So, people are always claiming that Anakin in the Clone Wars is "rebellious" and disobeys his superiors. However, I have a different take on this.
Anakin carries the rank of General in the GAR, and so to Obi Wan and Mace Windu and others. Ergo, he is only subject to the Council in Jedi Matters.
In relation to the military, Obi Wan and the others do not outrank him. He is the same rank as them and so thier equal. Therefore he is not, as is popularly believed defying orders from his senior ranking officers (especially since they all seem to have been appointed to that rank at more or less the same time).
The command structure in the Clone Wars is mildly military at best, if we're being honest. Like, I have no idea how it works. I mean, a literal 14-year-old girl with zero combat experience is a Commander outranking the experienced Clone Captain who is actually a 10-year-old. The whole thing is insane. When every Jedi knight is technically a Jedi General, who is in charge of anything?
The truth is though that Anakin is, if not rebellious, he's certainly something. Like, he follows the letter of his orders if not the spirit. In The Malevolence arc he is told to have his fleet continue to the rendezvous and not have them search for survivors from Plo's fleet, so he sends his fleet on ahead and goes to conduct the search himself in his personal junker. He follows orders, he just also weasels his way around them in true passive-agressive slave fashion.
He also does not shy away from disagreeing with his superiors when he thinks they're wrong. In a culture which prioritizes consensus and obedience and can literally read people's thoughts, his anger might read to his superiors as rebellious, even if his actions don't.
Yeah I've always thought the big issue was that Anakin does disobedience wrong according to the social norms of the Jedi.
They actually mind 'not doing what you were told' way less than 'defensive or confrontational attitude,' because obedience is just of routine practical value with some symbolic importance, while 'not flipping your shit' is a vital religious value underpinned by unreasoning terror.
But Anakin does not grok that because he's from a very different culture, and for him the ability to get away with having attitude is a fundamental barometer of how much agency he has a right to or can get away with, so the absence of punishment when he does his own thing hasn't led to any sense of security that it won't happen next time, just an increasingly large pit of ?????????!!!!! >:[
And unfortunately the Jedi as of the Prequel era have folded 'being a conforming part of their culture,' 'moral purity,' and 'religious attainment' into one poorly-differentiated mass. Because controlling every Jedi's developmental path so no one could have Backstory Reasons for becoming a Sith has been a baked-in norm they can't see objectively for something approaching one thousand years.

Hi, you speak Vietnamese, right? :D Can you tell me how much of a difference there is between Quynh and Quy`nh with the y` which I can't type and whether the latter is correct, because neither my phone nor my laptop lets me combine Ys and apostrophes but I'm sure I could figure it out if it's important... I know for example in German there's a huge difference between a,o,u and Ă€,ö,ĂŒ and it hurts to see it used incorrectly xD so I wouldn't want to do that to people in another language! Thx :)
okay lemme *roll my sleeves up* because this is the 2nd time iâve received this kind of question. youâll never know how much i love the way you care so deeply about the character and the actor, no matters the fucking weird language.
okay first, it should be Quỳnh, the mark is placed over the letter, not next to it (like Quy`nh). But itâs fine baby I know you canât type it.
and
1- Thereâs not so many differences between words with and without marks. No technically itâs fucking different BUT, WE KNOW, as we are masters at Vietnamese, we can easily understand what do you mean, 99%.
2- Itâs totally fine to write Viet words without the diacritic the tone marks, as Vietnamese is not your first language, as you are foreigners and your keyboard doesnât allow you to do so.
In the movie, they donât use the tone marks for Quynh (in the subtitles) nor Van Veronica Ngo (in the credits).
3- If you use marks, use them correctly, or itâs gonna be hilarious. (âQuỳnhâ and âQuĂœnhâ have different meanings)
Vietnamese usually donât write tone marks for Viet names in an English sentence, because we think it just could make things complicated, or just because we turned off the Vietnamese keyboard.
