the wisdom of emperors kickstarter is going live today and i’m mildly feral about the concept (and the snippets i’ve seen on patreon, my god, they’re SO good!!!). like, in-world history? queer history? an annoyed (and very sarcastic) scribe?? trying to determine historical providence and corroboration of current understanding?? citations??? footnotes??? this book was written for me exactly.
anyway here’s the pre-launch link and please, i am begging you, let this get funded because i simply must read this book in its entirety https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/alexandrarowland/the-wisdom-of-emperors-deluxe-collectors-edition?tab=prelaunch-story
A new fantasy novel by Alexandra Rowland, author of A TASTE OF GOLD AND IRON, RUNNING CLOSE TO THE WIND, & YIELD UNDER GREAT PERSUASION
Attention ancient history nerds and fans of really weird and unusual fantasy books, THE WISDOM OF EMPERORS kickstarter campaign just launched!
Hello, btw, I'm Alexandra Rowland, the author of A TASTE OF GOLD AND IRON, RUNNING CLOSE TO THE WIND, YIELD UNDER GREAT PERSUASION, and several other books. This is my new one!!
Inspired by the story of the Ancient Roman emperor Hadrian and his lover Antinous, THE WISDOM OF EMPERORS is a second-world adult fantasy novel written in the style of a fictional academic text. It documents the translation and study of a world-changing artifact discovered in an archaeological dig: a manuscript which provides the clues to finally unravel one of the most perplexing mysteries in all of ancient history.
If this sounds like your jam, go back it on kickstarter! If you're not sure whether it is your jam, the merch reveal updates on the campaign include excerpts from the book so you can get a flavor for it -- the ENTIRE Foreword to the book is on there!
I do not have a publisher to help with a marketing and publicity budget, so this book's success really depends on grassroots support from readers -- if you can spare a signal boost, that'd be amazing.
I'M GONNA GO WALK INTO THE SEA NOW AND BECOME ONE WITH THE MOLLUSCS, but before i do, here is the full summary of the book:
SUMMARY:
An ancient emperor who, along with his entire army, vanished from the historical record for ten years, as if into thin air. A long-suffering scribe, dragged along on a quest that was doomed from the start, furiously scrawling his thoughts in a manuscript that will be lost for millennia. An enslaved young man, as beautiful as a marble statue, breaking his chains and flying to freedom. And a patient, steadfast scholar, dauntlessly seeking the answer to a mystery that has plagued historians for two thousand years.
The great tragedy of studying history is that there is so much we will never know. But a recent archaeological excavation has discovered an ancient manuscript, allegedly the journal kept by one of Emperor Cabian’s scribes during the years of his mysterious disappearance. Though most historians initially dismissed it as a hoax or a forgery, Amatio Orlanti took on the challenge—not only proving the authenticity of the manuscript, but translating it, uncovering the most jaw-dropping corroborating sources and, at last, presenting these astonishing revelations to the world: The truth of Cabian’s ill-fated journey, the twin poisons of imperialist violence and desperate, misguided love that drove him relentlessly onwards, and the ultimate fate of his lost beloved, the legendary beauty Anaticula. This new edition of Orlanti’s dissertation, with its academic commentaries and explanatory footnotes now revised for the general public, offers a glimpse of one of the most famous figures of Ancient Lausa—and casts a light on the rot and depravity lying behind the empire’s outward magnificence.
Miracles in history and archaeology just don’t happen… except when they do.

unpopular opinion: Vimes is kind of drama queen
Sam “held a burning hot coal until it nearly took the skin off his hand while maintaining perfect calm and eye contact with the asshole in need of intimidation Just Because” Vimes? Sam “sitting on the stoop with a mug of cocoa and a cigar, cautiously aware of every inch of the scene he’s building” Vimes? Sam “could just tear his sleeve to show the mark of the Summoning Dark but instead tears off his whole goddamn shirt” Vimes? A drama queen? Reaching a bit don’t you think
Yep, certainly doesn’t seem to describe Sam “pretends to eat poison as a power move” Vimes. Not Sam “buries an axe in the table in the Rats Chamber” Vimes.
