raffmedici:
Raff lifted a brow at the girl’s question before nodding as she explained, a small smile on her face from understanding. “That’s cool though. And I’m sure it can’t be as hard to relearn as it is to learn. Muscle memory or something” she said mumbling by the end of her own sentence and motioning with one hand to fill in what she was actually trying to say. She shook her head at the question before shrugging “Not really. I tried once or twice. But I don’t think it actually counts if you spend 90% of the time in the water from falling off.” she rolled her eyes a bit joking “one would think I’d have at least balance down but-” she shrugged finishing with a face.
“Muscle memory or something,” Odette echoed pensively, leaning against the car. Her valet cleared his throat, but she was too zoned into Raff and their conversation to notice. “It’s hard! It is hard, standing on a slippery board, being tossed about by the tides. You never know what kind of mood the ocean is in until you’re in it.” She nodded encouragingly, defending Raff’s attempt. “I know when I first started to learn, all I could do was sit on my friend’s board and try to be as small as possible while she maneuvered behind me.”
foxcarmen:
“you’re tellin’ me, sis,” carmen replies, wrinkling her nose a bit. she’d struggled a bit in the beginning, with the attitudes of other people. some of the other cooks had gotten on her nerves - she’d had more than her fair share of disagreements with people. royals with shitty attitudes often had staff with much the same.
“yeah, i mean. that makes sense - they’re neighbours, or whatever,” carmen agrees with a shrug. “can’t say the same for me, though. i don’t think there are many other gay, black-jewish women in japan. but y’know. it’s not so bad.”
carmen hums a little laugh. “don’t worry - i’m not really good at sharin’ the kitchen. i like to cook for people. not with them - i uh, get a little gordon ramsey, honestly.”
Odette liked to think that her modest beginnings made her different from the royals born into their titles; but then, that wasn’t a very humble thought to springboard from. Some of the people swinging about were nasty for the sake of being nasty, though; it was easy to forget she was one of them. “People like that are,” she started, carefully, “way less interesting than they think they are.”
It took Herculean restraint not to blurt out you’re gay? after Carmen’d finished talking. Now more than before, Odette wondered whether this was her odd way of flirting. She was both excited and nervous. “That is a mouthful,” Odette admitted, giggling behind her hand. Still chuckling, she replaced that hand to her chest for dramatic effect, tailored towards what she said next, “Well, shoot. I’m sure we’ll think of something to do.”
kyungwon-rhee:
kyung won took back their phone, looking at all the info she’d put in with mild reverence. if she put this all in, it was because she was serious about staying in contact, and maybe becoming good friends. the thought made them positively giddy. they beamed at her, nodding eagerly. “i would love to! any time! here, i will send you an email so you can have my information, too.” they sent her an email with their own phone number, their room and building number, and even their instagram. “if you need anything, anything at all, please feel free to contact me.”
She fished her phone from her pocket at the same time as it tinged, notifying her of a new message. They stood there together, adding each other to their phones and then stowing them again, watching each other with eager optimism. Odette was thrilled that they seemed to like her enough to hang around her. She saw a lot of light in Kyung won, and maybe her life might have been different if she’d stayed in Korea. Maybe she’d be full of light, too.
Odette rolled forward on the balls of her feet. “I will! If I start to become a nuisance, you’ll tell me? I think you’re my only friend on this island, so I might call on you a lot, if that’s okay.”
raffmedici:
Raff looked quickly back at the girl and nodded “No really- I’m fine there’s no need for all” this she thought motioned around a bit with a small smile on her face “It’s really not your fault” she finished with a small nod. “I don’t want to keep you thought- hopefully you have fun at the beach,” she said taking a step to the side to let the girl through crossing her arms over her chest. She notices the surf boards on top of the girl’s car and points with a curious smile “Going surfing?” She can still see Jorge looking at her from the corner of her eye, but he seems to be mostly keeping his distance leaning against a fence near by mirroring Raff’s crossed arms.
“Ah,” she said, steepling her fingers, “that’s the million dollar question, no?” Odete let the other girl in on the joke by continuing, “I have no idea whether I still can or not. It’s been years since I’ve been in waters brave enough to make waves. And I hear it is not like riding a bike.” She shrugged her shoulders and patted her surfboard affectionately. Upon closer inspection one could note that it was dusty and the pattern on it was outdated and chipped. “Do you surf?”
Birds Of A Feather||Jeremy&Open
royaltyfreethingsicecream:
Slowly Jeremy walked with her. Mostly to not disturb the bird that was sitting peacefully on his shoulder. When she said that she would never forget his name he smiled warmly at her. ‘’And I’ll doubt I’ll ever forget yours.’’ He answered just as friendly. ‘’Well they’re both lovely names,’’ Jeremy said with a smile. He never heard of either but that didn’t mean he didn’t like them. And perhaps because he never heard them before was why he liked them in the first place. Either way it didn’t matter.
