I get why we talk so much about Judblanc, but I wish there were more people analysing the characters individually. I love Jud duplenticy as much as the next person, but then I remember how he stayed silent and let Wicks spew his hatred towards anyone outside of his flock, remaining silent and compliant and get that feeling that -despite everything- at his heart, he’s still just another catholic official who refuses to act in the face of wrongdoings, because fixing such things 'belongs in the hands of god'. And yes, he confronted Wicks eventually, but even then, what would’ve changed? Even if he‘d reported him (which he didn’t), probably nothing would’ve happened. We’ve seen how Langstrom talks about Wicks at the beginning of the movie, they know, but the system refuses to act. And Jud sees all of this, experiences it first hand and still openly supports the system, devoting his life to it. And I know there’s nuance there and reason and it’s one of the many reasons I think this movie is so amazing, but also as someone with religious trauma stemming partly from that culture of „being righteous through ignorance“ it hurts so bad and I want to just love Jud with all my heart, but I physically can’t. All that to say I’m so glad Blanc walked out of that church at the end. (Go to your husband and happily live the queer life you fought so hard for, Sir, you do NOT owe forgiveness to anyone but your own conscience.)