I mean are we really talking about Sam “yes a whole room full of candles with wicks dipped in holy water is the best way to beat this vampire” Vimes, here? Sam “has fought bad guys on top of a speeding train AND a riverboat during a flood” Vimes, really? Definitely Sam “nearly gets shot in the head by a crossbow bolt that shatters his shaving mirror and then uses the bolt to prop up a shard of said mirror to finish shaving” Vimes we’re discussing here?
excuse me?????
vimes did not resign from his post in protest, observe the rest of the watch resign from their posts in protest, recruit them into a militia, sail to the country they were at war with, and attempt to arrest two different armies for disturbing the peace so you could sit here and call him a drama queen, as though drama was some myffic quality bestowed by an accident of birth and not the inherent right of every creatively petty and histrionic citizen of ankh-morpork
vimes is a drama public employee
Luo Binghe's little obsession
you cant even begin poems with "i will sodomise and facef uck you" anymore. because of woke .
Holy fuck
I vaguely recall discourse about the dictionary pulling it's punches when it came to writing the definition for whatever latin verb means 'face-fuck' because 'to be the recipient of oral sex' is clean and true but doesn't come close enough to describing what the word means.
Yeah, Catullus gets censored a lot! I suspect a bit of it is just that we often get this idea of poets and poetry as... Light and fluffy?
Probably just because of what gets taught in schools. You end up getting the impression that a poems are about one of
Being sad
Walking through nature
Being sad whilst walking through nature.
Which is a slightly reductive take on a whole fucking medium.
Anyway, Catullus was less the stereotypical "upper class guy with a lot of education who loves nature and being depressed" sort of poet and is more to the "battle rapper" end of poetry.
He's got multiple poems that are basically diss tracks. This is exactly why Poem 16 (this one) comes straight out the gate with "I AM GOING TO BUTTFUCK AND FACEFUCK YOU" (lowercase letters wouldn't be developed for a few hundred more years, by definition everything Catullus wrote was in ALL UPPERCASE): Catullus is directing this poem at Marcus Furius Bibaculus (Bibaculus to his friends), who had an affair with Juventius: a woman Catullus had a (possibly unrequited) love for. In fact, this sort of reputation is part of what Catullus is saying. He's like "oh, you think I'm some weak pansy faggot because I'm a poet? Let's see how you feel after I shove my huge* manly dick up all your holes, bitch."
Anyway the whole reason I was supposed to be replying is to talk about how Latin is an amazing language to swear in. They've got some very fun words like irrumo, ittumare which means basically "to fuck someone's mouth", but in a single word. Face-fuck is really the best translation English has, and that's two words.
Plus Latin is an infected language! He didn't just say "face fuck", he said the first person singular future active indicative of "face fuck".
Irrumabo is a single word that packs all this info into its infected form. It's not just "what" (face fucking), it's who and when and how.
Who: me, singular. "We" are not going to face fuck you, I, personally, and going to face fuck you.
When: in the future. This is a thing that's going to happen. Latin has multiple moods for this, the indicative, imperative, and subjunctive.
He doesn't use the subjunctive, which'd mean "I hope I facefuck you: it'd be great if someday I get to face fuck you".
He doesn't use the imperative, which is for stating commands. He's not saying "get facefucked, idiot".
He uses the indicative. This is for stating facts. He's saying this as just a thing that will happen. As surely as the sun will rise tomorrow... I will facefuck you.
It's also active not passive, which means it's not "you will be facefucked by me". It's active, meaning it's "I am going to facefuck you".
The word is also derived from the word for teats? As in, it meant something like suckling?
Catullus is saying you're going to suck his cock like a baby feeding from their mother, and he's going to make you do this. This is just a thing that is going to happen.
