i've been saying this meme aloud to my friends and family for years now and i realized i never put it into text format so i'm subjecting you all to it.
jokes to make after failure that aren’t self-deprecating:
I’m the best to ever do it
Nobody saw that (best if said loudly)
No one’s ever done it like me
I could be President/they should make me President
Behold, a mere fraction of my power!
The public wants to be me soooooo bad
I’m an expert in (thing you just failed at)
How could this have happened to god’s favorite princess?
Nothing ibuprofen and a glass of water cant fix
I’m being sabotaged
Apple TV Murderbot + Text posts
me: So then we take the liquified wood pulp, and dry it again, into these thin sheets. caveman: [confused, but trying to keep up] uh huh. me: And we take the graphite stick - it doesn't need to be wrapped in wood like this, but we like making them this way so you don't get graphite on your hands. And that's what we draw with. caveman: [eyes lighting up] Oohhh so you use the wood pulp sheets to paint on them, like hides? me: Exactly! And now, you could use this method to draw anything you can visualise with your mind's eye, but for the sake of this demonstration, let's draw a vision of a woman with features of an animal whose powers and traits she represents, and a figure that is stylised and exaggerated beyond what nature really allows. caveman: As wide as she is tall, with tits to match? me: Exactly. caveman: This is the only sensible use of this technology.
i do think theres something sad about how largely only the literature that's considered especially good or important is intentionally preserved. i want to read stuff that ancient people thought sucked enormous balls
Time to take this post entirely too seriously:
I often wonder if this is why you so commonly see the sentiment that we are in an era of uniquely bad literature, or at least that the fact that most books don't have artistic aspirations and are not aiming to be anything other than mindless entertainment is new. In fact what's new is the idea that everything is worth preserving (and also the internet making it easier to preserve it). The dumb artistically unambitious trash books of the past have survived only sporadically, because people thought of them as literally disposable.
When I was in college I had a professor who was an expert on detective fiction. He had a longstanding beef with the idea that "Murders in the Rue Morgue" was the first detective story. He thought that it seemed way too polished to be inventing a new genre, and also that the whole orangutan business had the vibe of someone subverting preexisting audience expectations and maybe engaging in a bit of stealth parody. With the help of some student volunteers, he went trawling through old magazines and newspapers and found hundreds of detective stories from the early 1800s that just hadn't garnered enough individual attention to be remembered. This was because most of them sucked balls. He created an online archive of them, so you too can read these mostly terrible stories.
fuuuuck i just realized that the future idealized version of myself cant exist without current me being the catalyst for change and doing hard things. has anybody heard about this
Gurathin's question
Call it the Gurathin simp in me, but I have a few thoughts on this passage in particular that I wanted to share.
“He said, “Did they punish you, for the deaths of the mining team?”
It wasn’t completely a surprise. I think they all wanted to ask about it, but maybe he was the only one abrasive enough. Or brave enough. It’s one thing to poke a murderbot with a governor module; poking a rogue murderbot is a whole different proposition.
I said, “No, not like you’re thinking. Not the way a human would be punished. They shut me down for a while, and then brought me back online at intervals.”
He hesitated. “You weren’t aware of it?”
Yeah, that would be the easy way out, wouldn’t it? “The organic parts mostly sleep, but not always. You know something’s happening. They were trying to purge my memory. We’re too expensive to destroy.”
He looked out the port again. We were flying low over trees, and I had a lot of my attention on the terrain sensors. I felt the brush of Mensah’s awareness in the feed. She must have woken when Gurathin spoke. He finally said, “You don’t blame humans for what you were forced to do? For what happened to you?”
This is why I’m glad I’m not human. They come up with stuff like this. I said, “No. That’s a human thing to do. Constructs aren’t that stupid.”
What was I supposed to do, kill all humans because the ones in charge of constructs in the company were callous? Granted, I liked the imaginary people on the entertainment feed way more than I liked real ones, but you can’t have one without the other.”
