Hi, I’m Kit! I love to yap about my fandoms. That’s what this blog is for!

Note that recently I’ve become more critical in how I analyze media and fandom, that might not be for you and that’s okay! But I will post positive and negative stuff. Tumblr is a good space to do so, so I’m gonna keep posting whatever I feel like x)

Also, disagreements on my opinion posts are welcome! Just be nice pls 😅

((This blog used to mainly be for TADC stuff but unfortunately I have been disappointed by both the creator of the show’s harmful behaviour and the finale of the show itself. So while I’m complaining about it a lot right now eventually I will probably move on from the show as a whole. Or maybe do some AU content. But it’s def not going to be my main schtick anymore. I don’t have anything against anyone who liked the finale or whatnot like half of my friends did lol. But I did not.))

I will ask you dnf/i if you are a pro/darkshipper, especially a vocal one. Though, I don’t dig thru people’s profiles just because they liked my posts or something. I don’t really have a dni besides that because I block a lot and I find that works better than an actual dni for tumblr tbh. But if you’re in that group and I block you, that’s why.

That aside, I block if I feel I need to, do not take it personally at all or think you did something wrong. Sometimes, it might just be that you post a lot about something I personally don't like.

I think I might just stop posting about TADC and wipe my blog of anything to do with the show positive or negative or maybe just move to a different account and keep this one inactive, I’m so, so tired. I might not just wipe everything because I’m not sure I can bring myself to lose all the thoughts I’ve written (maybe if I save them all) but at the very least I want to step back and reduce the posting/time on tumblr. If I stay on this account I might post the occasional drawing relating to the show if I somehow feel the urge to doodle something (doubtful, but maybe a form of catharsis) but it’s just gotten to a point where my heart’s less and less in it, it’s wasted enough of my time and there are so many things I care about, my friends and family, being creative, the environment, my studies in psychology and comp sci, there is time for me to learn and grow and make a positive impact and I don’t want to take up that time getting frustrated by the brainchild of a creator with weird and concerning patterns of behaviour who’s tweets and such ngl didn’t always sit super well with me even before I found out

I don’t mean this post to be like “ohhhh I’m better for not engaging with it as much” I just kinda. Need to get out of this headspace for my own sake it’s tiring haha

As someone very critical of TADC, I want to bring a certain "It's okay actually for humans to admit they've done bad things in the past and reflect on it. None of us are innocent. Fictional characters are meant to be tools we can use to explore and express the worst parts of ourselves. A human is not irredeemable for treating others badly. You can grow if you choose to." energy that I don't think other TADC criticals want to give credence to.

Okay I personally rate it around a ~4/10 but I need to watch the finale on YouTube as well to give my final verdict because it helps me get my head around something to be able to like. Watch it in full and pause it and think about it, you know.

Rating it purely as a piece of art and not to do with any external concerns surrounding the show, I don’t think it’s horrible or anything, but it’s quite poor to me. It focuses on the wrong things during its runtime and feels very rushed and narratively unsatisfying. Also, this is more controversial, but as a (mostly former) Jax liker, not only do I dislike how much time was spent on Jax, but A. It actively takes away from key other characters, and B. (The more controversial part) It makes Jax go from “a bad person at the moment, but could become a better person” to “This person was genuinely horrible towards people from the start, he also has thoughts and desires towards women that objectify them to a high level. So yeah him being horrible didn’t spring from his best friend abstracting, in fact, he’s the one who drove his best friend to suicide” (in Gooseworx’s words, not mine). And, the narrative simultaneously makes her (Jax) an even more awful person than she was previously. But it also tries to make her sympathetic. Look, I get it, there are sympathetic parts of her backstory, and I’m all for contradictions in a narrative, as the real world has contradictions. But this feels ridiculous, a bit. One can’t have their cake and eat it too. You know? And it doesn’t even feel like it manifests well. Like, it’s meant to be a cautionary tale, but it doesn’t land. Felt like false advertising to have episodes 1-5 be like they were and then focus allllll on Jax’s backstory in the literal FINALE. Hello???? What about Kinger’s reveal???? And why name drop Scratch if he never comes up?

Oh god I could go on. Ragatha and Pomni’s friendship springs out of nowhere. I wanted real connection between these two but instead it’s just like “we became friends offscreen yay.” And Caine’s redemption? So rushed. And the Instagram scene?????? OH MY GOD 💀

I don’t have time for like. A well worded review right now… but ohhhh mannnnnnn 😭😭😭

I did like Jax’s bow scene minus the weird shit about her pushing her mom cuz that was so fucking unnecessary. Just have her push her mom off her in a non-violent way, yell at her, and run away. It’d make more sense. But this is Jax we’re talking about so I guess she has to have a kill count. /s/hj Strange trans rep. Glad it worked for some people, I found it concerning though 😭😭😭 why make her so violent when she could be a jerk in other ways?

