TIL dogs on mushrooms is a thing
My partner's betta has been really lethargic so we put on Boobahs to give enrichment and she just...loves it. She'll just swim right to the screen and sit and watch, not flaring or anything.
hm so psa bc i didnāt know this, itās not common knowledge, and flu season is around:
apparently you arenāt supposed to take dextromethorphan (a common cough suppressant. itās in stuff like cough syrup, mucinex dm, tylenol severe cold) with sertraline (aka zoloft, the antidepressant) bc it has the risk of causing Serotonin Syndrome, which is not as fun as the name suggests. iām not a doctor but like, avoid drug interactions bc they can be serious.
remember to read labels guys aaa
Not just sertraline, any SSRI or SNRI. Serotonin syndrome can kill you. When I was younger and on a lot of medication, a dose of cough medicine landed me in the ER. Always check potential interactions here before taking anything with antidepressants, even if itās over-the-counter.
I just learned recently that this also includes tramadol, with its additional SNRI action. Which a disturbing proportion of doctors surveyed in one study were previously unaware of.
Note: Tramadol also should not be prescribed alongside other SNRIs/SSRIs, for the same reason. As commonly as this does happen, as noted in the same study. Iāve certainly had them prescribed together before, besides never knowing to watch out for other possible medication interactions there.
As a general rule, itās always a good idea to check any medications you take for potential interactions with anything else you may be putting into your system! Definitely including food and supplements.
Guys, Iām a pharmacist. I love how everyone on this post is so engaged with their drugs. And while I might educate people about the signs of serotonin syndrome, I would not advise them against taking a little short term course of it for a cold based on an interaction with sertraline alone. Iād have to look at the rest of the medication list and talk with the person before Iād keep them from using a cold medication like this. Serotonin syndrome is serious but rare.
I agree with the concepts of this post! Do check interactionsāI always do! Experience and education can help, though.
Consider calling your pharmacist, if you can. Find a good one who you really like and trust. Theyāre usually better than an automatic interaction checker, and weāre also free!
Along the same lines, veterinarians, donāt shy away from using trazodone for a situation because the pet is on an antidepressant! Serotonin syndrome is serious but rare, and even more so at normal doses. And if youāre not sure, emailing or calling one of your friendly vet behaviorists is as free as calling a pharmacist!
It costs you literally nothing to leave service dogs the fuck alone.
yall. this isnāt a joke. if i can tell a 5 yr old āmy dog is working, please let her beā and they understand then you can too. those dogs ARE working. they have a job to do. and when we say āleave them aloneā that includes making faces at them and baby talking them. literally act like they are just someoneās bag or something. if you distract them they could fail to alert their owner to a seizure or blood sugar issue or allergen. you are literally jeopardizing someoneās life bc you canāt have basic decency, respect, and self control.
SAY IT LOUDER
am I allowed to tell the person Iām proud of the dog? Or should I just not bring up the dog?
Ignore the dog. Do not mention the dog.
Would you walk up to a stranger and be likeĀ āOh damn your wheelchair is doing such a hecking good job being a wheelchair you go lil buddy!ā no? then donāt do it to service animals that are clearly wearing their vest/collar/harness whatever it is that marks them as service animals
[ID: Comment from @certifiedcoolkidno1 āanimalsā¦..arenātā¦ā¦.objectsā¦ā¦.ā]
Serviceā¦..animalsā¦..areā¦..legallyā¦..classifiedā¦..asā¦..assistiveā¦..devicesā¦..
Yāall literally do not care how many disabled people you kill and how many disabled lives you ruin - you want to coo at and pet the cute dog.
Go fuck yourself asshole.
Here, if you want a comparison that isnāt an object: I worked as a caregiver for people with developmental (usually accompanied by physical) disabilities. My job was to accompany them into the community for various activities including shopping, dining, and leisure activities. And everywhere we went people would come up to ME and tell me what a good person I was, what a great service I was providing, god bless me, etc.Ā Not only was it embarrassing for both me and my consumers, it was distracting! I was supposed to be paying attention to my consumers and their needs, which could often change rapidly depending on their conditions, and instead I was having to deal with some prick who felt the need to voice what a martyr I was for doing my job. And theyād usually get angry if I ignored them or informed them they were distracting me from my job, which sounds familiar.
So yeah. Leave. The Dog. Alone. All youāre doing is making yourself feel good while distracting the dog from its job and endangering the person itās supposed to be helping.