And he says that all in ONE SINGLE WORD.
Latin is a lovely language for this sort of thing.
(there's also a lot of fascinating stuff about the second line of the poem: he calls Aurelius as pathicus, and Furius a cinaedus. These mean slightly different things! Translating them as "cocksucker" and "butt boy" is definitely one way to do it, but there's more to say about this, but this post is already way too long)
Anyway, while "first poet to ever get his bone on" is highly inaccurate (Sappho was centuries earlier! You think a woman who was so gay she gave us two of our words for WLW didn't BONE?), he definitely was one of the poets who most noticeably Absolutely Fucked and he made sure you knew it.
* he wouldn't have said "huge", this is a localization for our culture. The ancient romans thought big dicks were ugly, unrefined, and comical. (They borrowed this from the ancient greeks, incidentally)
I must know if the original Latin was also written in a dick shape
sadly not. Latin has a lot of fun tricks you can do with word order (because it's inflected, you can move words around for emphasis) and typography, but it wasn't penis-shaped originally.
that's a good way to localize it to english, though. Catullus 16 is 100% a poem about how Big* Catullus's dick is. * metaphorically, you understand. He's say he's got Big Dick Energy, not a literally big dick, because that wouldn't have worked for his culture.
@official-penis-posts ancient penis posting
"[...]who had an affair with Juventius: a woman Catullus had a (possibly unrequited) love for."
Correction: Juventius was a Local Twink that Catullus had the hots for and who definitely snubbed him and flounced off with someone else. Catullus' on-again-off-again girlfriend was Lesbia. Scholars disagree about which poem Furius and Aurelius teased him about that made him write Poem 16 -- could have been either 5 (about Lesbia) or 48 (about Juventius).
This is an important point because people need to know that All Roman Men Are Messy Bisexuals (and if they're not, then all their friends think that's super weird and kind of perverted).
this quote is sending me
I cannot begin to stress how important Alysa Liu is to a sport like figure skating. This is a sport that is rife with abuse and that has silenced women and has forced them to do as they’re told in order to win medals. This is a sport where authoritative figures exercise an immense amount of control over athletes from their childhoods.
Alysa left the sport because of burn out. Because of what she went through. When she came back, she said that she’d skate to whatever music that she wanted. That she’d be in charge of her training schedule. That she’d be able to take a very active role in choreographing her programs and choosing her costumes. Her entire comeback has been about her taking authority over her career. She is in charge of her own career, as it should be. As it should always be.
And she is now the Olympic Champion. Her trajectory is proof that an athlete taking control of their training, of their joy, and of their competitive career is absolutely paramount to success in sport.
Such a great, revealing peek into the transmisogynist’s mindset
they are so fucking angry we're having fun
None of those things are women exclusive either
Transmisogyny loops back to misogyny classic, like a snake sucking its own dick for eternity
“trannies don’t have to look after their kids” yeah because we’re not allowed to have them
Reminder that transmisogyny (especially of the TERF variety) is rooted in bioessentialism (the pseudoscientific belief that your physical body determines traits like interests, behaviors, and skills that are not physically linked) and gender essentialism (that “biological” gender specifically dictates behavior). ie women are “biologically” better caregivers or more naturally compassionate or men are “biologically” more aggressive or dominant.
To be somewhat hyperbolic, it’s a belief that males and females are fundamentally different animals somehow— this often accompanies a belief that people with different skin pigmentation are also fundamentally different animals, unsurprisingly, which is why so many transmisogynists are also staggeringly racist.
I point out the TERF connection specifically because that ideology is deeply rooted in the belief that women are inherently physically inferior and inherently morally superior to men. Men are natural predators, women are natural victims, but also if women ruled the world there’d be no war because they’re biologically better at statecraft I guess.
