@nicky-olives
we are going to see this. on our tv screens. holy fuck.
This child who came to my house tonight is literally the funniest human being on the planet. She complimented me on having both lollipops and mini Three Musketeers available because "a lot of houses these days don't give you a fruit flavor option." She was very solemn about this.
one argument you often see about fanfiction is that it's like 'training wheels' writing? like 'oh it's fine to do that while you're still learning, it's easier than coming up with your own ideas'. and I have to say I have just never agreed with that.
in my experience it's actually pretty common for newbie fanfiction writers to gravitate towards coming up with OCs rather than writing about the canon characters (hence the infamous Mary Sue); this suggests that many people find that 'easier' than attempting to write about pre-existing characters.
I would say that recreating the characterisation, mood and general vibes of an existing work of fiction is in fact a skill in and of itself that's acquired via practice. A common compliment delivered to fanfiction writers is how well they have captured the spirit of the original work. Inexperienced fanfiction writers fail to do this.
When creating an original character you can, ultimately, say anything about them and now it's canon bcos you created them and you said so. conversely, well, if you are covering a well known song and start playing the wrong notes people will notice immediately.
In addition: a lot of fanfiction, IMO, is in actuality a form of metafictional literary analysis. a story where two characters sit down and talk about their feelings about a canonical event? literary analysis, which is of course a skill. Sometimes fanfiction is bad bcos the writer is not good at interpreting texts.
finally I have made this point before but you never really see anyone suggesting that fictional works based on existing public domain texts are on 'easy mode'. is it 'easier' to write something based on a copyrighted work than a public domain work? Of course it isn't.
I know I said 'finally' but I forgot a point:
A major strength of the transformative work is its ability to create dramatic irony. If a fanfiction's emotional resonance is dependent on being familiar with the source material that's not necessarily a bad thing. sometimes it's a sign that the author has done a really skillful job of engaging with said source material.
ilya accidentally hurts their daughter while playing in yuna and david's house one day, and little hollander-rozanov (we'll refer to her as Baby because she's like, two) ruuuuuuns to shane, crying, telling him what papa did to her. and ilya has trailed after her, is imploring with her to believe he didn't mean to, it was an accident, he loves her so much. but she won't listen to him, refuses to even look at him, and only stops crying when shane picks her up and rocks her from side to side.
he tries telling her the same things ilya did in his calm voice (myshane doesn't use baby voice. he speaks to her normally) and she remains quiet as he talks, but even after he's done she won't look at ilya. eventually experienced mother yuna tells them Baby just needs a little time and takes her away to have a nice hot drink and maybe to do some drawing.
ilya looks CRUSHED. he feels absolutely terrible. shane ends up having to console him too:
"I didn't mean to, shane, the box slipped—"
"I know, baby, of course you didn't mean to."
"I'm a terrible fucking father."
"ilya, no you're not. you're an amazing father and she loves you."
"she has never looked at me like that. ever. like I betrayed her."
anyway, later in the day they're all in the living room together, david in the armchair doing a crossword, shane and ilya on the couch facing the tv, yuna and Baby on the floor playing with building blocks. ilya is only half-paying attention to whatever show is on; he keeps looking over at Baby, pained, and shane keeps stroking his hair comfortingly.
at some point Baby yawns.
"oh? feeling a little sleepy?" yuna asks.
Baby shakes her head. she moves some more blocks. then she yawns again and abruptly decides yes, actually, she's had enough of playtime, and stands up. rubbing her eyes, she turns towards the couch.
shane says, "hey, baby, you wanna go to bed?" and she nods as she walks. but she's walking towards ilya. and ilya is shifting up in his seat faster than lightning, hopeful—and when she stops in front of his knees and reaches up to him his face crumples. he sweeps her up into his arms and holds her close, one hand under her bottom and the other cupping the back of her head. he's murmuring to her in english, "my baby, my baby" and then in russian, "papa loves you so, so much. papa didn't mean to hurt you, baby. I love you so, so much, darling." and she murmurs vague baby things back, face hidden in his neck now and arms circling it.
the scene is so sweet there isn't a dry eye in the room. definitely not ilya's, and not shane's or david's or yuna's either.
maybe just Baby's, though. she's already fallen asleep.
Domestic boys!!
Bonus points if you know the oil they use 👀
you seem avoidant for a girl who’s so hungry to experience the full breadth of human connection
he cries before sex, he cries after sex, but never during sex. during sex he has a fucking job to do
KiKi Layne’s IG Update (2 July 2025)
Source: @kikilayne IG post, 2nd July 2025
@kikilayne: To celebrate the release of #TheOldGuard2 today, here are some throwbacks to 2019 when we were filming the first Old Guard movie.