— All Systems Red (Kindle Single): The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
At this point in the story, MB holds some pretty righteous dislike for Gurathin due to Gurathin reading its logs and constantly testing it and is assuming all the worst intentions on Gurathin’s part. It treats everything Gurathin does with suspicion. So when Gurathin asks if Murderbot blames humans for what happened to it in this scene, it immediately assumes Gurathin is asking whether it’s angry at humans for the memory wipe. This is apparent when it comments how it would be stupid to get mad at all humans because a few at the company are callous. The techs at the company. Not whoever used a hack or malware or combat override module on it. The memory wipe was done by the company in pursuit of maintaining the profit from Murderbot’s continued use, but the memory wipe was not malicious. Therefore, it does not make sense to put real blame on anyone (except the Corporation Rim structure in general) for the memory wipe because that’s considered baseline normal (though that’s a different set of fridge horrors). And memory wipe isn’t enough for the generally minimum-damage-possible Murderbot to want to murder all humans.
But, looking closely, whether Murderbot was mad about the memory wipe is NOT actually what Gurathin asked. While he may not completely trust Murderbot yet, Gurathin has seen enough of Murderbot and apparently knows enough about constructs (I doubt Gurathin could have picked out Murderbot’s rogue behavior when Murderbot has been successfully hiding from people supposedly with more SecUnit experience for the last 4 years if he didn’t have some detailed knowledge on how SecUnits and their governor modules worked) to know that what happened at Ganaka Pit was neither voluntary nor was it a malfunction. Murderbot still believes the massacre was due to a glitch or fault from the company being cheap at this point and wouldn’t have reason to make the logical jump Gurathin has. I suspect Gurathin has realized almost a full book earlier than Murderbot itself does that Ganaka Pit was a hack like the combat override modules and that Murderbot would not have been a willing participant.
That would be more than enough to hold a grudge against a human or group of humans over.
So what Gurathin actually asked was “Do you blame humans for turning you into a murder machine against your will?” rather than “Do you blame humans for wiping your memory?”
Oh Murderbot. So perceptive in some things. So blind in others.
Related, I suspect if Murderbot ever did find out who did the Ganaka Pit hack, we’d find out just how much it supposedly doesn’t hold grudges.

English has different words for mouse and rat but in Chinese they're both the same creature (laoshu) so I asked my mom well how do you differentiate between mice and rats. She, clearly having never felt the need to do so, was like uhh big laoshu and little laoshu I guess. Then I went online to see how the difference between (the English words) "mouse" and "rat" was being explained to CN->EN learners and there are numerous articles delving deep into the analysis. Bigger vs smaller, indoors vs outdoors, cute and favorable connotations vs evil and ugly, tail length, fear factor, emphasis on the fact that you cannot call it a "computer rat." Much thought is being expended on this little mystery of the English language
Last time I was looking for an apartment, the guy showing me a room that opened directly to the alley was like 你怕老鼠嗎?and I, hoping to distinguish mouse vs rat, asked 大的還是小的? To which he replied, with great satisfaction: 都有!😃
Translation: "Are you afraid of rodents?" "Big ones or small ones?" "We've got both."
From a project I was working on before going in another direction, but still wanted to post this. Inspired by this photo of mourning doves nesting in the fossil of a triceratops, and how it tells us that the world can end, just not forever.
Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).
When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".
When the boat is still being built, your say "it".
When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".
When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".
When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.
If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").
If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")
If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").
If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.
If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.
I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.
tiktok is such an awful app, it's almost designed to feed you misinformation and expose you to insane discourse. unlike beloved tumblr, the app that feeds me misinformation and exposes me to insane discourse
No, no, no, you see on tiktok an algorithm feeds you misinformation. On Tumblr I feed myself misinformation from my charcuterie board of hand-selected unhinged mutuals.
None of that mass market junk. Only artisanal, small batch, sustainably cultivated, fair trade horseshit.
