2025 marks the silver jubilee of the celebration of mother language day.
Languages, whether spoken by hundreds of millions, or just by a few thousand native speakers, connect people and are inseparably linked with the respective culture. However, according to a UNESCO estimate, one language disappears every two weeks – an irreparable loss for our collective cultural heritage. The International Day of Mother Language is a worldwide annual observance to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The day was proclaimed by the General Conference of UNESCO in November 1999. 2025 marks the silver jubilee of the celebration of mother language day. The Division of Conference Management at the United Nations Office at Geneva joins these celebrations by highlighting the cultural wealth and language abilities of its staff and partners.

Language serves as a powerful and unifying tool to connect people irrespective of their socio-economic and cultural differences. It transcends geographical barriers and brings people together to work for the greater cause of humanity. Thus, the power of language is universal.
The theme of this year's International Mother Language Day is "Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning". Today, 40% of the world's population does not have access to education in a language they speak or understand. In some countries this figure rises to over 90%. Yet research shows that the use of learners' own language(s) in schools provides a solid foundation for learning, boosts self-esteem and critical thinking skills, and opens the door for inter-generational learning, language revitalization, and the preservation of culture and intangible heritage.
This year's celebration of International Mother Language Day is meant to highlight the importance of implementing multilingual education policies and practices as a pillar to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4.

There are about 6,500 languages in the world.
There are about 6,500 languages in the world, and around 200 languages spoken in Manchester at any one time. UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism. It has been observed globally since 2000 and has important historical roots. In Bangladesh 21 February is the anniversary of the day when Bangladeshis fought for recognition for the Bangla language.
With many events taking place across the city, we have been very excited to welcome new organisations hosting IMLD celebrations this year! A special one for us too, as we launch a brand new exhibition with participants from 10 UNESCO Cities of Literature, on the theme of Threads.

Focusing on literary translation.
HOSTED BY COMMAPRESS, MANCHESTER IN TRANSLATION WILL BE A SERIES OF FREE ONLINE WORKSHOPS AND PANELS OFFERING ADVICE AND INSIGHT INTO THE WORLD OF TRANSLATION.
Taking place over three days from 19-21 Feb 2024, the event will be an opportunity for budding translators – or those with a passion for languages – to develop practical skills for literary translation, learn about the life of the translator and discover paths to publication.
The online conference will begin with a keynote from an award-winning translator, followed by two panel events and three workshops focusing on literary translation from Arabic, as well as both a European language and one of Manchester’s community languages (Arabic, German and Bangla/Bengali) into English.

The Instituto Cervantes Manchester and Leeds presents the second edition of the lecture series: “Acquiring a Second Language: Why do we find it so difficult?”, coordinated by Idoia Elola (Texas Tech University) y Ana Oskoz (University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), a forum aimed at teachers, language studentes, parents and the general public, which will consider how we learn a second, or a heritage language. Presenters will discuss various elements and difficulties that come with second-language acquisition including: myths and realities surrounding language acquisition and age, the effect of explicit knowledge and how it can affect learning, the use of language according to the context in which it is spoken, and the effect of education on our ability to learn a second language. The first lecture will celebrate the International Mother Language Day and will be given by Greg Kessler (Ohio University).

This online event is being held to explain more about ‘Mother Tongue Other Tongue’, an annual free competition for young people aged from 8-18. The competition invites pupils to share poems or songs from their mother tongue or from a language they are learning.
This event is aimed at anyone wishing to run the project in their school or community setting. It will provide resources and ideas that can be used directly in classrooms, online or in groups.

Language connects individuals and communities, builds relationship across time and space, contributes to who we are and how we understand the world around us. It is for this reason that we want to develop a manifesto display that reflects language as a right. And we are keen to hear your thoughts as we celebrate International Mother Language Day.
Join us in the Manchester Poetry Library for a family fun session that aims to build a language manifesto with children and families. This is an engaging and creative activity for the whole family. This session will be lead by Dr Khawla Badwan.
