Cyborgs as Queer & Disabled (Part 5 - Hordak, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power)
Have so much meta/videos about him, the canonical disability rep and the heavily subtextual queerness of his story already, so just an overview, but also couldn’t not mention him with this topic
[Subtitles are coming… at some point, because they’re sadly a lot of work]
WELP! time for a rewatch!
It makes me sad that with the surging popularity of Moo Deng there is not an equivalent resurgence of @worstcats-blog
Ampersands are just partially eaten pretzels.
Whenever someone tries to say something about how the body positivity movement is all about telling people being fat is a healthy lifestyle, I tell them about how I, at the ripe old age of 9 years old, wanted an eating disorder because I knew it could cause irreparable damage to your body so that you would have problems gaining weight even if you managed to recover. That’s right, I would rather having a potentially fatal mental and physical illness than live my life with the baby fat that I naturally had.
My first memory of hating my body was when I was either 4 or 5 and my mom got me one of those cute little kid bikinis for the Fourth of July with little Stars and Stripes all over it so that I could have fun in the blow-up pool in our backyard. However, looking at myself in the Disney princess vanity mirror, I wanted to cry. And even though I was so young and obviously I wasn’t going to look like a skinny model, I still immediately panicked and changed into a one-piece before hiding that kid bikini in the bottom of my drawer.
Today I am a mid-size young woman that still sometimes goes into a depression about my body, but I know that in the big picture, I have recovered greatly from those years of looking at myself in the mirror and telling myself that no one would ever love me (though sometimes that particular thought worms it’s way into my brain).
That is what the body positivity movement is. A way to tell little kids that hey, looking different than the starving models on the runways and in movies isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, even just having bigger girls on the screen and not as jokes or awful caricatures would have made me feel so much better about myself.
I have to reblog the original of this post because all of the comments were like “This is terrible as long as her children aren’t OB*SE!!!!”
Do we see here how glorifying thinness and falsely equating it to health does not promote health in any capacity? And the fact that the mother lost 150 pounds and kept it off for 20 years along with the other evidence from the post just proves to me she has an eating disorder. The science shows that 95% of people cannot lose weight long term and the other 5% often resort to extremely disordered eating/exercising to keep the weight off (aka starvation).
The post really puts all the blame on the mother too, but the thin “healthnut personal trainer” is 100% likely a fatphobe who believed in fatphobic health myths that he pushed on the mother. I have no doubt that their relationship is also disordered since it’s literally based on disordered eating and fitness.
And honestly we cannot ignore the mother’s role in this child abuse, but it’s also important to remember that she is likely a victim of fatphobia and that the abuse she faced from society as a fat person in the past is ultimately the root of all of this. Though by all means, don’t take this as a free pass for her.

Quaint and Deceptive Hand-Drawn Installations Question the Concept of Home and Belonging
Everyone guessed Rosa was gay even before she figured it out. So when is the right time to come out?
Why is it considered okay to limit how much money a disabled person on benefits can have, but "big government" to limit how much money a rich person can have?
And don't respond with "the disabled person is relying on the government". The rich person is also. Do the police protect their ownership of their many houses? Then they're relying on government. Do they own patents to protect their profits from competitors? Then they're relying on government. Do they profit from other people's work and are protected by the police against a worker uprising? Then they're relying on government.
Don't forget corporate subsidies, tax breaks for the rich, specialized loan forgiveness, etc.
The rich get more in assistance from the government than disabled people ever will, and the rest of the economy sees far less benefit from them having it since they hoard and offshore the money. And they don't need the help. Meanwhile disabled people spend it and stimulate the economy, and actually would benefit from more assistance.
So the only real answer someone can give is "because I hate/look down on disabled people and don't think they deserve to have a quality life". But people don't usually like admitting that about themselves.

Hey Joy! Feel free to ignore if you've got low spoons 😊
I was diagnosed with Vocal Cord Dysfunction a few years ago, and it's been annoying but not majorly concerning until recently. My major symptom is gagging, and I've been have gagging episodes nearly every day (sometimes until I vomit) which is extremely discouraging. It tends to flare up when I speak a lot, which I can manage at home but is impossible to avoid at work.
Are there any exercises or tips that you use to help manage your VCD? My PCP tends to brush off most of my issues as anxiety related, which means he gives advice and not any useful information. I'm planning on getting a new PCP, but dealing with insurance is a nightmare lol.
Thank you so much Joy, hope your migraines ease up and please give the mop a smooch for me!
Hey, I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with this, and I'm sorry your PCP is being so dismissive.
If you can, push to find a speech therapist. They can better guide you through breathing and speech exercises that can help you identify your specific triggers and the best way to prevent future attacks. They may also recommend more targeted physical therapy that works to keep the throat and neck muscles in good condition.
Something else you can try is also called a "rescue breath." I'll see if I can describe it, but basically, you purse your lips together (like you're going to blow out a candle) and exhale for as long as you can through your lips, then take two quick breaths through your nose. You do it a couple of times (or however many it takes) to return your breathing to normal. I'm probably not explaining it well, but if you do it right, you can sometimes stop an attack if you can feel one coming on or stop it from getting worse.
But yeah, absolutely find yourself a speech therapist. Also, do your best to keep your neck muscles relaxed. I use heat wraps multiple times a day and also try to roll the tension out when I notice the muscles seizing up--though the way I do that is specific to my cranial instability, so I'd be reluctant to give you the same technique in case it's the opposite of what you need 😅 I also find cervical traction devices helpful, but again mileage may vary.
Best of luck. I hope things improve for you.
Just want to add to this ask that sniffing lavender oil helps me keep the nausea and vomiting at bay when it flares up.

