Games I Played In 2026 And Whether Or Not I Thought They Were Good (1/?)

(2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025)

Listen! I play a lot of videogames! And I have a lot of opinions on videogames! If you're following me, you're just gonna have to live with that. Every year I gab about all the stuff I've played, and confer information upon you pursuant to the title of this post.

You may notice that 2026 is not over yet! I find that when I do my big end-of-year reviews posts, I tend to have trouble remembering all the stuff I wanted to say about games I played earlier in the year, when they're less fresh in my mind. So I'm gonna try doing these bad boys biannually, instead.

Lil Gator Game

This thing? This thing is adorable. It's this little open-world collectathon about little kids pretending to go on a Zelda-style fantasy adventure, sort of a Breath of the Wild meets A Short Hike meets Craig of the Creek situation. It's funny and oozes charm out of every pore- but it's also just a blast to play.

Lil Gator Game just keeps giving you movement options, is the thing. The devs were like "Huh, yeah, it would be fun if the player could surf on their shield to build up speed. I'll put that in. And how about a special shield that lets you bounce around? Or an item that lets you ragdoll at will to make your physics go wacky? Or a balloon that lets you float into the air? Or a sticky hand to swing from? Yes, all of that, why not?"

It's chock full of toys, is the thing. Everything you do rewards you with a new toy to play with, and while some are clearly better and more efficient than others, they all feel great to use. It's especially fun in the DLC, which takes place in a big cave system, and which turns all the weapons into movement options too. And gives you PS2 Spiderman powers too because why not? It's just joyful all the time. It's easy as hell because of all the busted tools they give you, but like, it's never the kind of easy that's not fun. This is a game you can give to a small child and they'll be able to beat it, which is I'm pretty sure the intention.

Oh and it's got this really heartwarming story about sibling connection and growing up and the generation gap that made me cry too. That is also a thing. It kinda works on every level.

Super Auto Pets

Meet the new thing that's been devouring my time. It's an autobattler, wherein you manage a team of little guys with different stats and abilities, and they line up in front of another team of little guys and deterministically smack each other until only one is left standing. You don't control the battles, but you do control your build, at least as long as the random-rolled shop pets and buff foods are cooperating.

And it's just real good. It's "I have 100%'d the game" good, and then I kept playing after 100%ing it and 100%'d it again on hard mode. It's this deviously calibrated mix of chance and strategy that gets its hooks in your brain and feels rewarding to play every time. I've gotten kind of obsessed and even uhhhh maybe done a project related to it that will be revealed Eventually, when the fates permit.

My biggest nitpick is the progression system. There's hundreds of pets in this game and the only real progression is collecting ribbons for your pets. You get a ribbon if you beat a run with that pet on your team at level 3. You level a pet up by buying copies of it in the shop and merging them together, and the shop is randomized between rounds and when you pay a gold to reroll it. And, notably, if you win ten rounds you win the run and it's over. So you can't just do well- you have to do well slowly, shooting for ties and throwing games to buy time for enough copies of the motherfucker you're trying to ribbon to randomly show up in the shop. It makes winning into a lose condition!

In fact, when I said I 100%'d it on hard mode- that was actually way easier than the base game, because to get a hard mode ribbon you only need a level 2 pet at the end. This requires half as many copies to spawn, so it's almost never an issue- you can just focus on making your build good and trying to win. Nothing hard mode throws at you is harder to deal with than "winning is actually a lose condition for the thing you care about", so it took like a third of the time it took to beat it normally.

Monster Train 2: Destiny of the Railforged

This was the old thing that was devouring my time. I reviewed it last year. They did a DLC for it. It adds two new factions (okay, one new faction and the DLC faction from the previous game) and also a whole new game mode that's pretty fun and opens up some really busted interactions. I spent another 200 hours on it. That Is Too Many. I will not say anything else about it. The game is very good and you Should Not Play It. I have declined to include a link because you Should Not Play It.