Human beings are some of the least sexually dimorphic mammals on the planet. There is next to no actual physical difference between the traditional sexes that cannot be linked to culture— ie girls are widely discouraged from doing sports, especially sports which require upper body strength, and thus have less upper body strength on average. But female athletes who spend time developing upper body strength close the gap created by cultural upbringing and will have the same upper body strength as men.
There is no skill where the least skilled male will still match or exceed the most skilled female. There is no “biological advantage.” Just different skill levels and weight classes. That’s why feminists were arguing so hard for getting rid of gender segregation in sports back in the 90’s, before transmisogyny (and especially transmisogynoir) dragged the conversation back to the 50’s.
The few differences there actually are between a male sexed and a female sexed body can be almost totally reversed by influencing ONE hormone. Our bodies are so similar and so ready to switch sides on a dime that people sexed as female can straight up grow a phallus. It’s so easy to develop breast tissue that 35% of men experience gynocomastia— people sexed as male developing breasts— at some point in their lives, and estimates show 70% of adolescent boys will experience it during puberty.
We have no idea how prevalent most intersex conditions really are because they generally have so little influence on the person’s life or health that unless some other condition causes them to get a full body mri or similar, they will never know! The mortician embalming your dead body may be the only person who ever knows you had fully developed ovaries or internal testes.
We are the same animal! Our bodies are the same! Our brains are the same! Our bones are the same! Even our organs are largely the same!
Any road that starts from the assumption that you are fundamentally, biologically distinct from another nearly identical member of the same species will lead you nowhere but pseudo scientific justification for bigotry.
Once you have accepted the premise that your own opposite sexed sibling is a different kind of animal than you, you are primed to accept that explanation for any other demographic group that it has historically benefited someone for you to despise.
Bioessentialism is bullshit pseudoscience.
Do not fall for it.
you know that, post-coming out, compilations start popping up online from years of nhl mic'd up promos that nobody ever thought twice about before that mostly consist of shane saying "microphone" when ilya skates up to him.
being so fr when I say that transmisogyny has put feminism back like 50 years
what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past ‘dresses are for women and pants are for men.’ i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we’ve made
“We’re in danger of losing what the entire second wave of feminism, what the entire second wave of women’s liberation was built on, and that was ‘Biology is not destiny’. ‘One is not born a woman,’ Simone de Beauvoir said, ‘one becomes one’. Now there’s some place where transsexual women and other women intersect. Biological determinism has been used for centuries as a weapon against women, in order to justify a second-class and oppressed status. How on Earth, then, are you going to pick up the weapon of biological determinism and use it to liberate yourself? It’s a reactionary tool.”
— Quote by Leslie Feinberg, from TransSisters: The Journal of Transsexual Feminism, issue 7, volume 1. 1995.

guys I'm shaking I need to write a fucking essay on Kazakhstani skating and Denis Ten and why this win is so so historically significant but I can't even find the words to start on my god MIKHAIL SHAIDOROV OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST IN MEN'S FIGURE SKATING
Okay. Okay.
First, I should say that Kazakhstan is not a country well-known for figure skating. Unless I'm missing someone, there have been less than a dozen Kazakhstani figure skaters to even qualify for the Olympics. Even hardcore figure skating fans can probably only name a couple skaters other than Shaidorov off the top of their heads. If you can name anyone, it's probably Elizabet Tursynbaeva, who became the first woman to land a quad in a senior international competition in 2019... and Denis Ten.
Now, who's Denis Ten?
Denis Ten was a Kazakhstani figure skater (of the Korean ethnic minority group of Kazakhstan) who started skating at an outdoor rink and trained in a shopping mall for much of his childhood. He is best known for being the Sochi 2014 bronze medalist, where he had a shocking comeback from his 9th place short program with a 3rd place free skate. It was the first time a Kazakhstani skater had EVER won an Olympic medal for figure skating, and because of that, he is widely credited for popularizing the sport in Kazakhstan.