Question: I know service dogs are for a variety of maladies (I hope thatās not offensive, if so plz correct me) so is it wrong to even go up to the person and calmly tell them their dog is cute and ask them to give them a pet for me later when theyāre off the clock? Without actually giving the dog attention?
What exactly is it about āIgnore the dog. Do not mention the dog.ā that yāall arenāt grasping.
Oh right. Itās not what you want to do so youāre just going to keep trying to weasel your way around it. Because fuck disabled people, itās a cute dog.
Whatās really getting me is that all of these ābut what if Iā examples blatantly involve inserting yourself into a disabled personās life just to get to their dog. Like
[ID: A white stick figure on a black background. Orange text says āthatās a human personā]
people love talking to my dog or asking questions while weāre in line and therefore canāt just leave.Ā if weāre in line chances are I feel terrible, heās doing his job and Iām trying not to fall on the floor I do not have the time or energy to answer questions.Ā he knows heās a good boy and that heās very smart.Ā I know heās doing a good job.Ā I should not have to worry about people petting him when Iām having tachycardia and actively need him to do his job.Ā just leave us and our dofs alone
disabled people: leave me and my assistive devices including service animals and caregivers and aides alone

AAAAAAAAAHHH!!!
This is such an abstract type of comedy I donāt even know how to handle it
Gonna talk about those MRNA vaccines real quick.
So, many of us (possibly not all, because other vaccines in the pipeline) are going to be getting either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
What vaccine you end up getting is likely to depend on your age, health, and where you live. Pfizerās vaccine is harder to store and transport, so if you live in a big city youāre more likely to get that one.
For what Iām going to say, though, it doesnāt make a difference.
Youāre going to be getting twoĀ shots, a few weeks apart. For Moderna, itās 28 days (4 weeks). For Pfizer, itās 21 days (3 weeks). Yes, this sucks. No, this is not ideal for mass vaccination. Youāll get a card that will remind you to come back for the second dose. The person administering the shot, most likely a pharmacist, will also ask for your cell phone number so they can text you. Because if you donāt come back that first shot is a waste of time.
We donāt know for sure if the single shot gives any protection at all, but the reasonable assumption is that it doesnāt.
This means you need to get your ass back in there for that second shot. And while you are waiting for that shot, you are not protected.
This means you should continue to wear a mask, etc. In fact, if possible, you should be even more careful, because if you get sick and canāt come in for that second shot? Theyāll most likely have to start over. The trial included longer periods between the two, so you might be fine, but there is a risk here.
And once you have had that second shot?
Itās going to take two to four weeks to build antibodies, during which time you will have lower, but increasing, protection. Theyāll tell you what it isā¦that data hasnāt been released yet, but will be.
So you should still continue to be careful for those weeks.
Finally!
We donāt know if these vaccines provide what is called sterilizing immunity, meaning you canāt be infected and canāt pass it on.
They may only provide functional immunity, meaning you get infected but donāt get sick. You could still transmit COVID-19 to others, although the risk is lower.
Which means?
Yeah, the masks have to stay on until the case numbersĀ and other metrics are looking good.
Please donāt be those people who get that first shot and go throw a wild party. Have a bit of patience.
Frontile workers to their āproblem party friendsā
But seriously, list to OP.
It might be the most important thing you do - it will save lives
Also everyone on the whole damn planet has better be nice to all pharmacy staff during this vaccine thing because OP is rightāalmost everybody is going to get the shots from a pharmacist. Nobody is hiring more pharmacists for that. Weāll have to do the exact same amount of dispensing through all of this and if weāre giving someone a shot while someone else shows up with a new prescription? Theyāre gonna have to wait.
Yeah it sucks to wait for an hour for a very simple refill but thatās what is going to be like. Outpatient pharmacy is, by definition, not an emergency so nobodyās gonna die by waiting for an hour.
Call your refills in a day or two ahead and still plan to wait a while at the pharmacy.
Donāt yell at anybody in the pharmacy just because you have to wait while weāre immunizing everybody and essentially getting us out of the COVID pandemic. If you see someone else yelling at some poor technician at the pharmacy, see if you can diffuse the situation. Stick up for outpatient pharmacy staff during the vaccine rollout, is all Iām asking here.
itās always āthis doll is haunted and is ominously shattering the chinaā and never āhow can I provide adequate enrichment for my haunted doll so she doesnāt destroy stuff out of boredomā
responsible haunted doll ownership means aknowledging your dollās need for interaction and play time! make sure to give her plenty of stuff to look at with her rolling eyes and shatter-proof things to knock over.
remember that knocking picture frames off walls, inverting crosses, and leaving long and disturbing claw marks in your wallpaper is natural haunted doll behaviour and should be managed in a way which is healthy for both you and your doll!

