Writing Tips
Punctuating Dialogue
✧
➸ “This is a sentence.”
➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.
➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”
➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”
➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”
➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”
➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.
“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.
“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”
➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”
➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”
However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!
➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.
If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)
➸ “This applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically express—“
“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.
➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.
➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”
➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.
“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”
➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.
“This shows it’s the same character continuing to speak.”
omg this is so helpful

Remember: the more difficult you make it for them to realize a report is false, the more useless you make the portal.
GO FORTH AND SEW THE SEEDS OF CHAOS! FLY MY PRETTIES! FLY! 🤡😈
Article I’ve written about fandom, and how often times it is not a safe space for people of color as it is for white people.
Whenever people dismiss the idea of there being a divide in fandom, I know for an absolute fact they’re white. Of course the divide doesn’t exist to you, of course you’d say something like “everyone just needs to curate their online experiences!” and slap that on your blog like a bandaid on a bullet wound.
It’s kinda hard to curate my online experiences when racism—and antiblackness especially—is practically everywhere I look; there is no space on or offline that is free from racism, and absolutely no amount of filtering or blacklisting will fix that fact. It’d be nice if we could actually work towards making fandom safer with real methods, and not just empty words that are just a bunch of bullshit you’d find on a greeting card.
"If you TRULY want to make fandom a safe space for people of color, do the right thing and hold space, REALLY listen those who’re telling you that something you may have wrote, drawn, or said was racist or vaguely microaggresive. Don’t just dismiss them and automatically assume they’re trying to label you as an evil person.
Making a mistake doesn’t make you a bad person. Making a mistake, being corrected, and then getting defensive is what makes you a bad person."
Shout out to all the Black ppl that can no longer participate directly in the fandom they love because of the stresses of racism 👍🏾 you contain multitudes of value and I'm sorry that the color of your skin and the power of your voice makes people not want to acknowledge that.
Yes, nonblack people can reblog. I'd appreciate it, in fact, if y'all took the time to vocally support your Black friends/fans in fandom.
"shout out to everyone/POC-" I was talking to Black people. You may absolutely feel inclined to make your own post! But I am talking to Black people. If you are uncomfortable speaking to and specifically showing support to Black people without feeling as if there needs to be a caveat, then this isn't your post to speak 😐 in fact, you may be a part of the problem.