And he had a very successful career outside of Sochi! (Although he was unfortunately injured for his next Olympic season and placed 27th at Pyeongchang.) He was on the Worlds podium twice, won Four Continents, and always had a good showing at Grand Prix events. You can look at his many accolades here. He battled injuries for many seasons, but he still had an incredible career.
As you might imagine, it’s hard to become a professional figure skater in a country with so few ice skating rinks that your best skaters practice in malls. Figure skating is a sport for the wealthy. It’s expensive to get started and it’s even more expensive to get professional training. And even if you have the money, if you live somewhere without good rinks and good coaches... well, that's it for a lot of skaters. People from countries with small skating federations are simply at a disadvantage due to a lack of resources. And that's not even touching the politics of judging and Grand Prix assignments and Worlds slots, etc etc.
Ten was lucky enough to be scouted by a Russian coach after winning a competition in Omsk, Russia in 2003 when he was 10 years old (I hope he flew because that’s a 20+ hour drive from his hometown of Almaty). He was invited to that coach’s training camp and later invited to join the club full-time. In 2013 he moved to California to train under a USAmerican coach. Training internationally is common for skaters from small federations, and personally I think it’s a bit of a tragedy. Like many skaters, Ten was in a position to represent his country on the international stage at the cost of being able to live there year-round.
But Kazakhstan was always in Denis Ten’s heart. After his historic 2014 Olympic bronze win, he organized an unprecedented ice show in his home country featuring 12 (TWELVE!) Olympic medalists from all over the world, selling out two different cities in a country with virtually no cultural history of figure skating. The money from the Astana show benefitted a child with cancer, while the money from the Almaty shows went to promoting figure skating in Kazakhstan. And he continued working to develop the popularity of winter sports in the country for years afterwards, serving as one of the major advocates for Almaty’s 2022 Olympic bid.
I wish we could say that he was still advocating for the sport today, but in July of 2018, Denis Ten was tragically murdered during an attempted carjacking. He was 25 years old.
It is not an exaggeration to say that Denis Ten changed Kazakhstani skating forever. Part of his inspiration for bringing so many international skaters to Kazakhstan for his ice show was that he knew many skaters who were curious about the country, because it wasn’t one where they ever competed. Now the Denis Ten Memorial Cup has been held annually in Almaty since 2019, bringing skaters from around the world to Kazakhstan.
And you would be hard-pressed to find any young Kazakhstani skater who doesn’t look up to Denis Ten, Mikhail Shaidorov included. Ten isn’t Mikhail Shaidorov’s only inspiration (like all of us, he’s a big Yuzuru fan). But he does list Ten as one of his major influences, and in 2024 he said, “Denis Ten told the world that Kazakhstan has figure skating. Now I can remind people of that." (Please excuse the machine translation, as I do not speak Russian.)
And when Shaidorov talks about how proud he is to be a Kazakhstani skater, he talks about how he got his start in the very same shopping mall rink where Denis Ten once trained. And while he frequently attends international training camps, he mainly lives and trains in his hometown of Almaty.
Shaidorov’s win today is a historic first in many ways. It is the first gold medal Kazakhstan has ever won for figure skating. It is their first Winter Olympics gold medal since Vladimir Smirnov won for cross-country skiing in 1994. But it is also the continuation of a Kazakhstani skating legacy begun by Denis Ten.
And I like to think that Denis would be proud.
just adding that denis wasn't only an accomplished skater, he was also a beautiful one! gorgeous posture, effortless flow across the ice, and one of the best triple axels you'll ever see.
if you're keen to rewatch some of his best performances, there's the sochi free skate, but i also love his linked short and free programs to the artist, and his program to S.O.S. d'un terrien en détresse performed by dimash (which i still think of as his music after this many years, though he never skated it clean)

Before ice dance starts I have an important PSA for all the fans only tuning in for the Olympics who have not watched the rest of the figure skating season:
You do not, under any circumstances, have to hand it to Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier-Beaudry.
We do not root for rape apologists, we make fun of them and manifest their downfall. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Believe survivors.
