rolin tryna equivocate the harm between louis and armand and trying to frame louis being cold and mean after the trial as a reason that "made" armand decapitate and torment him again makes the ghost claudia scene even more sinister in hindsight- like it was already steeped in misogynoir and the nonblack writers swerving way outta their lanes, but it explains why rolin thought this scene would function as closure for loustat, that they'd "move on" and specifically instructed sam and jacob to have "well, that happened!!" muted reactions before they started spinning a romantic fantasy. in rolin's mind, an abuse victim who's hateful or mean to their abuser, isn't loving and understanding and gracious with their abuser, is no true victim at all- and claudia in the seance takes it one step further by being hateful, mean and revealing she was a manipulative liar. claudia lying about what lestat said on the train scene isn't framed as the desperation of a survivor tryna motivate louis to help both of their escapes or hoping the threat of harm to her would motivate him in a way direct harm to him didn't, but as claudia gloating about what a gullible fool louis was- the narrative has no compassion for her doing this or for louis for believing her. and that's bc the 3-part intent of this scene is 1- "absolving" lestat of a detail of the train scene with direct verification from claudia bc the writers know in a direct "he said, she said" many viewers would still side with claudia, and they want the black characters' povs to be overwritten by lestat's 2- "humbling" louis with textually antiblack insults as part of this season's extended humiliation ritual for him, 3- giving loustat a reason to move on from grieving claudia now that the audience sees how supposedly hateful and manipulative and angry she is, how she despises both her parents, bc remember rolin thinks abuse survivors who react imperfectly to their abuse have some responsibility in what was done to them. and in this framework, claudia going in harder on louis isn't just about the writers using a black character as a mouthpiece to racially denigrate him- since louis was spiraling deeper in his grief for her than lestat was, claudia needs to be worse to louis to justify him not lingering in his grief for her anymore. rolin wanted to close the book on claudia and the introspective stories about loss and mourning abusive parents who regret failing their daughter ("the failures"?? not this one apparently, she's not even at the long table) that he didn't want to write- and since he's given multiple statements to the effect of "oh that lynching was just 2 lies and louis was a frigid bitch for 77 years so they hurt each other equally" he clearly saw claudia having an "ugly" and hateful reaction to her adoptive parents, esp louis, as his ticket to sever that bond. and an already antiblack scene becomes even more ghoulish when you realize this is how rolin thinks of victims and that claudia not being a perfect victim means her parents are free to shrug and move on. our daughter's trapped in purgatory alone and in constant anguish but baby have you thought about taking an rv out to nevada...

daniel was always abrasive, sort of an asshole, but he was also a good interviewer. i could believe that this character was a successful journalist. if his questions were blunt or crudely put it was because he wanted to catch his interviewee (louis) off-guard, to crack the facade, throw off his rehearsed story. also a nice contrast to louis’s flowery poetic tellings of things, for him to just directly say, “did you eat the baby?” “are you schizophrenic, louis?” but this season it feels like he’s just an edgy politically incorrect asshole all the time for no reason. (plus internet slang buzzwords.) calling louis “louisiana fried chicken,” and armand a “bottom twink,” asking alex “are you autistic?” like are we supposed to be laughing at these lines? because i don’t really think they’re funny. i know there’s more examples from this season but i don’t want to rewatch to find them. i saw a post earlier on, when the season was still in progress, that theorized his repeated hammering of “were you a stutterer as a child?” was not meant to be effective interviewing but really a sign that he was frazzled, out of his depth, not handling his transformation well. before he was pulitzer-prize winning journalist daniel molloy, now he’s an unwilling baby vampire. alas, another example of fans’ filling-in of the blanks being more compelling and interesting than the actual material provided. we don’t really get to delve into how he’s handling his transformation. we don’t even know that much about it, why or how armand did it, and we certainly don’t see it! hmph.
