Oky but you GOTTA watch the version with a voiceover, it is GREAT 😂
@that-gay-jedi requested that i talk some about material conditions and their effect on worldbuilding so here's something I'm thinking about
One area where the conditions of day to day life never seem to be fully considered in their impacts on the worldbuilding: magic systems.
I'd have to do more research to support this theory, but I think that this is one of the major ways that D&D has shaped how we Do Worldbuilding in fantasy. Most magic systems, in the way they are shown to us, have a lot of very combat-focused applications. Even if it's not all fireballs, lightning bolts, and more classic D&D wizard type stuff, physical/elemental type magic is explored from the angle of "how do I hurt/kill people with this" or "how do I destroy things with this"
But. If you're in a roughly pre-industrial fantasy world, and a portion of the population that's at all significant has magic, or can learn magic, that affects the natural world, the oldest and most widespread type of magic or method of using magic likely isn't going to be for warfare, and even when writers question the combat-centered magic, they usually go for like, exploring how magic is incorporated into the arts or something
Which is great. But in most pre-industrial societies, like 90% of the population is rural farmers. What I'm saying is, where is the farm magic.
The first spells to be developed, the oldest and most well-known spells, should really be like this:
banish slug
repel frost
corral
loosen dirt
uproot
magic scythe
separate chaff
repair horse
castrate bull
deworm
summon scarecrow
peel sheep
direct moisture
What farmer even today wouldn't find loads of uses for magic? Charms that keep patches of ground above freezing. Magical explosions that disseminate seeds instantly all over your fields. Shade spells to protect your plants from beating sun.
If magic can summon demons or familiars or make constructs to do stuff for you, you bet your ass that stuff was used by farmers long before it was ever used for fighting. The most culturally important use of necromancers isn't creating soldiers to form undead armies, it's reanimating your dead mule so he can still pull your plow. Farmer warlocks will summon demons from hell to haul manure for them.
If you have wizards in a fancy wizard private school learning how to create a shield of frost, that knowledge had to come from somewhere, and the answer is probably thousands of years of farmer wizards learning how to magically protect their crops from extreme heat and cold.
I want to see side notes in worldbuilding about how every spell used for combat is basically a repurposed farming spell.
This spell for summoning a magical suit of spectral armor that shatters weapons? Yeah, that was originally developed for chickens so foxes would shatter their teeth when they tried to bite them. It was used for centuries before someone thought of trying it on a person.
Small dragon species and corvids occasionally engage in trade with each other. Magpies have learned that dragons desire gold more than anything, and so they can fetch a hefty price for it!

A somewhat part 2 to the tragic baguette story. You were all so sad the red dragon didn’t get his bread, so..

Worldbuilding stuff:
If your story has an idle nobility class, their culture shouldn't just be different from the general population, it should be an over-the-top caricature of the common folks' culture. Whatever the population generally agrees is ideal, fair, admirable, or good, the nobility will take into stupid extremes.
Contrary to the beliefs of many, people are actually not at all happy when they're idle - a person with no assigned task or duty will go out of their way to come up with one. And all around the world, whenever there's been an upper class with nothing to do, they've started to compete with each other over stupid shit, but always stupid shit that the culture they live in considers positive qualities.
From the noblemen in Europe challenging each other to a possibly lethal duel over insulting someone's hat, to a Chinese noblewoman being moved to tears by the beauty of someone's calligraphy, bored elites everywhere have always wanted to outdo each other in their expressions of possessing all the noble traits that this culture in particular holds in value.
You can, and should, use this as a way to highlight what the actual values of this society is. In a setting where being religious is held as an admirable trait, there is nobility coming up with new ways to one-up each other in their expressions of worship. Society that values art and music will have them competing over who hires the most artists, and who employs the most talented musicians. Aggressive, war-like people will have fuels to the fucking death over a stupid hat.
Literally anything can be competed in, and bored people with far too much time and money in their hands will become competitive over the most ridiculous things. This isn't just an useful tool in worldbuilding, but also a fun one.
Places you should add to your little town/city in your fantasy world!!