It's funny to look back on these photos and videos and see how much l've grown. I went right into filming the first movie after completing press for If Beale Street Could Talk and honestly, I was drained and overwhelmed and didn't really understand that I was also struggling with depression; which I wouldn't be able to name until years later. It's weird because the first film was actually a dark and complicated time for me and so reflecting and seeing these moments of joy that I still had means a lot to me.
And waiting this long for the second film to come out has certainly been a test of faith and patience. Trusting that things always happen in God's perfect timing. And learning to have peace with the things that I am actually in control of. Each project teaches me so much about myself and I thank God that no matter the circumstances, I always come out a better version of myself.
So today, I celebrate all that this franchise has taught me and how it has helped me grow as a woman and as an artist. I celebrate that even when this business kicks my ass, that it never takes me under. I celebrate that I am living my dreams and living in my God-given purpose. And I celebrate that I am a whole ass action movie star! I put in a lot of work and sacrifices to get here and I thank God for every opportunity to share my gift and hopefully be a source of inspiration and encouragement to others.
And also, yes, I sometimes snort when I laugh 😂😂
There are ten trillion pictures of flowering trees to the point where they sometimes seem trite and overdone. But then you see a tree in full flower and go holy shit this rules and I've gotta show this to everyone so they can experience the same magic and wonder and there are ten trillion and one pictures of flowering trees
These are Jacarandá trees. Their name means fragrant in Guaraní. They are native to the South Cone of South America, in the lands called Perú, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. Unfortunately, in these picture they do not appear to be in their natural range. That's sad!
Let's take a moment to appreciate those trees in their natural habitats and range:
Me, finishing my cocktail: “Man, I should make that post. Really kick the hornet’s nest.”
Pip: “You should. Drinky post time!”
Me: “It’s gonna make people really mad.”
Pip: “Time to hurt some 🎶feeeeeeeliiiiiings🎵~!”
They gotta stop aging Robin up I swear to god. He’s like fully an adult man half the time and it fucking sucks. Make him recognizably a child or don’t bother including him at all. “But it makes people uncomfortable” yeah dude! Because it is! You’re never going to make it okay so make it interesting! Make it mean something! Like Robin is fully just a grooming story. I don’t mean sexually but it’s a narrative about a man convincing himself that his relationship with a kid is so special and unique that the normal boundaries between child and adult can be suspended, that the child’s circumstances and capabilities and needs are so extraordinary that they are rendered a kind of un-child, and that the scale of their eagerness and want counts as consent. Robin’s already traumatized, so what is there to lose?
Everyone wants Batman to be morally complicated so they make him a huge douchebag for no reason but flinch away from the actual parts of his character that are really troubling. The “is it wrong to have Robin?” question is always brought up and then neatly solved in a way that absolves Batman. But like. One of Batman’s most consistent character traits is that he’s able to convince himself of anything no matter how stupid.
Batman is a hyper-intelligent, hyper-powerful Sherlock Holmes character piloted by the ghost of a lonely child. He’s a genius who uses his intelligence to justify acting upon the emotional impulses of an 8 year old with horrific trauma and unmet needs. He uses children for his own emotional gratification and convinces himself that, while it might not be right, it’s not wrong enough to stop doing it.
And, well, many such cases!
Honestly I think the cognitive dissonance of like a 9 a year old Robin does so much more to establish Bruce as a psychologically complicated and morally gray character than any amount of the pointless assholery people just keep piling on to his personality.
#Batman is a grown man who is so desperate to believe that what he went through as a child was survivable #that he will go through multiple sidekicks the way people go through outdoor cats. #he loves his family so much and he cannot understand that he allows them access to more danger than they ever would have been in otherwise. #he is a metaphor for the positive ways trauma can encourage people to help others #but also for the ways people will project on others and try to live vicariously through them! #batman is trying to exert control over childhood as a concept! he is making child soldiers to prove he could have done more than he did! #and over and over again the universe tries to tell him that he can’t. and so he gets another sidekick. #because surely THIS time the small traumatized child will have the strength and will and power of an adult. #and then Bruce can finally sleep easy knowing if he’d only been a stronger boy he could have saved his parents.