Some of us sometimes even text in Vietnamese without any marks, for many reasons, and people still got it.
Why we donât insist you on typing a complete Viet name with marks: Here are all the marks you may never see:
a - ĂĄ Ă áșŁ ĂŁ áșĄ áș„ áș§ áș© áș« áș áșŻ áș± áșł áș” áș·

Hello! I was wondering if I could ask you a question about something I noticed in post 136427994491 (and in tradition Chinese photography in general). I've noticed that there are sometimes a red marking on a women's forehead. Do these markings mean anything? I'm particularly curious about the one that looks like a flower and the ones that are a dot
Hi, of course Iâm happy to answer your question!
The forehead markings are called âhuadian/è±éż", and they are a purely ornamental type of accessory that was most popular during the Tang Dynasty. Huadian came in a variety of colors (red, green, yellow - but mostly red), shapes (flowers/petals, animals - birds/fish, etc.), and materials (paint, paper, gold, pearls, petals, fish bones, seashells, feathers, etc.). Nowadays it is usually painted on/a temporary tattoo. Fouryearsofshades has a write-up on huadian here. Below - historical huadian:
Huadian can be worn on the cheeks, as seen in the two left pictures in the 2nd row above - these are called mianye/éąé„ or xiaoye/çŹé„. They usually took the form of a dimple about one centimeter from each side of the lips, and came in a variety of shapes, including coins, peaches, birds, and flowers.
There is a legend about the origin of huadian, recounted by Hua Mei in the book Chinese Clothing (pdf):
âThe Huadian or forehead decoration was said to have originated in the South Dynasty, when the Shouyang Princess was taking a walk in the palace in early spring and a light breeze brought a plum blossom onto her forehead. The plum blossom for some reason could not be washed off or removed in any way. Fortunately, it looked beautiful on her, and all of a sudden became all the rage among the girls of the commoners. It is therefore called the âShouyang makeupâ or the âplum blossom makeup.â This makeup was popular among the women for a long time in the Tang and Song Dynasties.â
The flower/petal shapes typically represent the plum blossom. Iâm not sure if the dot represents anything significant, besides being a common shape.
Below - actresses wearing huadian and mianye in film/tv:
Hope this helps! :)Â
Edit: See here for post identifying the the actresses/films/tv series in the compilation above.
Huadian (è±éż) originated as a form of hair ornament, derivative of the ancient huasheng (è±è). They were plate shaped ornaments that decorated a noblewomanâs crown. Their number, along with the number of clusters of flower ornaments, decided the wearerâs rank. Later in the Tang dynasty, dianchai (éżé), the Dian Pin, was used to refer to double pronged hairpins with a rounded flower-shaped top. These were worn as part of a womanâs wedding gown. Confusing enough, after the Northern and Southern Dynasties, dianhua (éżè±) referred to a womanâs forehead marking, while huasheng took on the meaning of thin flower ornaments made of paper or gauze or metal foil and stuck to a womanâs hair at the temples. To distinguish between the ornaments, the forehead flower was also called huazi (è±ć), or âlittle flowerâ. It was combined with e-huang (éąé»), a cosmetic trend where the forehead was painted yellow in a form of primitive contouring, to form huahuang (è±é»), flower and yellow pigment.
A particularly patient and creative woman could paint on her own huadian, but most women spared themselves the time and effort by using pre-cut huadian stickers, these stickers could be made of gauze, gold and silver foil, paper, feathers, mica sheets, and, for the high maintenance court ladies, compressed pigment made from camellia seed oil. For a while in the Song Dynasty, they were even made from fish bones! Called âmarine allureâ (鱌ćȘć), the smell of these fishy charms became the bane of many a gentlemanâs love life.
