THE ARENA, THE COURT, AND THE TEMPLE.
I frequently weave political and social statements, observations, and insights into my works. These are blended seamlessly into the narrative, so the reader is not distracted by their inclusion, yet absorbs and understands the assertions in an almost subliminal way. One exception is my book, On the Highway of Irreverent Rumination and Delusion, which is entirely composed of narratives dissecting…

ARE YOU THE 100TH MONKEY?
The 100th Monkey Effect is based on a controversial study from the 1950s conducted by Japanese scientists on Macaque monkeys on the island of Koshima. Researchers observed that some monkeys learned to wash sweet potatoes in water to remove sand before eating them. Over time, this behaviour spread among the monkey population. However, the claim that once a critical number (hypothetically, the 100th monkey) adopted this behaviour, monkeys on other islands, who had never been in contact with the original group, began washing their potatoes.
This led some to believe that information can be transferred through a mysterious field of collective consciousness, beyond direct learning or imitation.
British biologist Rupert Sheldrake proposed the theory of Morphic Resonance, which suggests that behaviours, skills, or knowledge can be transferred across individuals and even species through an invisible field. This aligns with ancient spiritual traditions that believe in a collective human mind where knowledge is stored and accessed.

BZ Shippers.
SIPPERS, GULPERS, AND SANDY BOTTOMS will be released in approximately one week from now. Around the 18th of April - I cannot be precise about the date, but I will post a note here once it's published.
.
This Rum focused tome reveals the true stories about the tot you won’t believe, the messdeck anecdotes you believe are true but are just shaggy dogs.
This book combines official accounts of mutinies, captains' tables, and court-martials, along with apocryphal accounts, the narrative chronicles passed down through generations of sailors, the well-spun dits.
But which are genuine, how much truth lies in the fiction, and what is pure fantasy or folklore?
.
At the end of each narrative, there is an insight into the truth of the tale, where it stands regarding authenticity, where it sits within the boundaries of messdeck banter and reality, its place in naval heritage, and in preserving the greater picture of Royal Naval life.
Up spirits, lads.
IT’S ONLY A COUPLE OF WEEKS AWAY.
You thought you knew everything about the Tot, the mob's daily rum ration, Admiral Vernon’s orders, splicing the mainbrace, and the pipe, ‘Up Spirits’.
You have read the official reports and academic accounts, as well as books on naval history, and are aware of the final issue.
But what of the stories, the narratives, the verbal chronicles passed down through generations of sailors? The messdeck anecdotes, the apocryphal accounts, and the shaggy dogs?
Sippers, Gulpers, and Sandy Bottoms ventures into these lesser-sailed seas, where truth and fiction mingle in the sea mists of naval folklore, mixing humour with hardship, the mundane with the heroic, and fact with fantasy. These are the stories that fill the gaps when official history is too thin, too sad, or too dull.
So, pull up a bollard, grab a Tot, and read things you never knew about this remarkable spirit. A spirit that defined the Senior Service for over three hundred years.
Early April will see the release of the latest Royal Navy Blue Book, ‘Sippers, Gulpers, & Sandy Bottoms’ – The Rum Rats tales of the Tot.

… I thought I lost them when, BANG, BANG... they shot out my rear window.
A thousand cuboid crystals flew about my head, bouncing off the windscreen and making an annoying little sprinkling sound as they hit the leather seats. The glass particles stung the naked flesh of my arms; they hit the side of my face and peppered my scalp. Pinprick cuts, specks of bright red blood appeared like evil goosebumps over every inch of my exposed skin.
I got away that time by driving past the truck and cutting over three lanes. I only just made the exit, the back-end fishtailing as I fought the wheel, hitting the ramp at seventy miles an hour. I am still uncertain how I made that turn without losing it. I will no doubt brag about my skill as a driver sometime in the future, perhaps when I tell the story over a cold beer in some shithole bar in the middle of nowhere. But the truth is, I was milliseconds away from death; only Lady Luck got me out of that one...

NORTH TO MAYNARD
A tale of an urban spirit in this modern world of mobile technology. Libby and Simon are travelling North, to Maynard, when a glitch with the Sat-Nav sets off a strange string of events which exposes something that could happen to any one of us, at any time.
.
Excerpt
…Within a few miles, a thick, heavy, dark layer of omnipotent grey storm clouds filled the sky and blocked out most of the daylight. I adjusted my driving position, sitting a little more upright.
I switched my headlamps on as I peered into the gloom ahead.
‘At the next junction, turn right’
In this dim half-light, the woman’s voice coming from the Sat-Nav seemed somewhat reassuring rather than an annoyance as it was earlier.
The heavy atmosphere was interfering with the radio signal.
I changed channels by reaching down and pressing a few buttons until I found one playing something soft and gentle, something relaxing, which was not as affected by the storm as some others.
‘Keep your eyes on the road’
I glanced at Libby. She was still in a deep sleep.
I must be hearing things.
I wound the window down enough so I could smoke another one of my little white coffin nails. The breeze was far cooler now that the rainclouds were directly above us. The air was already damp with impending rain.
I placed the cigarette between my lips, holding my lighter to its tip. As I flicked the cogwheel, I fumbled, dropping it.
I looked down. It was on the floor between my legs. Keeping one hand on the steering wheel and one eye on the road, I fished about with my free hand until I touched the lighter.
‘That’s how accidents happen’
I froze, the unlit cigarette still in my mouth, lighter in hand.
"What the hell…" I was bemused.
‘When you’re not watching the road, that’s when accidents happen’
It was the woman's voice from the Sat-Nav, she was speaking to me.
No, it could not be, that is impossible.
Was I dreaming? I had fallen asleep.
Was I dead?
It was a daydream. I shook my head to clear it.
"This is not real", I mumbled to myself as I lit my cigarette, winding the window down a touch further to let more cool air in.
‘Oh, this is real, Simon’…

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
I have often been asked to explain the difference between the two books, Jack's Dits and Jack's Dits 2, and whether the second is merely a continuation of the first.
The answer is both yes and no.
JACK'S DITS (THE ORIGINAL)
Jack's Dits is an eclectic collection of humorous yarns, fables, and anecdotes. Many have been regaled time and again for years on end, passed down through generations of sailors and from ship to ship. With each telling, a dit is subtly altered: shortened, elongated, or enhanced to suit the mood and occasion of its spinning.
These Dits, Gen Dits, and Gash Dits are interspersed with a few jokes, some tidbits, and a couple of ditties.
JACK'S DITS 2 – MORE TALES FROM THE MESS
Jack's Dits 2 continues in the same tradition, spinning humorous yarns, fables, anecdotes, and jokes. However, it also contains more ditties, some poems, quotes, oddities, a whole bunch of short dits which never found their way into the original volume, and many more jokes.
So, they are the same, but different.
If you enjoyed Jack's Dits, I am certain you will love Jack's Dits 2. Both books are full of cutting humour, absurdity, and preposterous farce. They are frequently obscene, regularly sexually explicit, and often vulgar.
Together, they form a genuine reflection of messdeck banter; the very banter which, in large part, helped make the Royal Navy the best navy in the world.
