The most mind-blowing moment, not only for De La Mata but the scientists too, came when they managed to actually record the sounds that she heard in her ears – which now appear as ‘Left Ear’ and ‘Right Ear’ which begin sides A and B on the album – and in doing so opened up questions about the nature of tinnitus itself. “The NHS definition is that it’s a phantom sound that your brain is creating, that it isn’t something ‘real’, so you should try to ignore it.” By having De La Mata place her ear into an anechoic chamber, with an ultra-sensitive microphone perched in her ear canal, they were able to provide significant evidence to the contrary. “After the first recording of it, it was ‘There’s no way, this isn’t possible.’” They tried again with her breath held, and again with her tensing her ears, and again with other members of staff, but each time it became apparent that yes, the noises De La Mata hears are seemingly something physical.

I hate the way people categorically say that certain disabilities or types of disabilities are invisible, like autism that often isn't invisible due to things like obvious stimming, disability aids (aac, ear defenders, etc.), or having a carer. People also often say ehlers danlos syndrome isn't a visible disability but a some of the rarer subtypes are visible (like kyphoscoliotic EDS), hEDS is not the only type of EDS and even hEDS and HSD can be visible if someone uses mobility aids, braces, or other medical devices. Psychosocial/mental health disabilities aren't always invisible either, people might have visible self harm scars, a feeding tube, or very obvious symptoms like catatonia or talking to themself.

Disability is a massive spectrum and so is how visible our disabilities are.

You know that tidbit about how "if you want to be a girl/boy, but you don't want to consider yourself transgender or commit to any form of transition because 'I'd make an ugly girl/boy!', then you are already transgender and a girl/boy"? The same is true for non-binary people. If what's stopping you from thinking of yourself as non-binary is a fear that you'll turn out ugly or like a caricature of a non-binary person, or that no-one will ever view you as worthy of love if you're non-binary, you are non-binary and expressing gender dysphoria and imposter syndrome. Just thought I'd let you know.

I do sometimes wonder how many non-binary people there are out there who think they can't be non-binary because that would make them ugly. That they can't be non-binary because they're not [insert insulting stereotype of non-binary people here], and they don't want to be [stereotype], so clearly they must just be a little GNC.

It is oft-repeated that non-binary people don't owe anyone androgyny, but not nearly as often is it repeated that non-binary people don't owe anyone conventional attractiveness. I believe this needs stating because people do not believe non-binary people can be attractive, or anything other than [insert insulting stereotype here], at all. Or, if someone believes we can be attractive, then they often believe we must be perfectly androgynous and near-angelic and viewed as a total bombshell by everyone of all genders all the time. In essence, we are defined out of conventional attractiveness almost entirely, with a small handful of people allowing narrow exceptions to people who are very, very lucky and willing to conform to a specific look. This pairs poorly with the number of people who have been told their whole life that their worth is defined entirely by how beautiful they are and how well they conform to a gender. Of course there are a ton of people who are not willing to give up the thing that everyone values them for, in favour of choosing something that everyone thinks is ugly.

For the record, I think non-binary people are beautiful. Non-binary people need to be told they are beautiful more often, especially those who are told that their choice to transition is a downgrade that will make them ugly and revolting and mutilated and therefore unlovable. But non-binary people are often not conventionally attractive, because the conventions in question are decided by the patriarchal sex-binary, which will always prefer that non-binary people stop being non-binary in any visible way. So this is why I must repeat that non-binary people do not owe anyone attractiveness-- because, in many cases, a prerequisite for conventional attractiveness includes not being non-binary. So non-binary people need to be told that they are worth more than what patriarchal dipshits assume about their character based off of their body. It is more important for you to like your body than for others to like it, and the point of transition is to make you like your body. This is the #1 reason why you should transition.

ok but this unironically works. talk about how the working class is exploited and you can basically sell full-on marxism to your average republican if you do it right. all you have to do is avoid the words "Marx," "capitalism," "socialism," "communism," "means of production," etc - just use synonyms. say "big business" or "corporate shareholder interests" instead of "capitalists." say "a government that prioritizes the needs of the working people" instead of "socialism." it WORKS. I've DONE it. the hardest sell are usually things like social and racial equity, welfare, things like that, because people have been primed with the racist/classist idea that those things are somehow unfair - but you can get your foot in the door to getting them to buy into those too if you start with class issues. read up on your theory, make sure you REALLY understand your own ideology, because that will enable you to reword it and successfully sell it.

In my experience, you can often help sell 'welfare' stuff by appealing to self-interest with a touch of Aren't We Great.

Disability benefits: "I mean, sure, there are probably some sad sacks who are gaming the system, there always are, but hell, with the amount of taxes we pay, the government can afford a few freeloaders, right? I'd rather pay for a couple people who don't really need it than not have the system at all for if I need it, or my kids do, or whatever. I mean shit happens. This has been my main argument against "AI" from the very beginning.

OpenAI scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us.

And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources that they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this.

The World Health Organization report I highly recommend because there are so many conclusions that are shocking and yet completely obvious.

For example, being exposed to corporal punishment as a kid makes it more likely for a person to commit domestic violence against a partner. In places where corporal punishment is normal, people are more likely to think that rape and intimate partner violence are normal. Kids who are spanked are more likely to be violent with and to bully other kids.

Spanking is literally teaching a kid that violence is okay and normal and it affects the whole society.

It also talks about how corporal punishment affects the brain in its development. It changes the structure of the brain and slows the development of mental abilities. Kids who get spanked have much stronger hormonal responses to stress.