Imo asking if Jason did or didn't push Felipe doesn't matter much because what does matter is Batman didn't trust him and that lack of trust is indirectly what made him seek comfort in finding his biological mother and everything that followed afterwards
a non comprehensive Bipolar Ilya Rozanov symptoms checklist
HYPERSEXUALITY, PROMISCUITY
Jorkin it in front of a practical stranger / cruising for gay sex on the job when you could get deported if ur fired lol
Me: can i add “tornado blowjob” as its own bullet point under hypersexuality?, sibling: … it at least deserves a mention, i think
Let's self harm…. With Sex!
Im not sure where to put jorkin it alone just to piss himself off but it sure does need to go somewhere
openly discusses with therapist that he starting using sex as a distraction from his anger at age 14 in TLJ
RISK TAKING BEHAVIORS
“This is a bad idea.” “what is?” < boy you literally know…
“My coach's son, back in Russia.”
“I like trouble.”
“Weren’t you scared of getting caught?” “not really.”
Saying his room number in front of scott hunter
“Suck my dick” in that dirty ass bathroom really was quite the move after ghosting shane for six months
IMPULSIVITY
Kissing Shane on the roof of NHL awards after initial hostility
Kissing Shane at all stars tbh
again i think the entire bathroom conversation is impulsivity as a symptom like i think he maybe wasn't planning to approach Shane in that way but really truly couldnt help himself
EMOTIONAL INTENSITY
Me: you know…. I am going to put “Spent two full years chasing shanes virgin hole after two hookups” under emotional intensity.
Introduced seven new layers of intimacy and then was shocked when his autistic king ran
ELEVATED MOOD, SUDDEN DROP
First draft pick
After giving Shane his first sloppy style BJ
MHL awards power trip domdrop sex
IRRITABILITY, HOSTILITY, AGGRESSION, OUTBURSTS
he sat there and watched shane give an interview in french with the subtitles off just to piss himself off
“Heres fucking view, check it out! Fuck!”
Lashing out at Shane in sochi
“no i did not answer your boring text, now will you go?”
Deflection and hostility when shane brings up how he ran
Deflection when Shane tries to admit his feelings for Ilya
“Thats not what i asked” “what does it fucking matter?”
“You don't like me”
Physically attacking Alexei when he mocks svetlana
SOCIAL DISINHIBITION
My #partyking
Kissing Shane's cheek on the ice at all stars
GRANDIOSITY
“You're an amazing player to watch.” “Yes.”
“Liar told you that- I said fifty.”
his car collection could definitely count under the overspending and risk taking part of bipolar grandiosity
UNCATERGORIZED MANIC SYMPTOMS (could rly put these multiple spots)
Thinking the way to fix his hostile outburst with Shane is through kissing him, showing Shane that he does like him and there is something there, and not realizing that's not what Shane would take away from that behavior.
MHL Awards me when I’m manic as fuuuuuuck
He is in the torture nexus for the entire all stars conversation
WORTHLESSNESS, GUILT
“Do you even like it there?” “What difference does it make?”
Complete dissociation as Shane leaves the Vegas hotel room, cigarette isn't even lit
“Sorry” when shane notices him crying.
“I want more, Ilya, more more more. And I have nothing for the people.”
“They look at me and see an enemy.”
“It kills me that he took care of our father and I didn't."
“He will never forgive me for any of it. For existing.”
HOPELESSNESS, PESSIMISM
At the club looking at read receipts just to make himself feel bad
He really did just sit there watching Shane's cottage video looking like he was going to kill himself over it
Reading tweets about shane and rose just to piss himself off
“He's terrible. It makes me terrible back.”
LOSS OF INTEREST IN THINGS ONCE ENJOYED
Ilya refusing to sleep with Sasha being both a symptom of depression as well the obvious sign of his growing affection for Shane.
SUICIDALITY
Do I think Ilya would've jumped off that roof? No. unless he couldn't help it, of course
openly discusses that he knows his depression dips into suicidality with Shane in TLJ
SHANES AUTISTIC PERSPECTIVE
Shane clearly confused by Ilya's reaction on the roof at the NHL awards, both at his hostility and immediate shift into risk taking impulsivity
Shane is confused and frustrated by Ilya shutting him out in Sochi, Ilya misreading the situation as to what Shane is there for as he thinks Shane is mirroring his own behavior even though Shane is just trying to reach out and check on him.
“What the fuck do you actually want from me???” Shane is very upset and frustrated with Ilya's complete tone shift from their first time, to Sochi, to the MHL awards.
Shane is happy then immediately looks around to gauge the crowds reaction after ilya kisses him at All Stars in Tampa, overly aware of how risky it is for ilya to have done that
this is for sure not a complete list, im still working my way through the books for a more complete list but like. i can't stress enough this dude is bipolar
