i was talking to a certain demographic of fanonstans who refuse to read the source material and make up random excuses to defend themselves and yet barge into comic spaces acting like they know shit
idk if it applies to you or not, but for me and thousands of other comic readers, it really is frustrating that we cant even scroll thru OUR tags, scroll thru and enjoy OUR fandom because 90% of it is full of larpers and fanonslop.
if you are in the COMIC BOOK fandom, you're expected to be reading comic books. fanfics should not be your source for characterization and canon. (especially considering 90% of the writers have never touched a comic in their lives sjdfsf) like no. you can not be a true fan of a comic character if all you read of them is fanfics and webtoons.
and it is 100% true. if ur in your own fandoms (wfa/webtoons, dc shows, cbm, etc) then thats fine. stay in your lane and tag appropriately and comic fans wont bother you. but the moment you step into the comic book fandom/spaces, its expected that you have read comic books.
if you want to write fanfics tahts completely fine. but tag appropriately pls?? like if youre talking abt, lets say Flash,. but its CW not comics, then dont put the comic tag?? 😭😭 tagging appropriately is a fandom etiquette you are aware right ?😭
and idk why its such a big thing. this is literally said in every fandom. when you engage in a fandom space, its expected that you know what youre talking about or else you will be called out. thats the norm.
and its true. you cannot say youre a fan of a comic character if you havent read their comics. you are only a fan of either teh adapataton (dcau, cw, dceu/dcu, etc) OR you are a fan of their fanon counterparts which, most of the time, are OCs with made up backstories (ex: tim is not stalker and did not blackmail bruce into being robin, jason was not crime alley's savior and barely gaf abt protecting people during his UTRH era he was only after bruce, etc)
as for there are many comics: we all have to start somewhere. this post isnt for newgens. this post is for people who REFUSE to read and yet claim they know what theyre talking abt (ex: dc stands for disregard canon, when in reality the so-called "canon" theyre talking abt is some fanon hc and never happened in canon. one example i can think of is "dick tried to send tim to arkham" and that literally never happened so what are you disregarding atp? a headcanon??)
and my advice is to start somewhere. believe me one day everything will just click into place. you dont have to read everything in order or read one singular character only, just start somewhere and then one day the timelines, canons, character story/arcs, etc will just click and everything will make sense.