Grounded 2

The original Grounded was this really cool open world survival crafting game whose premise was "hey, do you remember Honey I Shrunk The Kids? we do!" and it turned out that premise was enough to carry the entire game even though I felt like a lot of its survival crafting mechanics were frustrating and underbaked. It's just an incredibly fun setting to explore, in how it turns familiar things into larger-than-life videogame obstacles just by shrinking you down.

Grounded 2 iterates on this formula by...

...uh...

...okay, it doesn't. Like at all. They just copy-pasted every single mechanic, item, and enemy from the first game completely unchanged into a new map. The one big new thing is "Buggies", i.e. a mounts system that admittedly is pretty fun but doesn't meaningfully change the core gameplay loop. The exact same frustrating thirst mechanic that requires you to scramble for dewdrops every morning is back, the exact same kinda janky building system that's overreliant on materials that only spawn in one particular area of the map such that base-building in remote locations is functionally impossible is back, the repetitive resource-hogging gear grinding system is back, the giant HP sponge raid bosses are back... they had a chance to revisit and refine these mechanics and then just didn't.

(Except the dandelion thing. Now you automatically use dandelion tufts from anywhere in your inventory so that the accessory slot is usable for anything else at all ever, rather than being reserved for the single most important mechanic in the game which is Not Dying When You Fall Off A Huge Thing, which you need all the time.)

(...my accessory slot is still reserved for the trinket that makes dandelions never run out of durability. Womp womp.)

It is currently in Early Access- but my group is through all the content so far, and their roadmap doesn't look too encouraging. Next content update is going to be the water area! And yes: it's going to be the exact same water area with the exact same giant unkillable monster koi that punishes you for engaging with the water mechanics! Hooray!

Chants of Senaar

This game is so goddamn cool.

So- you're some hooded whosit. You don't know why you're here or what you're doing, but it kinda seems like it's a good idea to get to the top of this here big tower. You wander around and run into... people!

And you don't speak their language. Whoops.

So alright. You gotta learn their language! You have a notebook where you write down the various glyphs of their language and what they mean, and you eavesdrop on people and compare what they're saying in different contexts, and you figure out that this squiggly shape means this concept, and that squiggly shape means that concept! And you figure out how they're put together, and how the grammar works, until you can read the language and understand what you're supposed to be doing to progress!

Then you get higher in the tower and you meet new people. Who speak a new language. And you have to start all over again. And then start translating between them, to overcome language barriers between characters and understand these elaborate factional conflicts and weird fantasy societies.

This game is so goddamn cool. If you liked Tunic and/or Heaven's Vault, this is a must-play.

(If I have a nitpick: I would say the final area was a little underbaked. It had this really cool glyph-compositing system that I bet would've been so interesting to figure out organically and wrestle with the ambiguity of, but they kinda speed you through it with a bunch of cheat sheets.)

(If I have a second nitpick it's that I hate stealth segments and they keep doing stealth segments to break up the translation gameplay. They're not bad stealth segments but I didn't even want the translation gameplay broken up because it was cool.)

Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane

A few years back, there was an Indiegogo for a wizard-based murder mystery game that was about to fall short of its goal. I dropped a thousand dollars on it to get it over the line, because for mysterious reasons I have an interest in wizard murder mystery games existing. It got made, and then I didn't get around to playing it for a few years because I was busy with other stuff.

It turned out to be really really good actually.

I will say it didn't make a strong first impression- the game is fully ripping off every single thing from Ace Attorney. Like, down to the menus and navigation and stuff. The courtroom is laid out the same, they have OBJECTION! voice lines, there's a hardscrabble police guy who gives the first testimony in most cases working for a hoity-toity prosecutor with a heart of gold, you got someone who can read combinations of four different color-coded emotions from people, you got a Mia, you got a Maya, you got parts where you have to submit the photo of the banana instead of the banana- it's all extremely by the numbers in the first case. Kinda felt asleep at the wheel at first.

