NOT TO MENTION the fact that the prohibition against direct images in Islam was actually the reason for the development of the incredible advances in higher mathematics of the Islamic Golden Age because they were required to create these structures. The Islamic World basically took the ban on images as a “hold my beer” thing and created an entire artistic culture based on mathematics and architecture where art and science fed into and glorified each other, 700 years before the Italian Renaissance.

EVERY SINGLE TIME I HAVE TAKEN A CPR CLASS I have had to be that person who points out that the training videos ALWAYS frame the “male” symptoms as the default universal heart attack experience, while the “female” symptoms are framed as though they’re a deviation from the norm, rather than the primary symptom set that cis women experience.

ALSO: I just showed this post to my roommate, who is an MD at a clinic that specializes in care for the LGBT community in the Baltimore area. I asked her whether hormones were responsible for the difference in the “male/female” symptom arrays. I asked how that would apply to her trans patients (which, she treats a LOT of trans patients). She said, basically, that the longer you’ve taken testosterone the more likely you are to get the intense chest pressure and the arm pain, versus the upper back pressure and shortness of breath.

Obviously I am not a doctor myself, consult your own health care provider, etc.

it is past time we jettisoned the useless false dichotomy of introversion vs. extroversion and just accepted that everybody has a minimum amount of social interaction, failing which, they get really weird. and everybody has a maximum amount of social interaction, exceeding which, they get really weird. these levels are different for everyone, for a variety of reasons, and have no moral dimension. and that is all.

IMO, it’s healthier to conceptualize it this way. So instead of being like “why am I being so weird? I’m an introvert, I like being alone!” you say, “Ah, I must be supergluing googly eyes to my bathroom faucet because I haven’t met my minimum threshold of social interaction and I’m trying to fill that void with these tiny pieces of plastic. Maybe I should invite someone over for dinner. They sure will be surprised by all these eyes watching them while they poop.”

Friendly tip for communicating with your autistic (and other neurodiverse) friends; dont ask open ended questions!

When you ask me “where do you want to go for lunch”, my brain begins to compile a list of ALL the possible places we COULD go, which is like… hundreds of options. I then have to weigh mental pro’s and cons and access all the data I have on those places. Answering your question will take up significant amounts of my mental energy, and if I dont get overwhelmed immediately I will take FOREVER to answer because it’s a BIG question. It might also lead me to ask you a million data modifiers such as - how far are you comfortable traveling, what amount of money would you like to spend, sit down or take out, fancy or fast, are there any foods you cannot eat, etc. A question like that is EXHAUSTING, so much so that it can induce fear and paralysis and then I cannot answer at all!

Instead of an open ended question - try something more specific. “Would you rather have lunch at X, or Y?” - this will give me a clear response path. I only have to weigh data for two outcomes- and it answers some of those modifiers I mentioned before because I can infer data about what kind of lunch you’re looking to have based upon what options you gave me so that even if I dont like one of those two options I can easily find something comparable.

i don’t know how to explain this exactly but i’m tired of mentally ill people being labelled as toxic/ their symptoms being labelled as toxic traits. i have seen so many people cut off their mentally ill friends for being “toxic”. i understand that if someone is going through something, they can be overbearing at times and there’s a point where it might start to impact your life, but i feel like there are people who are so quick to jump to conclusions about why someone is doing something or

“why they are feeling a certain way and label that person as “toxic” when all they really need is support and understanding”

I am feeling a bit ambiguous about this one cause while I completely agree that symptoms of mental illness far too often get treated as if they’re just intentional bad behavior when they really aren’t, I also fully support everyone’s decision to end relationships which no longer benefits them for any reason. So while I definitely agree that you shouldn’t assume that your friends symptoms of mental illness are present just because they want to bother you, if it reaches a point where their symptoms are severely negatively affecting your life and they aren’t actively working on changing their behavior, then I think it’s okay and perfectly valid to distance yourself and cut ties - even if they never intended to hurt you and aren’t being toxic on purpose.

ohhhhohohhoo now THIS is a treat……a case of dumb plant syndrome revealing a forbidden truth……

you see. strawberries are not botanical berries. they’re technically what’s called accessory fruits, meaning that in this case the ‘berry’ part is just an enlarged receptacle. the actual fruits are called achenes, which are the little yellow speckles on the outside of each strawberry and are generally dry, indehiscent, and only contain one seed per fruit (sunflower seeds are a more obvious achene example).

(the above was the best pic i could find showing roughly how the hell this happens, but i’m also going to put this one here because it reads like the strawberry is being publicly shamed for its achene crimes and i think thats hilarious)

so in terms of The Forbidden One up there….either:

1. a mutation or infection confused the the plant and it freaked out and made leaves where fruit was supposed to go (which, to be fair, big mood) or

2. something Happened™ and all the fruits germinated waaaaayyyy earlier than they were supposed to. i….dont have much knowledge about like, strawberry seedlings, but after a brief google search it seems like if they’re all germinating at once they are not like, turning out like normal seedlings. on one hand i suppose this kind of makes sense because holy shit the entire situation like…is NOT normal to begin with, but on the other hand option 1 fits a little better. still, cutting it open would probably give the answer (if it has roots it’s 2, if it doesn’t it’s 1).

on a related note i fucking love plants, man. like. ‘make leaf where fruit go’ followed by casually making leaves where fruit would go is such just like…a plant thing to do. in animals ‘make arm where baby go’ followed by actually making the arm would be absolutely devastating in terms of bodily function, but for this strawberry plant its just like. look at this. its just photosynthesizing. like this plant has fully accepted that it just has new leaves now and has already moved on. like. our soft animal brains could never

They’re also incredibly patient with transphobes and other bigots, and much more so than most of us can manage and I think it’s amazing that they put up with what people say & do
