before there was Online there was lying on the floor and studying the patterns of the carpet and tracing it with your finger
I worry a little bit that people who refuse to learn about ai as a part of their anti ai position are going to be extremely unprepared to understand whatβs actually scary about it and already have their digital literacy at risk tbh
not that I am some genius in this regard but if you follow ai developments even slightly you might change the things you are most worried about. do people know the extent to which ai is already eating itself and how meaningless this is making swaths of the internet. do people know that there are plenty of random mid-sized companies today buying their employeesβ likenesses to create digital clones and using these to make hundreds of videos. I am so much more worried about labor and surveillance and abuse than people becoming lazy about writing emails. and idk man I sort of like and respect people who are willfully ignorant about it as a way of minimizing its force in their lives and I am in some ways jealous but also when I see posts that basically still boil down to βchatgpt will never fool meβ I am like πππ for one thing not the only thing to be concerned about, for another thing I am really sorry but I donβt think youβre right
the anniversary of library paste manβs death is in four days.
One hundred and ten years ago to the day. Amazing. Incredible.
RIPππππ―
it's kind of incredible when people who lived through the birth of OSHA and EPA, along with the regulation of the automotive and tobacco industries, are like, "You're a luddite if you want to regulate the computer or have concerns about it as a consumer product, it's not a consumer product but more like a minor deity or something, anyway whatever it is it can't possibly be regulated, you have to just let the end of civilization wash over you"
You're a hopeless luddite if you don't want your children to fly through the windshield when you brake too hard. You're a hopeless luddite if you don't want your child's brain destroyed by constant exposure to an addictive product and the industry you work in to be opportunistically destroyed by 20 years of blatant and constant theft, despite the fact that an act of congress or scotus could have stopped all of this at any time
Movement nudge, hand mobility! π

1) do this even if you're under 40. seriously. I definitely should have been doing something like this for years and I only turned 40 a month and a half ago
2) if you're like me just now trying this going "oh god i've only done 15 and i think my hands are cramping" start lower than 30 and increase by 5 once whatever number you're doing no longer makes your hand cramp up. I can manage about 15 per exercise at the moment.
If you're hypermobile, be especially gentle.

fantastic. i love it. i posted this after my wife said it yesterday and as i was doing it i was like "this can't be an original thought. as soon as i hit post someone's going to say 'you stole this from a tweet from 2014' and i'll say 'no, i stole it from my beautiful wife.'"

You can replace [ACTIVITY YOU ENJOY] with [SCROLLING] but watch out. This sucks bad π
Some things about this post since getting quite a few notes:
1. If you see this post, highly recommend taking it as an opportunity to set a timer for 15 minutes and switch over to ACTIVITY YOU ENJOY. if after those 15 minutes, you want to go back to scrolling, that's okay!
2. Huge shout out to this popping up in my notifs often, bc I do go back to activity.
3. I think there are times where scrolling is fine. Right now, for example, I'm being connected to a machine for two hours to donate plasma and platelets. Yes this is a brag but it is also a time where scrolling is one of the few things I can do. (Though I will probably also read or watch something on phone lol)

Biggest fuck-up ever is that people have to pay to become doctors
Like unironically we should be subsidising at least 50% of their educations. What do you mean we have a shortage of doctors we should have surplus. What do you mean theyβre being overworked they should be treated like royalty, they can fix human bodies
I donβt care if some of them are only doing it for the money. I donβt care if all of them are only doing it for the money. Intentions donβt matter to the stitches in my nanaβs leg or the ten billion other lifesaving treatments we all get at a detriment to their finances and mental wellbeing. Entire cities are kept alive by just a couple thousand of them what are we DOINGGGGG
If we had more, maybe it would be easier to get the shitty ones fucking replaced. The board isn't going to do much to the only endocrinologist in the state who takes Medicaid, you know? But if there were more than, idk, maybe 5? Maybe then?
More importantly if you needed less money and less physical stamina to become a doctor, people with less money and less physical stamina could become doctors, which would increase diversity and improve patient care.
Overlock Stitch by @clothes_reetzy
Damn, that's useful
Finally a hand sewing tutorial on a hemline that isn't just the ladder stitch! the ladder stitch disappears when you tighten it, but it's not meant for hemlines because it breaks really easily! The overlock stitch is more stable, so it holds much longer, and it won't pucker or warp the fabric!

OH HELL THE FUCK YES
you ever just sit and realise u canβt remember 80% of your childhood? like β¦ what happened? who am i ..?
Many people in the comments are saying βtraumaβ, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. Itβs called Childhood Amnesia, and itβs a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to βtrickβ your brain into remembering with different tactics.
This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It canβt be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.
This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is βstored in the bodyβ, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories wonβt generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.
reblogging this because Iβve legit seen people freaking out when they realised they canβt remember some of their childhood, thinking they might have some repressed trauma.