But there's worse models to rip off! It had pretty strong mystery fundamentals and intrigued me enough to keep going. And I gotta say, it paid off. Once it takes the Ace Attorney training wheels off and starts doing its own thing, it's pretty fascinating. The fantasy worldbuilding has a lot of interesting details going on, and the way they're woven into the cases is really pretty clever a lot of the time. They do some really smart stuff with the magic system to keep it legible for a murder mystery, and it all works pretty well.

And it keeps ramping up! Every successive case is better than the last one! Things get more and more complex, you get some really cool and scary antagonists, and it all culminates in a finale that really uses all the little details it set up to incredible effect. There's even an Umineko red truth duel in it!

(I think I experienced the version of the story that benefited from extensive editing- there were a couple cases in the middle where I had to look up a walkthrough a couple times, and found a walkthrough for a completely rewritten old version of the case instead. I think case 3 especially suffers a little bit from, like, a ton of little details being irrelevant because they got written out in the second pass. It's the chapter-based mystery games curse......)

Last Train Outta' Wormtown

This one's just fun. It's an asymmetrical multiplayer co-op/PVP the-floor-is-lava game, where a bunch of cowboys pardners are trying to repair and prepare a train to escape a ruined town by running around the map completing various objectives.

However, there is a worm. One player is a giant Dune-style sandworm that wants to eat all the pardners. The catch? They can't see. Their vision is based on sound, and they can only see you when you're walking without rhythm on the sand. So you've got to scramble around the map repairing tracks and getting fuel and whatnot without touching the ground- something the map design doesn't allow you to always do. You've got to coordinate with your pardners to distract, mislead, and escape the worm as you do all this stuff, and it's just a really great time. Here's a fun video where you can see it in action.

Only real problem is... the game's kinda dead. Really hard to find a public lobby, so you've got to have a friend group to play it with. I've been lucky since Jello's been playing it whenever he gets a chance and I've wormed my way into his usual playgroup, but you'll have to find like, five or so other people to play it with. (Luckily, only one person needs to own the game to host, and everyone else can play for free.)

Gonna do another batch of these soon, and then do the rest at the end of the year.

Last week, the Trump administration quietly released a sweeping new federal rule that would use funding threats to force institutions across the country to reject transgender people. The 400-page proposed regulation would codify the administration's anti-trans executive orders into binding federal policy, imposing a blanket prohibition on federal funds going toward "gender ideology"

The proposed rule, formally titled "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance," rewrites the government-wide framework governing all federal grants across every agency. Among its most consequential provisions, it requires that before a federal grant recipient can receive money, the award must pass a "pre-issuance review" conducted by a political appointee—not a career expert or peer reviewer—to ensure it is "consistent with applicable law, Federal agency priorities, and the national interest." The regulation explicitly instructs these appointees to screen for "denial by the recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic." [...] An institution that acknowledges transgender people exist—through its policies, its training, its healthcare, its bathroom access, its HR procedures, its name-change processes—could be deemed to "deny the sex binary" or to “support the notion that sex is mutable” and have its federal funding blocked.

Importantly, the gender ideology prohibition has no age limitation—hospitals could be targeted not just for providing care to minors but for providing gender-affirming care to adults, because prescribing hormone therapy to a transgender patient of any age could be deemed promoting the belief that "sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic."

This is all very bad and horrible, but I want to be clear that it’s worse and more sweeping than just eliminating trans research.

This torches everything. And I do mean everything.

A very abbreviated list of its ramifications include (but are not limited to):

ending funding for ALL DEI related initiatives

allowing the government to terminate grants at any point for any reason

preventing researchers from publishing, going to conferences, and being part of academic societies

requiring that topics must support the president’s agenda.

What this means, and if anything I’m under selling it, is the death of science and research in America. It allows the government to restrict any topic they please at a whims notice, putting officials who have no background in the topic in charge of deciding funding continuity. It controls what gets researched and if/how researchers are allowed to share their discoveries. There are no books to burn if the government never allows them to be written. This is fascism plain and simple.