Post offices. Wild, I know. But give me the unhinged kind. Pingeons and little postal dragons all over the place. You enter. The most disgusting smell fucking assaults your nostrils. You know what it is. Letter in hand, you go up to the counter. The postal worker is just a slightly bigger pigeon. You shed a tear.
PLAYGROUNDS!! Create the most dangerous kinds of playgrounds, the ones suburban moms would TRIP if they ever saw one. Monkey bars that are way too tall, swings that go full circle... The metal slide stays the same, it's already painful enough.
PARKS!! MAKE IT ALIVE!! Show people going on walks, reading beneath trees. C'mon most of them are already hundred years old (And are going to die after that CR 15 creature wrecks the town) anyways!! Show couples and picnics, show a family enjoying the sunday, give me someone picking flowers for their loved ones.
A bakery! Do you know how much these places are underrated? And do you know how much plot potential they have? Every good story starts with food poisoning or granny's recipe! Give me a place your players/readers are going to treat like home and, for once, it's not a tavern or a guild.
Government buildings! Give me a town hall that has a kilometric line in front of it. Give me a registry that is as old as this town. Give me police stations! Give me courtrooms! Make one of your players get arrested and now all of the party has to go through burocracy like a bunch of normal people!
(Who am I kidding? You don't need to make them get arrested. They are going to do that for you.)
Touristic attractions! Give me a full-on statue of the country's leader! Give me museums! Give me streets, ruins and whatnot that attract thousands of tourists everyday! Give me an annoying city guide that tries to get the party's attention everytime!
Magazine stands! Magazines don't exist? Newspaper stands! From the Queen's Journal to the most questionable new piece of Fox's Tailtracker, you have it all! Make your players doubt what's actually happening, sprinkle a little fake news... Or is it fake at all?
...Toy stores. OK HEAR ME OUT. Make magic toys; miniature skyships that actually fly, metal toy dragons that expel fire, little wands that make little light spells, wooden creatures that can move and make noises... Make children happy! And your players too because they will waste their money on these stuff.
Instrument store!! Make your bards happy with special instruments or just weird ones! Give me a battle in one of those that is just filled with funny noises and the worst battle soundtrack ever!!
Not exactly a place but... Cleaning carts!!! Show me people cleaning the streets, picking up the trash, cutting trees!! Make the town look clean!! Give me an old man that is really proud of his work!!!
(or ways to make your players feel even worse when the villain destroys the town later on :) )

do you have a recipe for the cinnamon rolls?? they look amazing
hey yes!
its my best baking outcome ever, so im happy to share
dough: 600g all-purpose flour, 1 tsp tumeric, 7g dried yeast, inch of salt, 1/3 cup sugar, 120g vegan sour cream, soy milk (i added it gradually so i dont know how much was it in the end), flax egg
filling: 1tbsp sugar, 1 tbsp cinnamon, 3 peaches, skin on cause i wouldnt bother taking it off, boil them down with a splash of soy milk until they get creamy and silky
drizzle: 1/2 packet vanilla pudding, 1 tbsp sugar, 150 g soy milk, boil it until it gets thick and stir in 30g of vegan sour cream until it gets looser but still creamy
for the dough as usual, first adding yeast to warm milk, then stir in the rest of the ingredients forming the dough ball, then knead it for a while, i dont know what is considered too much but i did have fun with it for some 30 minutes on the counter top, i then greased it and put it to rest for two hours on the counter. after the two hours i kneaded it again for a couple of minutes, rolled it into a rectangle and spread the filling on, rolled it tightly and cut it with a knife, placed the rolls in a greased sheet pan and into the fridge overnight, baked them in the morning. then while still warm drizzled the drizzle, which i prepared when i put them in the oven, so they took 30 minutes baking and the drizzle could cool down in the fridge.
thanks to the original post
entomologists are the most fucking wild people ive ever met
i pointed out a cool wasp to one and she just picked it up with her bare hands and started showing me different features she was using to identify the species
on a walk with another one he just paused, turned, violently shoved his hand into some rotting wood and offered me a tunnel web spider like oh okay i guess-
when i was in college i did larp shit and one of the guys in the group was an entomology student and i once watched him drop directly to a plank position in the middle of a swordfight to look at a moth on the ground
If your cat is curious abt what you're eating always let em have a lil whiff. 9/10 times they don't even wanna eat it they just wanted to know what it was. it's cute
*WWHEEZEE*
on this day one year ago someone sewed a fried egg to a tshirt
this is your only day to reblog this for a year
i missed my chance last year so this has been in my queue for 364 days
iconic
Wait what happened
Remember when those two cops pushed over that old man and then just kept walking as he lay on the sidewalk unconscious and bleeding? Well, they got suspended. But then, then, 57 members of their squad resigned from their Emergency Response Team posts “in disgust,“ not because of what those cops did, but explicitly because they faced consequences for doing it.
