"My name is Andrej. I'm broke, unemployed and chronically ill (long COVID), and my older sister is also unemployed and disabled due to medical malpractice. She has been dealing with severe chronic back pain since 2021, when she started having sudden and horrific back pain, hip pain and right leg pain, to the point where she was incapable of moving. Her general doctor gave her painkillers that barely worked; the PT she tried didn't work, either, and other doctors ignored her or refused to take her seriously. We live in Serbia, where it's a struggle to set foot in the exam rooms of free public doctors, because the wait times are notoriously bad, so we were forced to seek treatment in private clinics unless we wanted to wait months for an exam.

On top of that, I've been going through personal hell with getting anyone to take my own diagnosis seriously. Our parents are dealing with a lot of family drama and financial problems, which are of course also OUR problems, and have given up on my sister because it's “her problem." So most of the burden of paying the medical bills falls on my shoulders, and when I couldn't afford something I was forced to take the ebegging/crowdfunding route or borrow from friends. Repeatedly. It has been a truly exhausting 4 years. Right now we are stuck living with our grandmother who has threatened to kick us out or make us pay rent.

My goal is to have enough money to be able afford: all her meds for a year, PT, her future exams, my future exams, and some financial security in case my grandmother does kick us out. Because we live in Serbia, funds will be routed through my friend Max, who lives in the states."

This whole thing about scanning your face to prove tour age is making me remember, in 2018 while out in paris we got our wallet stolen during a particularly busy night at a lesbian bar. It was very late and with no money to buy metro tickets we were effectively stranded, but some people helped us and we ended up staying the night at a really sweet older man's place. His face was deeply scarred and he was missing an eye. We chatted on our way and he told me about his life, probably to help calm me down. He explained he had been stuck in a house fire 20 years ago and had had multiple rounds of facial reconstruction and a skin graft, but there's only so much surgery can do so he just learned to live with it. I remember he said he liked the queer bars because they're the only place people don't really stare at him.

At some point I took out my phone, and at the time I was using face unlock. This prompted him to tell me all the ways this technology doesn't work on him. How his phone selfie camera doesn't focus right because it's not detecting a face. How he had to update his ID the old fashioned way, because the website kept rejecting his photos. And how it was becoming more and more common, and how it was making his life way harder.

This was 7 years ago, and now whenever I see this sort of technology I think of how that guy can't use it. And how house fires are pretty common, and how anything from being born this way to a skin condition to heavy tattooing can probably cause the same issue. Can these people get age verified ? Will they just lose access to all social media, which are increasingly necessary in society, if this becomes the norm ? These are people who are already driven out of public spaces due to how they look, and they're getting pushed out online too all in the interest of companies wanting more money.

If someone is doing things that don't make Sense, try to understand that it is entirely possible that their brain is probably under an enormous weight and fracturing under the pressure. People who have been stabbed will sometimes talk a circle around the fact that they've been stabbed because stress and shock prevent you from recognizing the distress you are in and what you need to do to seek help for it. PTSD will do this also. You will find yourself repeatedly jamming a bag of frozen fruit into the same spot in the freezer where it doesn't fit and keeps falling, over and over and over, focused on nothing but that bag. You will decide that a beanbag chair is 10000% necessary to your life. You will lose your entire shit because you stubbed your toe on a table and that means the whole setup of your furniture is wrong. These are largely harmless examples. People under strain will also hurt themselves and others. Cornered animals bite. And it doesn't heal the bite to go "Hey, are you okay?" But it might get you to an animal that stops biting, so you can start to heal. And before you had an animal that bit, you probably had an animal that kept doing shit you didn't understand as stress signals

Feelings of fear and anxiety.. and the terror of children returned quickly, after we had at least been in some kind of safety and calm, believing that all this had passed and ended.
