Real thing that changed how i write: I started asking "what does this character think is wrong with them" and separately "what is actually wrong with them." Those two things are almost never the same. She thinks she's too much. She's actually terrified of being too little. He thinks he's bad at commitment. He's actually just never met someone he trusted enough. The gap between their diagnosis of themselves and the real thing, that's your character arc right there. you don't have to explain it. just write both.

We Raise Our Cups really fucks with me. It’s brutally hopeful. It’s a farewell to Orpheus. Sure. everyone knows that. but. its also a call to action.

Hadestown is not subtle in how it shows the power of revolutionaries, of love and hope and human compassion over that of the capitalist cycle of abuse. WRoC is talking about Orpheus. But it is also talking about every person with that revolutionary spirit.

Orpheus is all of us, and every person who stands against exploitation, is Orpheus. The theme is there, but it’s especially strong in Is It True, where he stands against the Fates themselves to challenge the world, only bolstered by the normal people that stood up and heard his words and showed him the power of words.

When Persephone asks where Orpheus is now, it is not entirely that she wonders where the man himself is, but also that she is pouring a drop to every person who holds his legacy and fights for the cause.

Then they praise the birds who sing in the night and the flowers that bloom in snow. A metaphor for those people who fight to make beauty in inhospitable places, who strive for good in darkness.

“To Orpheus, and all of us”

To Orpheus, to those who hold his spirit, to those who lead revolutions, and to those who follow him. The cycle of Orpheus and Eurydice is a love song. It is a tragedy. And yet we all know that one day. one time. they will make it out together. It is on that day, when an Orpheus finally manages to bring their Eurydice back, that the revolution succeeds, and the Shades get to follow their path out of Hades. And the mortals get to live free from the poverty and despair of their oppression.

We sing the song even though it is sad, because we know that spring will come and the world will go back in tune once they make it out together. And Hades can take the seasons, the food from our mouths, the fire from our stoves, every ounce of gold from the rivers, but what he cannot take, nor any other like him, is our songs and the cries of an impassioned heart. And may those songs inspire a thousand Orpheus’ to journey to defeat Hades. Because eventually one will win. It only takes one.

So let the song reach the next Orpheus, wherever they are wandering. Alone on this Earth. And let the song comfort them as they start the cycle again.

I saw the Hadestown pro recording last night and I am vibrating god I love this musical SO MUCH. This is the best of the fanart I made like 7 years ago when it first came to Broadway. I've been so burned out lately but I was so excited after seeing Hadestown again I'm like... MAN I should try to make something cool today.

Saw the Hadestown Proshot in theaters!

Patrick Page did an amazing job, especially considering his left foot was still in a boot from his injury. (Watsonian explanation: Cerberus played a little too rough with him one day.)

I loved getting to see all their facial acting up close

Amber Gray's ability to show grief and pity and fear through her facial expressions alone was amazing

It must be so fun being the trombone player, and the piano player, and the drummer, okay any of the musicians or cast members

I remembered that the fates circle Eurydice a lot but it was neat seeing how they circled Persephone at one point too. Like she too was bound by the fate of having to go back to Hades.

Loved the shot-from-below or shot-from-above shots of people looking down into the middle of the stage or people sinking/rising from the middle of the stage. Incredible sense of space with the filming.

So if you work for Hades, you get a company-issued tube top and leather overalls (with knee pads!) but you don't get goggles immediately? Is there a probationary period?

There's so much symmetry in the stage positions of Hades/Persephone and Orpheus/Eurydice to show the parallels between their relationships!

When Hades sings "doubt comes in" when he's talking about Orpheus' test but you realize he's speaking from experience about the doubts that creep in when Persephone is gone T_T

Loved seeing the audience raise their glasses with the cast members at the end! And seeing the actors clink glasses with people in the first few rows!

My husband kept walking directly behind me when we went to eat after, yelling don't turn around! I half-turned at least three times and fully turned around when I got to the door and he was gone (because he was throwing something away)! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO ME???

I would fail Orpheus' test every time. I'd want to know if my husband was okay but also in the moment if he said something, I'd totally forget the rule and turn.

call me terminally academia-brained but i do think a lot of the fun of character analysis is figuring out how to build a compelling argument for a particular reading using lines of evidence from canon as well as meta/intertextual support

and you could say that what i’m saying here is basically “a lot of the fun of doing character analysis is doing character analysis” but let’s be real a lot of fandom character analysis is pretty heavily vibes-based. and i think that’s where i really chafe up against the traditional thought-terminating fandom attitude of like, everyone’s opinions hold equal weight and any interrogation of that is inherently hostile. because i think it’s fascinating to dig into where others are coming from in terms of their views on characters or dynamics or whatever, especially when they differ significantly from more commonly expressed views, and part of that digging is asking people okay what parts of canon are you drawing from to support your opinion? what parts of canon are you disregarding or downplaying? how does this argument hold up in the light of how race, gender, class, ability, etc. operate both in the piece’s in-fiction and real world contexts?

Seeing the Hadestown proshot was something else entirely. I’ve seen it live several times, but never close enough to really See the actors faces and their emotions. What this proshot does so well is it captures those moments and shows us the other characters reacting to that.

The closeup on Hades during Epic III was phenomenal, Patrick conveys so much with just his facial movements. I’m in awe of that cast. Hades as a whole this time was so interesting to watch. Just all the little things he does during the show that give us the audience a sneak peak inside his head. Then when he realizes that he is similar to Orpheus…. *chefs kiss*

I think more than anything, the proshot really shows how parallel Orpheus and Eurydice are with Hades and Persephone. Both men love their women so much, but can’t show it in the way that matters most to Eurydice/Persephone. Eurydice wants something stable, a roof over her head, food, and warmth. Orpheus gives her the ideas of them, but when push came to shove, he didn’t actually provide. Persephone craves the sunlight and the sky, but Hades is too scared to let her go and recharge. Hades doesn’t see how much his love needs that and acts out of selfishness.

Epic III really shows that parallel between the couples and with the staging of them all on the turntable. Orpheus in the middle, with Eurydice and Persephone on the sides. It’s incredible staging all around.

Also what the proshot does magnificently is convey just how intimate the Lyric theater is. I saw the show on the West End and wow, it’s a much more intimate experience there than it was at the touring productions I’ve seen. The shots they had of the audience really just enforced how much a part of the show they are. Them raising their cups at the end 😭. Nothing beats seeing these shows in person, but it’s incredible what a well made proshot can do. In this case it really elevated the show and added even more layers.
