it's done! 144 squares crocheted all in a two-colour variation of a granny square and then seamed together in a baby blanket.

I had a lot of fun with this project and I also learned a lot along the way. Looking at the finished blanket, I can see how different my tension was for squares by how much they puff up after the seaming! This picture is after washing and drying, because first off, a blanket made over a year and a bit probably has a bunch of dirt on it and second, I don't want there to be any surprises if I tell the parents to toss it in the washer and dryer. I also lightly ironed but that didn't really stop the puffing.

I am extremely pleased with the design I chose for this - there were many variations in the running (and I had a little poll for it as well, here and on my discord) and in the end I went with a fun asymmetrical pattern that still had a lot of orderly lines to make me happy.

Also cannot believe that the colour lines could turn out this crisp - like I am shocked at the effect when they're arranged like this.

And now that I've made this, I do want to make something else with half square triangle crochet but not with cotton again because this was a pain to seam and it definitely has less stretch than wool would. Before this, I had bought yarn to make a cardigan from half square triangles and maybe I make that or I try for something else. We'll see.

This is what the backside looks like! the squares are joined with a slip stitch join through the back loops of the squares. It also worked out that there were 11 seams horizontally and vertically and I used 11 colours on this so I just used a different colour per seam and then did a final slip stitch edge all the way around.

And I finished it before the baby was born turned one year old! Look, it's fine, it's still much bigger than her. Finished dimensions are approximately 30"x30".

Btw the heat *is* why we see water that's not really there, but mirages aren't exactly hallucinations so much as optical illusions:

It's just the changing density of the air refracting light weirdly, so it looks like there's a reflection of the sky on the ground, which our brains often interpret as a pool of water. It can also happen upwards instead of downwards, especially at sea, when the air is much colder near the surface and a warm front appears above it:

Which, btw, is one possible explanation for ghost ship sightings, so that's fun :)

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.

When calling somewhere and they leave you on voicemail, especially in a professional setting, please leave your name, your number, and your reason for calling. It makes it easier for anyone who is calling you back and makes it less likely for you to sound like a scam.

If you know the name of the person you are trying to meet, or the department that will make it even easier.

Examples below:

Calling a doctor's office;

"Hello this is Iyanu Youneek. I am calling to make an appointment to visit Dr. Doctor. Please call me back at 555-124-7545 as soon as possible."

Calling another company as a representative of a company.

"Hello, this is Misha Collins from Tumblr Co. Trying to reach Castiel of Company Name. I am hoping to set up a business meeting like we have previously discussed. Feel free to call back Monday through Friday 8 AM-6 PM, at 555-097-5444"

If you are calling a government office for assistance with a task:

"Hello, this is Hatsune Miku, I am hoping to get assistance in filling out my passport paper work. Please call me back at 555-879-5678 after 9 AM. Thank you."

If you make it clear who you are, why you are calling, how they can get back to you, it makes the entire process a lot smoother for anyone working the call.

Yes Caller ID exists, it doesn't always work, if you get transferred from another location it will give that number as well, or.maybe the number you are calling from isn't a number that can receive the call.

Nor should you assume the person calling out to you has access to all of your information and immediately knows why you were calling if you didn't tell them. A lot of call centers operate on a need to know basis and access to previous calls or your personal information may be limited, or even restricted. And even if the information is accessible that doesn't mean the Caller calling you back is able to play detective to figure out why you were calling.