“There is a fairy tale with a princess, Odette. She angers a spirit and is cursed to become a wolf at night. She meets the love of her life, but at first kiss, her lover turns into an owl, but turns back into a person when the day ends; so they could never be together. So they team up at dusk and break the curse. I admired Odette’s strength, so I adopted her name,” she explained. Not that he’d asked. She wanted something to fill in the silence as they walked. “I got to pick it myself.”
foxcarmen:
carmen nods a little in agreement, pausing to sip at her coffee a moment, ice clinking in the glass. there was nothing better than some coldbrew and some sunshine, she thought - at least, that’s what she was counting as a blessing today.
“yeah. she’s chill - much better than i expected her to be, honestly. some of these royals are a little stuffy,” she complains, glugging back more coffee before speaking again.
“russia? dope. i’m from japan. guess we both look a little out of place in our homelands, huh?” carmen replies, head cocking to one side. her accent is more american when she’s speaking english, simply because she picked it up from her family. her japanese is unaccented, though - despite not being ethnically japanese, it is the language she grew up speaking.
“yeah? thanks, sis. i may have to hunt you down at some point. might not be any bodies to hide, but we could think of something fun to do.”
Odette smiled and tucked her hair behind an ear. That comment had made her a little anxious. She was royalty now. New royalty, but royalty. But Carmen had said ‘some’, and all signs pointed towards the conversation pivoting to pleasant. Odette was awkward and asked too many questions; but bless her, Carmen didn’t seem to mind.
“Stuffy, yes,” she agreed, leaning against a lamppost a few paces away. “Convinced they are smarter than everyone else. This compound is a joy.” She nodded a little. “There are more Asians in Russia than people think-- but you’re right, they are mostly Chinese. I’m not Chinese.” Odette tilted her head to the side and rolled her shoulders. She didn’t even know Korean; her accent was all Russia. Growing up there was always strange, because what felt normal to her, was totally alien to everyone else.
She thought the conversation was rolling to a close and was about to bid Carmen farewell and continue her walk, but what she said next stopped her; held her awkwardly to that lamppost, floundering for what to say next. “Just so you’re not disappointing later, I should warn you I’m a disaster in a kitchen.”
viggc:
He looked at the marred skin and couldn’t hep but to feel ashamed of his whining. His cheeks tinted red just slightly and he nodded slowly. “Cumbersome enough to make me the most unbearable person on this earth,” he replied. “That’s the silver lining, I’m still hoping that it won’t leave permanent scars.”
It wasn’t her aim to make him reflect on himself. She was really trying to put it in perspective for him. Odette smiled a little and said on an exhale, “well not the most unbearable, I’m sure. You’re scared. We’re all scared; and we need a break from beating ourselves up over what happened at Shanghai.” She paused, her eyes walking along the gashes on his face. “I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.”
kyungwon-rhee:
they blushed. “w-well, you’re forgiven!” so they hoped she wouldn’t bring it up again. they weren’t proud of how badly they’d been startled in front of such a cool person. “y-yes! yes, please.” eagerly, they took out their phone, opening a new contact page and passing it to her. “we can hang out whenever you like. or, if you just, um, i don’t know, need something brought to your room or whatever.” they bounced on the balls of their feet. “i hope it’s sooner rather than later.”
Odette punched her name in and then her email. From a non Russian perspective, it might look like someone dropped all of the scrabble letters at random and slapped an @au.ru at the end. She hesitated, then entered in her phone number as well. And under address, she typed in #507 to indicate that that was her room in the housing building. She handed it back to Kyung won, feeling nervous but excited that they might call on her sometime to send her movies, or better yet, “Maybe we can watch one of your movies together sometime.”
rhiannon & aphrodite
Rhiannon: Have you ever been betrayed?
“I have, but I prefer not to rehash it. It’s far from me now, and would be an unproductive use of my time to ruminate.”
Aphrodite: What do you think of yourself?
“I’m…. decent, I guess? Personally, I think I am boring and ordinary looking without my red hair. I don’t think I’ve seen most things that other people have, and it’s hard to connect, so I end up awkwardly on the outside of everything. I think everything good in me went away when the princess died.”
odin, morrigan, and ra
Ra: Do you have any major responsibilities or importance?
“I… honestly do not know. After the princess passed and I was added to the family, it’s mostly been impressive titles and sending me off to retreats. I’m not a princess by blood and my country feels no obligation to know me since I’m never there… I wonder what that does to my standing, but. It isn’t really my place to ask.”
Morrigan: What do you think happens when we die?
“I used to believe in God, but then, what God would allow generations of people to suffer for one person’s mistake? What God would starve a mother from her child? I used to believe in heaven, but I think we are just placed in a fancy box and left to rot in the ground when we die.”
Odin: What is your family like?
“My mother was a wanderer, now passed. A wonderful woman, from what I remember. I never met my father, but I believe he was a Russian man. My new family, the monarchs and their son and daughter, are far greater than I deserve. My adoptive parents are generous and worried always, and my adoptive brother is kind of a tool, but he means well. The daughter, died a few years ago in an accident, but I still think of her often. Nearly every day, in fact.”

