetoric for your gender studies thesis, but you don’t particularly want to own that book.
Let’s say you need a primary source to strengthen your argument to your college as to why a certain political figure does not deserve to be a speaker at your graduation because they perpetuate hate speech.
Let’s say you and your friends want to hateread a book by your least favorite author but you don’t want to give him your money.
You deserve the ability to access that content legally without having to purchase and own it. And so does everyone else, no matter how suspicious you might be of their motives for reading a Problematic book.
When I was doing my masters in library science, they reiterated over and over: there should be something in a library to offend everyone. Believe me. There are books in my library that I find offensive. But my job is to provide access. Not to question WHY people need stuff or to judge them. Libraries should function as a neutral space. We are providing information, which in and of itself is neutral. It’s what people DO with that information that matters. And even then, it’s not my place to judge.
When I was in college, I was doing a paper for an African-American Studies class, and I found myself suddenly in need of info on exactly what sort of self-justification white people were using during the days of slavery.
And I found one in the college library. An original slave-owner’s apologia from eighteen hundred or so.
Nasty stuff. But studying the mechanics of evil is a useful pursuit. One that has relevance in today’s world, certainly.
(My African-American Studies professor thought so too; he gave me an A.)
The point being, no matter how bad a book is, there is value in preserving it—if only to demonstrate, “This, this right here, this is a bad thing.“ Mein Kampf? Worth picking through to note the psychology of a depraved leader. (Did you know that Hitler framed every damn thing as a war, including farming, which he characterized as wrestling food from an unwilling land, or some such bullshit? Might be a characteristic worth paying attention to. Be cautious about leaders who use “war” rhetoric for things that aren’t actually wars, such as … oh, to pull an example out of a hat, how about “drugs.”) Slavery apologia? Leans heavily into Biblical justification, from the one I read, so maybe, just maybe, we should examine Biblical justifications very carefully. Even the worst stuff teaches us things.
Which is part of what a library is there for.
Very Normal behavior in a Very Normal country
police have begun kidnapping protestors in kenosha
the people kidnapped are a part of riot kitchen
oops reblog this version. crew is released! here’s the gofundme for a food truck license, theyve almost reached their goal!
Just to remind you: Cops lie
This is why you should pay actual sex workers for content instead of enabling celebrities to dominate platforms that aren’t meant for them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also her sister is writing really shitty stuff about SWs in her comments
More information from a SW on Twitter, thread linked here
I really loved this moment.
there are worse places he could have picked to fight a water bender but the list isn’t very long
The second girl at least read the book to confirm that it was shit, she even had Capote on deck as backup. Chick 1 is just lazy
Nope. Girl 2 saw that Girl 1′s absolutely accurate analysis was being shut down just because it wasn’t stated in an intellectual way (in spite of its validity). So Girl 2 reinforced Girl 1′s opinions in solidarity and made sure that it was absolutely clear that Girl 1 was factually correct. WITHOUT taking credit for her observations (”kim is right” instead of “Actually, kim”)
Girls supporting Girls.
Girls not letting other girls be treated poorly.
If you read thirty pages of a book and hate it, that’s a good analysis. Girl 1 literally said, “It sucked for these reasons, and I only got through 30 pages.” She was absolutely paying attention and trying to get it. But if all you get is a headache, fuck that book.
I love this exchange
why do they always end up as blonde white women 😭

I just want to yell so many good things about Britney Spears. Look at this parenting right here; rather than just twist their arms and tell the ‘smile or no McFlurry on the drive home’ she’s checking if her little boys are comfortable with the cameras and attention and if not, no problem baby boy, you go chill. And I have no problem with her staying to get more pictures, especially not when her other adorable kid wants to. I mean, it’s her job up to a point. And we all know for a fact she probably watched the film with both the little bugs in her lap anyway.
Considering what she dealt with and went through in front of paps….god, I love her.
people can say what they want about her supposed meltdown, but frankly, that entire ‘episode’ always made perfect sense to me. she and i are of an age, and no matter how young or old i was, i always understood perfectly why she did it, and thought it was utter bullshit that a court could order what they did, instead of reprimanding the many, many people that felt so entitled to her that they drove her to extremes just to get 5 seconds of peace.
and now seeing this kind of thing? she has just gotten more awesome.
i remember reading how she got herself a tutor so she could help her kids with their homework. not got THEM a tutor, but she got herself one because she wanted to be the one helping them. that’s a+++ parenting right there ok?
This makes me so happy :’)
She got a court order because she was, by her own admission, raising her kids like her mother raised her. The judge sent her to therapy and parenting classes to work out all of the horrible stage-mother bullshit she had to live through. I mean, she thought it was normal to give her kids cough syrup and whiskey so they’d sleep, because it’s what her mother gave her to knock her out when she got rowdy.
I think Britney is a great role model for adult abused children and is living proof that you are not trapped in the cycle of abuse.
The purest 90s kid experience is being so happy for Britney Spears in her new life
Oh hey I haven’t yelled about voting in a while
Reposting this because some of y’all need a reminding.
Another reminder:
VOTE YOUR WHOLE BALLOT.
A Democratic President does nothing if Congress is controlled by Republicans. Your local elections are important, too. (It took us 20 years, but you notice we don’t have issues with our sheriff out here in Phoenix now we’ve voted out Joe Arpaio.)
Don’t skip any. Look up names on your phone while you’re in the ballot booth if you have to. VOTE YOUR WHOLE BALLOT.
A PSA because a lot of people don’t know this: You CAN take your phone into the ballot booth, no one will stop you. You CAN google names from inside the ballot booth, no one will stop you. The only time you can get in trouble is, in some states, if you take a photo of your ballot. You CAN also take a long time voting. There are lots of booths usually, don’t worry about the line if you need to think about anything. Voting is not a high school exam. You’re allowed to bring your phone. Please do that in case there’s something on the ballot you don’t understand!
You can also register to vote by mail! That means you can use google and take all the time you need to fill out your ballot! I don’t know how it works in other states but California specifically has made voting by mail extremely easy and hassle free and most people I know vote by mail.
VOTE GUYS PLEASE GOD
Somebody plz translate this
Thigh high socks and femboy stuff used to be heavily associated with trans people, but due to its "anime" aesthetic and popularity on YouTube internet fascists have latched unto it. The same is starting to happen now with cottage core which originates in a desire to push back away from alienation born of capitalism by like living in a house with your close ones where you grow your own stuff, away from the city. Fascists are using the same aesthetic to promote traditionalist values, in a way that's like, they attract unsuspecting people by using the aesthetic, dilutes in their nauseating ideologies in a discrete way and progressively radicalise people. Same for ecofascism, they use the general climate of fear and anger at governments' inaction regarding climate change to propagate their ideas on eugenics among other things.
Basically they know how to identify codes and trends that resonate among the younger internet users on the most popular social networks, repeat them while adding in their ideologies and thus slowly recruit more people.