(Something a bit different, based on requests from patrons Diana Bartosh, Jacy Stesney and Luis Graciano who all asked for some form of comforting comic and this little bird just popped to mind. I’ve been thinking about not indulging blind optimism while still pushing back against feeling helpless/ overwhelmed, I hope this spellamthing gets at that, the words feel a bit earnest and embarrassing to share but maybe that’s alright! )

Calories are also bullshit
Calories merely convey the energy given. They are not evil. Calories certainly exist, but the idea of them as an enemy, as something evil, certainly is bullshit.
Technically, food calories ARE bullshit. Mostly because they’re presented as a useful fact about the food, but they’re almost always a rough estimation. Warning, science ahead!
So, there are actually two types of calorie: the small or gram calorie, and the large or food calorie. Most old science textbooks use the gram calorie, which is the amount of energy required to raise one gram of water by one degree celsius. The large calorie is the amount of energy required to raise one kilogram of water by one degree celsius. So if you ever see a “calorie count” that seems to be 1000 times too big or too small, there is a good chance that someone slipped up and used the wrong calorie.
Science doesn’t use calories anymore; they’re Imperial units. One of the more sensible of the Imperial units, except for that whole ‘there’s two of them with the same name’ bit. Science now uses the SI unit, the joule. 1 small calorie is 4.184 J.
Looping back to food: the idea of printing calories on the package is to tell you how much energy is in the food. You CAN scientifically calculate the potential chemical energy of an organic substance using a tool called a “bomb calorimeter”. To excessively simplify, this looks like a pressure cooker in a water bath with a lot of tubing attached. You put the item in the chamber, usually you add a heap of oxygen and maybe a precise amount of water, and then you take a while to burn it to death in an extremely thorough fashion, and measure how the temperature and pressure changes.
This is useless for food, because our body does NOT directly turn food into a cloud of heat and gases. We need to know how much chemical energy was in the food to start with, and then how much is in the waste that comes out the other end, so we can figure out how much got digested. This is, in theory, what is listed by the calories on the package.
The only way to even ATTEMPT a truly accurate measurement of food energy is to feed a known quantity of the food to a volunteer and measure what comes out the other end. This is very tricky, because you can’t just starve someone until their digestive tract is empty before you start (this is both unethical and can also send them into ketosis, which will ruin your data). Different people will digest different amounts of the food. The same person can digest different amounts of the food at different times based on levels of micronutrients and physical activity and hormones etc. We DO have some good data, painstakingly gathered, but it’s a little on the rough side.
A scientist called Atwater took all this data, and lots of careful study about the chemical composition of food, and came up with a way of estimating the amount of digestable energy in food. His system just used the amount of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in a food. Later ones consider things like whether it is a plant or animal protein (because we digest those very differently).
It’s still extremely flawed, and scientists KNOW it is flawed. For example, it can’t really distinguish between “roughage” carbohydrates, sugary carbs or starchy carbs, but those digest in completely different ways. It also doesn’t consider food interactions, which is a huge part of digestion.
The main point calorie labelling was always meant to be comparative. It was so you could look at product A and compare it to product B and go “okay, so this one is a lot more energy-dense” and choose accordingly. It’s not objective. You cannot count your calories and say “I have consumed this much energy today.”
You cannot count your calories and say “I have consumed this much energy today” and if you try that your answer is guaranteed to be completely and utterly wrong.
“Calories in vs calories out” does not work when you cannot possibly know how many calories went in!
(You also can’t measure how many calories went out, but that’s a different rant. Those charts of how many calories you burn doing [x] are also wrong, but admittedly they’re less-wrong.)
And that is why calories are bullshit.
I think it's super important to note that the human body is absolutely *not* a closed system, either. The calories in vs calories out would only work in a closed system, which the human body is not in ANY WAY.