I liked Ribbit. Justice for Ribbit. I liked Kaufmo. I love abstragedy but um. Zooble’s dialogue was so bad. But I love Zooble so they get a pass. Justice for Zooble. And Gangle. And Ragatha. Please let me take you guys out of this show. Jax too. Give Rebecca Sugar Jax. They would do that rabbitgirl WELL… I wish she had written TADC… come back Rebecca…

I had issues with episodes 7 and 8 but I mostly overlooked them… but HOOOOOBOYYYYYY EPISODE 9. What in tarnation 🤠 so much for my 2.5 year hyperfixation (I’m saying this for comedic effect but the positive hyperfixation stopped after the racism shit, episode 9 was just the icing on this cake of doom)

Verdict: 4/10, may change, who knows if I’ll soften or harden 🤪

I changed my name from moonshadow(e) to mooneserval (not sure if I’ll keep it but that’s it for now!) because I use the former name for my art accounts and I basically only use this account to yap nowadays lol. If I make an art blog I’ll say something! But for now I prefer using Instagram to post my art… and Tumblr to talk about fandoms 👍

I noticed people have been dogging on critical tags recently and I’m just going to say:

Most of us are not D1 haters in our lives or something like many people assume lol. We just found a media that we were passionate about in a positive way. Then, we found out something negative about that media, subjectively or objectively. It can be something more minor, like being frustrated with a writing choice, or it can be deeper, like writing perpetuating harmful stereotypes/narratives/etc., and sometimes, it even bleeds into real life, when we find out the creators behind something we liked are… less than stellar people. Perhaps they even partook in bigotry or a harmful act that overshadows their work. Or at the very least is something that should be kept in mind.

And so, that passion gets translated into a different type of passion. A drive to talk about what we wish was different or what bothers us. Some of us might do both, we might talk about the bad things while also still engaging with general fandom content separately because it fulfills certain aspects that canon might not or is just fun to see.

We NEED crit spaces to talk about certain media when we feel mixed or negative on them. And we usually don’t cross tag with the main tag. We vent our frustrations in critical tags because we want a space where people understand where we are coming from, and we also don’t want to bring down people in the main tag (excluding serious issues, which do happen sometimes, but you know what I mean).

I’m more of a lover than a hater, corny but true. I don’t critique anything I despise. I critique stuff I like/d that I got disappointed by for one reason or another. Maybe I even still like it but I’m exasperated and would rather not stress about the loud minority of fans who cannot accept anything but positivity. And yeah, you’ll find the occasional crit blogger who is doing it for malicious reasons, there are people who hate to hate out there, but that’s not most of us. So please, don’t go in this tag expecting just positive opinions, and then pick a fight when you see people using the tags what they’re meant for!!!

I really like TADC but I feel like My Main problem with it and why I don't create much fan content or talk about it as much as other shows and generaly can't connect as much is cause of the fact that the show simply seems to not know how to deal with payoff and build up

With the scenes with a Big pay out, there is BARELY any build up Made (Jax literally abstracts out camera from one scene to another for crying out loud) and the ones that HAVE build up have an underwhelming pay out (both Gangle and Ragatha's arcs seem to be slowly building up on the sidelines during the first few chapters, to then culminate in just one conversation that feel way to straight foward for the subjects it's tackling).

One of the reasones why ep 3 is still My favourite even after the finale is cause is one of the only episodes Where the build up is proportioned to the pay out

Throught the Ep, Kinger seems to act weirder than normal, more....sane. He is able to keep his composure, shots a monster point blank and generaly is more coherente, not to forget the moment were Kinger calls the monster "honey" for some reasone. Then, when is revealed the whole wife thing, we finally get to hear why he is acting like this, it feels rewarding cause 1. Unlike in most cases, a simple conversation feels apropiated for this cause we have only been exploring it thru little Moments in a single episode, and not Big plot points or over arching themes, and 2. We actually get to see the scene Where Queenie is abstracted!! As ridiculous as it may sound, I feel like sooo many of this disapointing plot points could have been at least a bit more satisfying if we had ANY visual, cause that way we feel like the characters are living or doing something instead- of just being told

I genuenly feel like scenes were missing between plot points cause it felt like characters resolved stuff without me, and that just makes it hard to connect with them for me cause I feel like I havent actually met them yet

The whole show feels like a retelling from a friend that is a really Big fan, only focusing on specific plot points and important Moments and leaving out certain details or middle parts. Is cool and You understand why they like it, but You don't feel like You actually know the characters or the show or it's stakes, just it's basics. TADC to me feels like a retelling without a source material

This Juneteenth I want people to know and remember Alfred Irving who was finally freed from chattel slavery in 1942 and Mae Louis Miller who was finally freed from peonage slavery in 1963.