As one of the most beautiful trends to emerge from ancient China, huadian has a multitude of associated origin stories. The earliest story, from the Jin Dynasty, tells of how, during the Three Kingdoms period, Sun He, a prince of the Wu kingdom, accidentally smashed his crystal ruyi scepter over his wifeâs head during a drunken dance. Though he quickly cleaned and dressed her wound with an ointment of powdered otter bones, jade, and amber, the doctors had mixed in too much amber, and as a result, when the ladyâs wound healed, she was left with a red spot on her forehead. This gave her a special, elegant charm, and soon other women painted spots on their foreheads to try and emulate her. Fittingly, around the same time, across the Yangtze, Xue Yelai (è〿„), a consort of the Wei Emperor Cao Pi (of the Luo goddess fame, currently a playable character in Dynasty Warriors) crashed her head through a glass screen when attending upon the Emperor in his study. It was late at night and the poor girl had never seen glass before, being rather new to the palace. Fortunately, no lasting damage was done besides two long gashes besides her temples. They healed into two red crescents that Cao Pi praised as resembling the rising sun peeking over the horizon. Other women in the Wei Harem painted red crescents resembling Xue Yelaiâs scars on their faces, hoping to attract the Emperor. These two injury-inspired cosmetic tricks became huadian and xiehong (æçșą). Later, during the Five Dynasties, legends claimed that the First Emperor once had a vision of the Queen of the Gods, and to show his faith, ordered his court ladies to decorate their faces in the same way as the goddess. During the Song Dynasty, the author Gao Cheng records that during the Song Dynasty of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, a plum blossom left a mark on the beautiful Princess Shouyangâs (毿éłć Źäž») forehead. He also tells another story, where one of Wu Zetianâs chief advisers, Shangguan Wan-Er (äžćźć©ćż), angered the Empress and was punished by having a red dot tattooed on her forehead. To hide this scarlet letter, she painted flower patterns over it. Another variation of the same legend claims she clipped part of her hair to hide her forehead and thus invented bangs. Known for both her wit and her charm, this female Prime Minister was certainly a trendsetter.
Thank you for sharing this historical background!

THE AMOUNT OF IRONY I-
Not to be âThat guyâ, but writing is a form of art.
At the top of the world, the Inuit culture has developed a sophisticated way to sculpt kids' behavior without yelling or scolding. Could discipline actually be playful?
Back in the 1960s, a Harvard graduate student made a landmark discovery about the nature of human anger.
At age 34, Jean Briggs traveled above the Arctic Circle and lived out on the tundra for 17 months. There were no roads, no heating systems, no grocery stores. Winter temperatures could easily dip below minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Briggs persuaded an Inuit family to âadoptâ her and âtry to keep her alive,â as the anthropologist wrote in 1970.
At the time, many Inuit families lived similar to the way their ancestors had for thousands of years. They built igloos in the winter and tents in the summer. âAnd we ate only what the animals provided, such as fish, seal and caribou,â says Myna Ishulutak, a film producer and language teacher who lived a similar lifestyle as a young girl.
Briggs quickly realized something remarkable was going on in these families: The adults had an extraordinary ability to control their anger.
âThey never acted in anger toward me, although they were angry with me an awful lot,â Briggs told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in an interview.
Across the board, all the moms mention one golden rule: Donât shout or yell at small children.
Traditional Inuit parenting is incredibly nurturing and tender. If you took all the parenting styles around the world and ranked them by their gentleness, the Inuit approach would likely rank near the top. (They even have a special kiss for babies, where you put your nose against the cheek and sniff the skin.)
The culture views scolding â or even speaking to children in an angry voice â as inappropriate, says Lisa Ipeelie, a radio producer and mom who grew up with 12 siblings. âWhen theyâre little, it doesnât help to raise your voice,â she says. âIt will just make your own heart rate go up.â
Even if the child hits you or bites you, thereâs no raising your voice?