raffmedici:
Raff couldn’t say she was paying much attention to anything. She had tried to go for a walk that morning just to find that nature was also too dangerous for her to see on her own and so was being followed by a man about twice her size. Jorge was one of the four people her mother had assigned to watch Raff’s every move while she was on the island. Having been constantly looking over her shoulder the man’s eyes on her back making her feel completely paranoid even though she knew he was there, wasn’t helping with attention either.
That’s probably why, when she finally faced forward a girl had shown up out of nowhere and there were no quick reflexes, not that she had many of those anymore, that would have saved her from running right until the girl. Even though the girl wasn’t that much taller than her the impact and the quick step back she took while trying to avoid the collision sent Raff straight to the floor. She looked over her shoulder once more at Jorge who hadn’t even moved a muscle and rolled her eyes mumbling to herself “grazie per l'aiuto” before getting up and shaking her head at the apology with a half smile “Don’t - it was my fault too I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
Odette yelped when the stranger fell to the floor and fussed over her immediately. She yanked her to her feet as gently as her nerves would permit and shook her head hurriedly. “I’m so sorry,” she said again. And again. And again, for good measure. “Neither was I! I was so excited to go to the beach, you see, and-- that is no excuse, I shouldn’t have been rushing like that. Are you okay?” Belatedly, Odette realized Raff was barely paying attention. In fact, she seemed more interested in something behind her. Odette scanned the area, but since she didn’t know what, or who she was looking for, she saw nothing out of the ordinary. After her hiccup of uncertainty, she went back to fretting, giving Raff room to breathe and continuing her sleuth of apologies.

Jeremy smiled at her when she let out a giggle. “That’s good to hear.” He replied happily. Perhaps if life had handed him different cards he could’ve become a singer. But he doubted that with his current position that it would be a good idea. While he wasn’t the first in line to the throne, and he was glad he wasn’t, he wasn’t sure that his parents would approve of it.
“Oh excuse me for my manners, ma'am. My name is Jeremy van Oranje-Nassau. It’s nice to meet you.” He said as he stretched out his arm for a handshake.
She bit her lip and walked around him, beckoning so that they might finish their leisurely stroll together. Without even knowing it, they had a lot in common. She would never sit on the grand royal throne in Lithuania, but with how she had come to be a part of that family, many things were impossible to her now. Odette never complained, for she truly got better than she deserved. “That’s quite the name. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it,” she said warmly. “I am Dae Oh, but my friends and-- pretty much everyone-- calls me Odette. Nice to meet you.”
foxcarmen:
“that’s what my mama said too,” carmen jokes, mouth curling. she watches the woman a few moments head cocked slightly to one side. she no longer had a head of long hair to hide all her looks behind, so she knew she was probably being a little obvious in her examinations.
“clarissa,” carmen answers, realizing belatedly that she probably came off as a little disrespectful addressing her employer without titles. “uh, the queen of france. or whatever. she’s cool.”
she nods. “you’re very welcome. any time.”
The way Carmen was looking her over was almost redolent, and Odette didn’t know whether or not to feel flattered or self conscious. She settled for both and shuffled awkwardly where she stood. “I know the woman, she is kind, you’re right,” She looked up at the sky and walked down the short leap of steps, which lead into a concrete walkway coming away from the building and into the garden.
She wondered if it would be considered lying to not tell this stranger where she hailed from. Carmen hadn’t asked, and Odette always felt awkward sharing. “If you couldn’t grab it from my accent, I’m from Russia,” she said, which wasn’t technically a lie. She wanted to say something clever, cool, and impressive, but couldn’t summon anything but, “And if you ever need an alibi or someone to help hide a body, I’m on the fourth floor.”
kyungwon-rhee:
kyung won chuckled, looking smug (or as smug as they could look.) “we’ll see who’s saying i told you so.” that was probably a long ways off. they made these sort of plans with friends or strangers all the time. conflicting schedules and the limitations of their environments made most plans mere fantasies. kyung won didn’t even know if there was a karaoke parlor here. “thanks for helping me, by the way.”
Odette giggled in response to their jab, and shrugged. “Least I could do for scaring you. You looked as white as the sheets when you saw me!” The last of them were off the line and neatly folded in the basket Kyung won had set out. She wanted to say ‘what’s next?’ but she didn’t want to presume they’d want her hanging around still. “Until we meet again? Maybe, um,” she started fiddling with her hands restlessly, “maybe I will watch those movies. Do you need my email?”
kyungwon-rhee:
kyung won stood with her, feeling extremely vulnerable. for them, this was a huge step. if someone had asked them an hour before if they thought their friendship was ready for this talk, they would have said no. but, bless her heart, she took their hand and smiled. they smiled. “alright.”
Odette thought about what Kyung won meant. She told her valet they were waiting for a few more minutes, and she crawled onto the hood of the car to sit and relax in the sun for a moment. She had no idea how big that news was because she didn’t yet totally grasp the gravity of it, but she couldn’t wait to talk to them more. Her lonely trip to the beach had turned into something to be even more excited about.