Slavery was not "200 years ago," the last living former enslaved african american passed away in 2014 at 70 years old.

Chattell slavery in America did not go away, it adapted. It became peonage, sharecropping, vagrancy laws, "chain gangs" or convict leasing, and continues into the modern day prison system and the systematic incarceration of black and brown people and expanded to forced detention of immigrants in modern day America.

Do not believe the common narrative that the emancipation proclamation freed every slave. There are many more who were unable to tell their stories out of shame or fear of harm.

I reccomend that people read Slavery by Another Name by Douglas A. Blackmon or watch the 90 minute documentary / film adaptation

If nothing else please remember the names of the two people that American society wants you to forget.

I think one of the things in TADC that makes me personally the most disappointed/I’m the most passionate about is how Ragatha had SO MUCH potential to be a complex, powerful character but she was constantly shafted and we never got time to explore HER emotions outside of caring for others. The closest we got was the Kinger Ragatha scene in episode 6 and even THAT focuses on how she feels about Pomni and especially Jax (and serves his backstory). This would be fine if we got more scenes with Ragatha but it makes her feel shallow compared to the potential of her character because we just don’t spend much time with her without another character being prioritized. Even her friendship with Pomni is not properly developed whatsoever.

You can see a clear sign of this in episode 5. Ragatha discusses her abusive mother, everyone stares at her in concern, and we cut to Jax looking awkward. Which again, that’s fine. But we never bring up her trauma or history again except for the brief episode 8 scene and JAX making an especially cruel dig at her in the finale.

It genuinely sucks to me. Like I don’t need her to be a main character but it feels like even Gangle and Zooble (who don’t get a ton of screentime, but it’s a more forgivable since they were set up as side characters) got more development than her despite Ragatha being set up as a key character alongside Pomni and Jax.

There was also so much potential for Ragatha to be a narrative foil to Jax and she was just IGNORED LIKE DAMNNNN some of this is personal bias because I thought she could’ve been a type of character we don’t see in media nearly enough, but there’s also a lot of issues I have with it on an objective, narrative level. You could take Ragatha out of TADC and barely anything would change—and that’s the number one thing you’re supposed to avoid when writing characters, no matter their importance!

critical tags are formed as a result of criticism being largely osctracized in general fandom pages due to the sentiment of ‘let people enjoy their fun!’ or ‘you just don’t get it, the show has a specific targeted audience/ you aren’t the targeted audience/ you aren’t smart enough for this smart show.’

I am also starting to feel fans who have complaints for critical tag users (yet are not in community w them) are also building this…dichotomy among critical tag users and non-critical tag users— like they are building this ‘us vs them’ narrative, despite the real fact many critics engage with non-critical fanworks!

They like and share fanworks from fanfics and fanarts. Many critics are also AU builders or creators of Fan Rewrites!

Alright so we're gonna talk about some real shit right now.

There is a YouTuber known as CerosTV, a Black bisexual man, who has made several videos on TADC where he has expressed his praise and admiration of the series, as well as shutting down the racism and bigotry allegations as nothing serious. I know that this part especially, has been frustrating to some, specifically the Black community when it comes to feeling like we can't have large creators on our side when we discuss racism and fandom.

This man has just been hatecrimed. After attending a Pride event with his girlfriend, he was attacked and assaulted by a group of men while returning home. Point blank. He's in recovery, but a GoFundMe has been posted as he sorts things out. The video down below explains more about what happened but trigger warning: it is pretty disturbing.

With that being said though...where the fuck are TADC fans now? Because they sure had no issue hyping this man up for praising the show and essentially being the gateway for nonblack fans to excuse the racism and bigotry that was occurring in fandom and production. It was all fine and dandy then, but now that he's been actually injured and in need of assistance...they've disappeared. Nothing about what happened here was "equivalent exchange" or any of the BS that I've seen people try to argue.

I AM however, going to bring attention to the fact that he was platformed by TADC fans for his opinions and now that they've been validated, they've completely moved on from him as a person. At the end of the day, while I can and will be critical of people that may dismiss or excuse bigotry towards their community for ANY reason, a situation like this is always the worst possible outcome I could ever be afraid of.