âNo,â Ipeelie says with a giggle that seems to emphasize how silly my question is. âWith little kids, you often think theyâre pushing your buttons, but thatâs not whatâs going on. Theyâre upset about something, and you have to figure out what it is.â
Traditionally, the Inuit saw yelling at a small child as demeaning. Itâs as if the adult is having a tantrum; itâs basically stooping to the level of the child, Briggs documented.
Elders I spoke with say intense colonization over the past century is damaging these traditions. And, so, the community is working hard to keep the parenting approach intact.

Trying to explain this concept to white men over the age of 40 Is frighteningly difficult lol
If I was remaking the Princess Bride I'd have Buttercup hire Vizzini, Inigo and Fezzik herself to help her fake her death and take her away so she could go and seek out the Dread Pirate Roberts and get revenge for Westley's death, and also get out of the marriage to Humperdinck, so she rocks up on the ship in disguise and this time Westley doesn't recognise *her*, but she realises it's Westley and she's just making loads of snide remarks trying to figure out why he's been merrily fucking about on a boat this whole time, meanwhile Westley's having a little bit of a bi moment about Buttercup-in-disguise but because he's loyal as fuck he's not going to do anything about it but they get into a fight and Buttercup is like 'Why the hell did you just fucking leave your girlfriend to fuck around being a pirate you could at least have written a letter' and he's like 'Oh I'm sorry???? What on earth would you know about it, this is none of your concern, I should've killed you when you came on board' and of course during this scene they're also having a very tense sword fight with Inigo making quips from the sidelines like a sports commentator, and Buttercup's like 'WELL WHY DON'T YOU JUST KILL ME THEN, FARM BOY???' But then the ship lurches to the side and she gets thrown overboard and Westley is like 'Oh my God I'm so stupid!!!!' So then he has to dive in after and pull her out.
I LOVE THIS??!?
Once sheâs back in the boat she and Westley have a heart a heart conversation and itâs very cute (Inigo and Fezzik are throwing rhyming couplets back and forth in the background).
Humperdinck is still trying to start a war, so when he hears his prospective bride is captured! by pirates! he chases them, and captures them all as soon as their boat makes landfall. Westley, Inigo, Fezzik, and Vizzini all go to the dungeons, and Buttercup is confined to the court physicianâs rooms to ârecover her witsâ from her âscare with the piratesâ (translation: sheâs spitting mad and has a sword now and has to be restrained to keep from Murdering Humperdinck).
The gang in the dungeons are all in separate cells, so they each organize their own jailbreak. Fezzik just. breaks his door, Vizzini confuses his guard into handing him the keys to the door, Inigo has his âFather, guide my swordâ moment and finds a secret passageway out, and Westley is just sitting outside his cell waiting for them, both of his guards knocked out. he claims they turned on each other and then he picked his lock.
Meanwhile, Humperdinck releases Buttercup, which was a mistake, because now she gets to beat him up and give the âto the painâ speech. Inigo has his conclusion with the six-fingered-man, meanwhile Westley finds the queen, convinces her that Humperdinck has been warmongering, and she decides to crown her younger child instead. Westley meets up with Buttercup, and together they find Inigo and Fezzik (who has grabbed the horses).
Inigo becomes the next Dread Pirate Roberts and Fezzik goes with him. Humperdinck never recovers from the scandal and gets shoved in a monastery somewhere out of embarrassment. Westley and Buttercup become wandering swords, just Robin Hooding their way through life, settling down to be farmers in their old age.
You're hired
âWell,â said Inigo, shrugging, âI myself am no stranger to murder plots. I just donât know that the four of us can fight an entire crew of pirates.â
They were drawing quite close to the Revenge, now.
Vizzini scoffed.  âObviously not. They say Roberts is a bloodthirsty pirate, but too honorable for his own good. Our employer will simply challenge him to a duel.â He glanced forward, to the front of the boat, where the enigmatic figure who had purchased their services stared intently ahead, and continued in an undertone. âAnd, since weâve been paid in advance, the outcome matters little.â