Please, if you only ever write one public comment, this is the one to do.

Bringing back this guide to writing an effective public comment. This gives you the basics you need to know, what you need to include, a basic outline you can follow, etc.

Public comments are not a vote, it is a chance for you to say "here is an issue with this law I think you need to address" and provide justification for legal challenges if it goes forward:

"Comments raise the bar that agencies have to meet when making a rule; “if an agency fails to adequately respond to significant, relevant comments in a final rule, members of the public may seek to challenge the rule in court on that basis and claim it could be struck down.ˮ"

But also, if possible, don't stop at writing a comment. Don't stop at calling your representatives. You should ideally be talking to people in your community about this and organizing resistance on-the-ground; there is a good chance people are already doing that even if you aren't hearing about it.

Some added 101-level context from someone (me) who’s worked in federal grantmaking for 20 years and is literally certified on this document - this is a document that governs all federal grantmaking. It’s been around for over a decade and is a mega-document that combine multiple previous smaller documents that have been around for ages. It is updated every few years and generally the updates are minor - a notable change in the previous update was raising the small procurement threshold from $10,000 to $15,000 for example. Deeply dry boring minutiae that no one outside of federal grantmakers need concern themselves with. It was also federal GUIDELINES, which means there was flexibility.

This year’s is different. They are now federal REQUIREMENTS, which means there’s no flexibility. As was said previously, the 400 pages are not singularly devoted to being absolute shitheads to trans people. Theres a lot of stuff in there, some of which is the standard dry boring grants stuff, some of which is the horrible ideological warfare outlined above.

This document is issued by the OMB, the Office of Management and Budget, which is currently lead by fucking Russell Vought, the principal architect of Project 2025. This is how they’re going to implement all the horrible shit in there that wasn’t covered by Executive Order. Russell Vought is actively coming for my job, my marriage, and my kid, and most of my friends lost their jobs last year because of him. He is the fucking arch villain behind the heinous shit the current regime is doing.

So yes, please comment. You don’t have to read all 400 pages before doing so, it’s dry and dense as fuck, but I thought this information might be helpful. Also, while there is a public comment period, this isn’t voted on by Congress. The OMB just fucking issues it. Pressuring your elected officials into publicly saying “hey what the fuck are you doing here” is good, though.

(This post contains spoilers for the ending of An Observation Log of a Self-Proclaimed Villainess)

I'm absolutely in love with the anime adaptation of this story, and the ED really sold it.

This story comes off as a really silly and therefore shallow and brainless story -- and technically it really is, it's not complicated and you're not supposed to have to wrack your brains reading it -- but honestly I think this story has one of the best and strongest writing in this genre. Its themes and premises are consistent from start to end: Cecil's intelligence, overcompetence and apathy; the comedic tone of the whole story; Bertia's earnestness. There is nothing contrived about the plots' developments because it was all there from the start. Cecil was always an apathetic sociopath and we are consistently told that from the very start. There was always a very real possibility of him being a monster. (And really, he was one, just one that chooses not to act like it.) The characters' motivations all made sense because the foundations were all laid from their very first introduction.

And back to the ED -- the ED makes it abundantly clear that the staff adapting this story are very clear about the circular way in which each character fits into another. They really do grasp Cecil's entire character development in that one ED.

The way Bertia entered his cold, emotionless world and painted it with vibrant colours.

The way Cecil was captivated by Bertia and centred his world around her.

The way Bertia's colours dyed him so thoroughly that the cold, dark colours of his own world has now turned into a whole other colour, a whole new undertone. (Seriously, go back to the first screenshot - the scene with Cecil by himself has cool undertones, but every scene afterwards has warm undertones. How crazy is that? The staff really used every trick they could to convey everything they could.)