RUN THE DISHWASHER TWICE.Ā
When I was at one of my lowest (mental) points in life, I couldnāt get out of bed some days. I had no energy or motivation and was barely getting by.
I had therapy once per week, and on this particular week I didnāt have much to ābringā to the session. He asked how my week was and I really had nothing to say.
āWhat are you struggling with?ā he asked.
I gestured around me and said āI dunno man. Life.ā
Not satisfied with my answer, he said āNo, what exactly are you worried about right now? What feels overwhelming? When you go home after this session, what issue will be staring at you?ā
I knew the answer, but it was so ridiculous that I didnāt want to say it.
I wanted to have something more substantial.
Something more profound.
But I didnāt.
So I told him, āHonestly? The dishes. Itās stupid, I know, but the more I look at them the more I CANāT do them because Iāll have to scrub them before I put them in the dishwasher, because the dishwasher sucks, and I just canāt stand and scrub the dishes.ā
I felt like an idiot even saying it.
What kind of grown ass woman is undone by a stack of dishes? There are people out there with *actual* problems, and Iām whining to my therapist about dishes?
But my therapist nodded in understanding and then said:
āRUN THE DISHWASHER TWICE.ā
I began to tell him that youāre not supposed to, but he stopped me.
āWhy the hell arenāt you supposed to? If you donāt want to scrub the dishes and your dishwasher sucks, run it twice. Run it three times, who cares?! Rules do not exist, so stop giving yourself rules.ā
It blew my mind in a way that I donāt think I can properly express.
That day, I went home and tossed my smelly dishes haphazardly into the dishwasher and ran it three times.
I felt like I had conquered a dragon.
The next day, I took a shower lying down.
A few days later. I folded my laundry and put them wherever the fuck they fit.
There were no longer arbitrary rules I had to follow, and it gave me the freedom to make accomplishments again.
Now that Iām in a healthier place, I rinse off my dishes and put them in the dishwasher properly. I shower standing up. I sort my laundry.
But at a time when living was a struggle instead of a blessing, I learned an incredibly important lesson:
THERE ARE NO RULES.
RUN THE DISHWASHER TWICE!!!

āWhen I got my first cat, it changed me. There is something about holding a cat that makes your anger melt away. And if someone does something that upsets meāI have to remember my cat. I canāt keep my cat if I get into trouble.ā
āI asked if Major Cabanaw had concerns for the safety of the cats. āOf course, we always want to ensure the safety of the cats, and the staff is great about keeping an eye out for them. But mostly, itās the offenders keeping them safe. I have never once seen an offender kill his own cat. We screen them to be sure they have no history of animal abuse. But Iāll tell you this, there was a guy killed in here because he had spit soda pop onto someone elseās cat.āā
Wow.
Cats now control the prisons. They now have an army.
This post went exactly where I expected. Well done.

i really love this program i feel like my heart is going to burst. there are so many great things about this program, these animals were going to be euthanized but they are being taken care of by people who need that kind of relationship for their mental well being. the prison system in america is messed up but this is definitely a step in the right direction. its such an innovative solution to both the issue of the negative social and psychological impact that prisons have and lowering the euthanization rates in animal shelters.
āweāre not just saving four-legged lives, weāre saving two-legged lives.ā
Itās a proven fact that having inmates, even extremely violent criminals, care for a creature that is small and āhelplessā has a positive impact on the criminals brain wiring. Where before they may have had little or even no regard for life, even their own, the animals foster a sense of empathy and responsibility. The inmate begins to consider the animals needs with every choice they make.
āI cant get into this fight cuse Iāll be put in solitary and my cat will miss me.ā
āIf I do some extra work in x area (laundry, kitchen, ect) I can earn credit for the store (many low security prisons have little general stores where they can buy things like cigarettes, chips, ect) and by Miss Molly that sweet catnip mouse.ā
āNeed to be on good behavior cuse when I get out I can give my cat a better life than this cell.ā
And once out of prison, parolees have a reason to find legitimate work to get things their pet needs or get them special treats and toys. Often a parolee that just has to care for themselves will be able to justify either not getting something they themselves need or not working legitimately for those needs. When they do it for a pet, they often feel a real sense of accomplishment and believe their pet is proud of them for working hard.
Not to mention the effect animals have on depression and anxiety. Coming home to a pet that loves unconditionally after a hard day at work really makes it worth it.