Technically they resigned because the police union said they would stop protecting them in court for war crimes brutality charges, not solidarity
not sure if that’s better tho
“I quit because I’m not going to be legally protected for murdering the people I’m supposed to serve” isn’t the win they think it is
this is Duke
Duke tried to go through the cat door
the cat door of the baby gate, meant specifically to keep him out of the basement and away from the cat food
Duke is NOT in fact, a cat
Duke has shamed his ancestors (and knocked over a lamp)
oh my god.
New superhero: Crime Man.
He stops crimes exclusively by comitting crimes. He out-crimes the criminals.
The Punisher does this and the crime is murder
The Punisher doesn’t stop crime, he punishes criminals. Big difference. Crime Man is more proactive than that.
So what you really mean is like. A totalitarian government that profiles people and arrests them before they commit crimes (which is a crime)
No, it’s more like stopping a credit fraud from happening by comitting arson.
*A mugger threatening me with a knife* Give me your money! *Crimeman appearing from the darkness with a bigger knife* NO CRIMINAL! You give me YOUR money!
I love the efforts to get deeply analytical and political but op just shuts them down with no crime man does CRIME
BUT BETTER
He finds out someone’s planning to rob the bank so he robs it first so there isn’t any money left when they get there.
Armed robbery? Hold their family hostage until they deliver their guns in an unmarked bag behind a gas station
shirt and pants with horizontal black and white stripes
A black domino mask
A dark grey wool hat
a big sack with a dollar sign on it where he stores his gadgets
a yellow sash reading “CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS”
I drew fanart
did I get it right?
Now that’s a hero if I’ve ever seen one.
Check out this amazing Crime Man comic by @micaxiii
You do the crime, you get the crime.
The plan is working!
HE LOOKS LIKE THE QUOTE ‘Be Gay Do Crimes”
He is gay, and does crimes.
Crime Man strikes again
I like Crime man
And Crime Man likes you too
¿ what are his Powers?
Resourcefulness, audacity, and a sense of humor.
Speaking of company names, I’m considering several for whenever I get to the point where I can publish a Crime Man graphic novel.
Berrybo Comics is the the main one I’m considering. Or maybe just Berry Comics.
you know its great that you’re actually trying to make your ideas like Crime Man and Ducks a reality because whenever I see posts like this about cool story ideas I forget like “Oh yea, people on Tumblr do have the power to make things for real that aren’t just Tumblr posts. Neat.”
I look forward to any future Crime Man projects!
The struggle is seeing the projects through to the end but I keep trying.
I absolutely love crime man and I need more of him!!
Like I said, I’m working on it.
If you’d like to help me, please consider buying a writing commission from me so I could use the money to pay my artists.

There was an arrest across the street from my place in Oakland one day – three cop cars with a bullhorn and guns out – and before I could even get out the gate there were a couple people posted up and one of them was filming and another one was narrating in a calm but very loud voice, just
“HE IS COOPERATING! HIS HANDS ARE EMPTY! HE IS DOING WHAT HE IS TOLD TO DO! HE IS HOLDING STILL! HIS HANDS ARE EMPTY! HE IS NOT BEING THREATENING! HE HAS PUT HIS HANDS BEHIND HIS HEAD AS ASKED! HE IS NOT RESISTING!”
and that was something I hadn’t thought to do before. It certainly let the cops know what the narrative of eye witnesses was going to be.
I especially liked “his hands are empty” because this statement would still be true and a witnessed reason the police should not become violent even if it turned out he had a weapon on his person somewhere.
I see people in NYC stop and record a lot. Even if they are just being nosey, that’s still witnesses if shit goes down.
