I'm a couple of volumes behind on Monstress, but this might be the most satisfying page I've seen in a comic in my life. Maika's been reckoning with herself and her own guilt for the whole series, but Moriko (and her other ancestors) are really the cause of MOST of Maika's problems.

idk man sometimes i like it when video game writers are allowed to plan a series of events that happen in a specific order and affect each other in turn to become an overarching narrative, and i don’t mind trusting those writers to take me through those events in the order that is emotionally effective. i don’t really care if a game forces me to go through the forest area first before i can attempt the icy area because maybe there’s things that happen in the forest area that inform later scenes in the icy area. maybe we don't need more superficial player choice open world concepts if it comes at the cost of the ability to write a story with actual significant plot events and character development in each section

I get that some people don't care about story and just want to explore, but for me personally, I just don't really feel like there's much point in exploring if nothing comes of it. Like, okay, I filled out the map and collected some objects. I'm more interested in how the lives of the player character and NPCs are changed by the journey, and it's difficult to create that kind of emotional impact without some amount of linear storytelling.

I feel like also maybe people don't understand the high cost of player choice. Like sure, there could be an interesting story about what would happen if a player character did something else to what they actually do. But that's not the story that the creators wrote? If you want infinite choice, you're essentially asking the creators to write infinite stories, and that's just not realistic. If you want a lot of choice, you're either going to have a game that takes forever to develop and costs a ton, or you're just going to get a bunch of half-assed stories that don't mean anything. And that's not even considering the mechanical aspects, such as making sure enemies are balanced, gameplay progression is satisfying, player has the abilities/tools they need for the current challenges, etc. Which in an ideal world would also be chosen to complement the story for optimal story-gameplay resonance.

Shout out to I Was a Teenage Exocolonist for having a silly soap opera name but then being one of the most engaging slice-of-life video games I've ever played with some of the most BRUTAL emotional stakes.

Like, yeah you do get to flirt with your childhood friends if you want to, but also you have to hide debilitating visions of future events from all your loved ones, scramble to rescue your childhood friend before she dies in a fucked-up accident when you're seven, try and fail and fail and FAIL to save [REDACTED] from dying in every timeline, watch the unfolding effects of childhood trauma on your friends, scour the alien landscapes for enough food to keep your colony from starving, spend MONTHS in the field and in the xenobiology lab to cure your dad's increasingly-severe medical issues, grapple with loss, deal with fascists, hopefully stage a coup, intentionally expose yourself to radiation, and nearly/actually get eaten by giant alien megafauna.

Also there's an alien you can kiss and a teen dance party.

Props to Terry Pratchett for creating a sprawling 40+ book fantasy series with intricate world building and deeply developed characters while also having a character solely referred to as "the stupid-looking kid" for almost a third of a book, and then, when he is named, his name is just Keith.