And of course the beautiful vocals that convey the fact that this whole story is really about Cecil's slow burn love and yearning. It's so soft and gentle and filled with bone-deep longing.

I love this story so much because the writing is so strong that the rewatch value is insane. It's so nice watching Cecil's slow descent into love and realising just how important and all-encompassing it is. It's so nice appreciating in hindsight how genuinely sociopathic Cecil was and how right Bertia was to worry about it -- and also how beautiful it is that things worked out. Because Bertia loved Cecil and everyone in the world so dearly that she captured Cecil's attention, and then love. And because Cecil loved Bertia so much, that he changed so much for her -- both consciously as he manipulated the world around him, and unconsciously as he himself changed.

This story is so, so narratively satisfying. And the ED really brought out all the narrative elements of it that may not have been so clear on the first read, when we (and Cecil) didn't know how much he quietly loved Bertia and how important and groundbreaking that truly was.

Simon being so hard headed that he refuses to let Baz pay for a single thing on their first date, despite knowing that Baz can easily pay for the whole date. Despite Baz showing up in designer. Despite the fact that Simon can barely afford groceries most weeks.

He refuses to accept Baz’s offer to pay because he’s weird like that. He hates feeling like he’s in debt. All his life he’s felt like he owes everyone something. Owes the whole world for his mere existence. A debt he could never repay, a bar he could never live up to. So he controls it where he can.

Growing up in care homes where the had nothing to his name really taught him to keep everything to close to his chest, both emotionally and literally. As an adult he has to restrain himself from the habit of stockpiling food—the compulsion to hoard anything he may need—because what if it all goes to shit again? What if he ends up with nothing and no way out?

It takes him years to heal from those rough days. It’s months before he’ll even let Baz buy him a coffee, let alone a gift. But Baz takes it as it is, he won’t push Simon’s boundaries unless Simon lets him. But one day Baz will spoil Simon with all he’s got. Show him how much worth he really has, and not just with material things.

Spoil him with love, too.

Kemutai Hanashi has been my favourite aroace narrative I've ever encountered. The way it's written and how the two main characters experiences are shown is beautiful and really captures some of the many experiences someone who is on the aroace spectrum or those who are aroace-spec may go through. And it's not a suttle part of the story, their struggles are intertwined in the narrative, having the main characters have introspective moments and trying to grow as individuals and as a duo in a society that is forceful in labeling and exposing your private life. It's also mixed in with slice of life moments that are still effected by their struggles of being aroace. A perfect way of showing without only telling. It has made me cry multiple times because I feel seen and represented properly.

I highly recommend the manga to anyone who wants to read a aroace experience or someone who's on the spectrum who wants some good representation for once. It's still on going and I hope it continues to be as amazingly written as it has been.

I also think it's important to mention that as a trans girl, I see a lot of other white trans girls appropriating asian culture because they associate it with femininity, which genuinely pmo as a wasian girl (i am more white than asian and am very white passing, so I can't fully provide input on this). This definitely ties into the larger point of the video, bcs I have not seen other people call out these issues and they are usually ignored, and when they are brought up people are just blatantly ignorant ("if i can't see it it doesn't exist"). even i don't feel like I've noticed the issue this person is talking about, but I am not in transmasc spaces so of course I wouldn't see it. I saw a very useful video about this similar phenomenon even in cis white people. They said in the video white men emulate black men because they think it's more "masculine," and and white women emulate east asian women because they perceive them as "more feminine/cute/etc."

This ALSO ties into white trans men and nonbinary emulating east asian men because they perceive east asian maleness as a "more feminine" version of masculinity and therefore "more achievable/idealized."

i have my own gripes with this in regards to how other white trans men fetishize east asian men and how they might write erotic RPF or fanart, which in a vacuum might be whatever, but there's this undercurrent of "being east asian (or appearing east asian) is an automatic pass for me to fetishize you and make objectifying comments about you" which i personally have experienced firsthand and. aaauuuughghhhh i wish ppl would be more Aware of how their tastes in RPF or whatever (fantasies about celebrities who might never see it) affects how they interact with REAL PEOPLE they might actually talk to FACE-TO-FACE??? especially when it's rooted in racism like this

And never before in my life or in posting videos about trans discourse have I gotten so many comments from people acting completely oblivious or confused to the issue, even though the issue is a very simple statement.

