Anglophone amateur language enthusiast. B1 to B2 in French, A1ish? in Polish. Trying to pick up some German. Interested in a variety of languages, especially smaller or endangered ones, and their little quirks. I want to learn more about (certainly not limited to): Irish (and Celtic languages in general), Basque, Georgian, Hebrew, Icelandic, Farsi, Inuktitut, and basically any Slavic language and the connections between them.

I have ADHD, so I end up 'leapfrogging' between different languages of interest somewhat frequently. I genuinely find some of the more technical grammatical aspects interesting. Please don't hesitate to tell me interesting things about languages.

If you’re learning a language seriously with the intention of using it long term and making it a part of your life you need to let go of the idea that it’s something you can just get over with and rip off like a band aid. Anyone that tells you that you can be fluent in three months or less is probably trying to sell you something.

This is gonna be a several months or years long project. And you’re not stupid. You’ll feel stupid. A lot. But you’re not stupid.

there is no amount of language learning that is useless. I think it obviously scales up in wonderfulness as you learn more, but even just being at the point where you can recognize what language is being spoken or written is still a more useful thing than not knowing that. it is lovely to say hi to people in their language! any attempt to learn is important. you don't get fluent overnight. and you don't have to get fluent overnight. more knowledge is better than none. it isn't just all or nothing.

Honestly this is part of the reason why I enjoy 'dabbling' in various languages (also have ADHD). But even just having this little window of insight into another way to communicate just feels so cool and rewarding to me!

It appears I have underestimated the power of picking up an obscure textbook teaching a random language from the library.

I’ve always made jokes about pluralising with ‘-im’ where it doesn’t belong, but nothing can actually match Israel itself.

My favorite of these is that “sealed beam headlights” on cars are referred to as “haSealbeam”. What do you call a single sealed beam headlight, then? Why, “haSealb”, of course!

Pro Tip: Writing reveals what you don't know

Writing is probably the most underrated language learning habit. Not because it teaches you grammar by itself, but because it exposes the invisible parts of your knowledge. The moment you try to express a real thought, you discover the words you don't know, the grammar you can't quite use, and the ideas you understand only when someone else says them. Writing doesn't create the gaps—it reveals them. And once you can see them, you know what to learn next.

tried this out today- found it quite helpful for recognizing gaps/blind spots that I need to improve on in Polish- will definitely be trying tp make a habit of it!

My Babcia has bestowed upon me a lovely English-Polish dictionary (which may be a little dated), but I find that working with physical materials is much easier for my ADHD brain to focus on- handwritten notes, print articles, and textbooks my beloved.