I think this reflects the fact that a lot of white queer people are just incapable of thinking about issues if it is not personally affecting them. And I think this reveals a weaponized incompetence issue in the larger white queer community when it comes to racial issues. When someone brings attention to intercommunal issues not about race, I never get these comments. I never get comments acting confused or acting like what I’m talking about is so incomprehensible, or saying things like “Well, I’ve never seen this happen” because people accept maybe this has happened, just not to me.

But the second someone brings up a racial issue, suddenly it’s incredibly confusing and complex and people need to explain to them five (5) million different ways before they get it. And obviously other people call bullshit to this and they say this is very clearly you just refusing to understand this, not you being unable to understand. And a lot of people in the comments seem to be resorting to the fact that they’re neurodivergent to excuse the fact that they’re not aware of racial dynamics in the queer community, And I think this is a larger problem.

People like to flee back to marginalised entity and talk about how they’re queer or they’re neurodivergent in order to get away from complex critiques about the way that they ignore racism in their own community.

There are two possibilities. Either 1: These people are aware of this issue and are pretending not to know about it because it allows them to escape accountability, or 2: They’re just genuinely not aware of it. But both of these reveal a problem because it means that white queer people either do not notice or do not care about the racism happening in their own community, because the problem identified is not a niche issue, it happens all the time.

But the refusal to use critical thinking or even just look in the comments for other explanations before jumping to act confused and acting ignorant of the issue is a bigger problem that white queer people need to examine in themselves. Remaining ignorant on issues of race and acting like you’ve never seen this happen or you’ve never heard this before is a result of you ignoring it, not as a result of it not happening.

The fact that tons of people in the comments who are Black queer people are saying this happens all the time but white queer people are saying they’ve never seen it happen suggests that it’s not that it doesn’t happen, but that white queer people don’t recognize it happening because they don’t actually pay attention to racial issues in their community, which is why when it gets called out, they act so confused about it." /End of transcript.

A short list of things I think everyone should try or do at least once in their life that will make you feel more alive. Not all of these are applicable to every person, but it’s a summary:

Take a dance class of any style with a semi-serious instructor for at least 4 classes worth

Write a work of fiction, of *any* length and *any* quality

Learn a least a bit of a language that isn’t your native one. You don’t need to become anywhere near fluent, but try and get a bit beyond yes, no, and where’s the bathroom. If you’re from a country where most people are bilingual already, that doesn’t count! Get bits of a language with which you are truly unfamiliar.

In the same vein, make peace with subtitles and start consuming music, TV and movies from cultures that aren’t your own. If your country imports large amounts of media from a specific other culture or cultures (American movies in foreign markets, for example) that also doesn’t count! Get some feelers out to begin to take in content from a culture that you don’t already have a lot of knowledge of.

Try at least one less common/less “exercisey” and more fun type of physical exercise such as roller blading or roller or ice skating, gymnastics, trampoline, rock climbing, aerial silks, pole dancing, surfing, etc

Learn a hobby or craft that produces a physical finished product and produce a single, complete object - regardless of quality - that you can hold in your hands and say that you made.

Look up a how it’s made video or YouTube video on how an item that’s interesting or relevant to you is made

Give one type of thing - media, hobby, sport, whatever - that you’ve never been interested in or never tried because of some preconceived perception an honest shot and see if your perception was correct. Sometimes it won’t be, sometimes it will be, but it’s valuable to know.

Rearrange the furniture in a room in your home

It’s about NOVELTY, babey! Get some enrichment into your enclosure!
