uber eddie diaz \ season one evan buckley au [ 08x12 inspo ] ,, prologue \ aka writing this before i forget about the idea .
This wasn’t really what Eddie planned when he upped and left El Paso with his son. He jumped to Los Angeles for no reason other than to leave his parents behind. He got lucky with the house he was renting—his landlord was nice, professional but nice. But after three weeks without a job, he knew he couldn’t go another week.
Costs, as always, stacked up against him, and there was only so much in his savings account. He decided on Uber driving after yet another failed job interview. And it was… it was fine. It wasn’t life-threatening, and that’s all he needed after being discharged. It also meant he picked his own hours and could be there for Christopher.
It was just… frankly, it was boring. Eddie had developed a parasocial relationship with radio show producers, heard all the pop hits despite not really liking the genre, and had drowned more five-hour energy bottles than he had before in his whole life. He memorized street names and shortcuts, learned the ebb and flow of LA traffic at different times of the night, and figured out which areas were best to avoid when the bars let out.
The first time it happened, Eddie hardly thought twice about it. Just another passenger, just another late-night ride through the bright neon streets of LA. The guy was the first in. Blond, drunk, face flushed. Then the woman came barreling in, wearing a sequined dress that didn’t seem too comfortable. She rattled off an address with laughter, and Eddie took off, letting the hum of the engine fill the silence.
He turned up the radio, but it didn’t really hide the sounds of an obvious make-out session happening behind him. At least the guy mumbled a light “Not now” when she tried to take things further. Thankfully, Eddie had already kicked someone out of the car today and needed the money to meet his daily quota. He adjusted his mirror and caught a glimpse of blue eyes and a carefree grin right before the two tumbled out of the car with a breathless “Thanks, man.” Eddie watched as the guy was dragged up the stairs to the apartment. When he glanced at his phone, he saw a $10 tip, and a quick check over the back seats showed no stains. So overall pretty good.
Then came the second time.
It was the same guy, different girl. This one was brunette, leaning against him, murmuring something into his ear. Eddie only intervened when she tried to climb into his lap. Safety was an important thing.
The third time was the same.
The fourth time was with a guy, but the pattern didn’t change. So did the fifth, and the sixth, and the seventh time. Every three or four days, Eddie would arrive at a bar, and there he was—the same blond guy, the same ridiculous smile, always with someone new.
Eddie wasn’t going to judge; he was too busy trying to make ends meet to spend time worrying about some stranger’s love life. It was weird that he was often the one to pick him up, but the app was randomized, and the guy tipped well, so Eddie stayed quiet about it.
Still, after enough trips, Eddie started to pay more attention.
Evan Buckley, according to the Uber app, was always charming– obnoxiously so. Even when he was drunk, he was friendly, quick with a laugh, generous with compliments. He flirted effortlessly from what Eddie overheard.
Obviously he’d have to be good to have a high success rate with going home with someone, but there was something strangely methodical about it, too, like he was playing a role. The people he brought home seemed enamored, but Eddie noticed that Buck never seemed all that invested. Not really.
He’d joke, sure, and he’d play the part, but there was a flicker of something hollow in his eyes when he thought no one was looking. It didn’t last long, not when he pulls his partner into another kiss.

Ross' job is nice, it’s simple enough compared to what horror stories he has heard from other servers, his team and manager is nice, and most importantly, it allows him to get a bit of insight into people’s life, even if it’s only for a meal before they go their separate ways forever.
Sometimes the insight he gets is frustrating.

The fifteen reunion was much louder than Alexander expected, he fully thought he would be the few to actually show up from his year, but apparently not– maybe it’s because they didn’t ever organise a ten year one. There was a dull hum of music, classic hits that he is sure played during their prom as well, and conversations were coming from each and every way.
He almost skipped this whole thing but curiosity won out. He might be sociable, but he was an introvert and his plan was to interact solely with the people he remembers liking. Actually liking. He walked towards the open bar only for him to stop when he spotted a familiar face– or well, a familiar birthmark.
Evan Buckley.
The last time Alexander had seen him, they were both eighteen at their graduation, and with those few steps of going to the bar was suddenly full of thoughts of the two of them back then. They weren’t too close– definitely not close enough to keep a connection after high school.
But they were in the same classes for the year so they became friendly, close enough friends. They would help each other complete the homework last minute, back each other’s excuses up, and even one or twice ditched together with only a plan they made on the walk to the class.
He remembers what Evan was like back then, and he could see the boy from back then but he was also a whole new person. He grew into his skin it seemed, but was just as fidgety as he always was– he was now taller than Alexander, who didn’t grow much after school. He half expected Evan to have a girl or two on his side, non-judgmentally of course.
Instead, there was another male, dark haired, eyes glancing around the open hall, stance tall and alert. He was less focused on appearances though, and more about their interactions with one another. He could’ve brushed the stranger off as a classmate he failed to remember if it wasn’t the way they were like with another.
And Alex, he has spent years and years within the corporate world where he has spent months worth of hours sitting in a boardroom, looking as negotiations happen silently with nothing but eye contact. And with his wife, Paris being a psychologist, he learnt a few things about subconscious behaviours.
He wished she was here; both in general and so she could psycho-analyse them better than he ever would be able to. But he knew what intimacy looked like, and Evan and Eddie wears it like a second skin.
They didn’t just interact like the stranger was just a casual plus-one. They weren’t overly affectionate, in fact there was no hand-holding, or whispered sweet-nothings to make the other blush, but that didn’t matter.
They made up for the way that Evan’s body leaned towards Eddie, despite there being a lot of room. And the way that Eddie scanned the room, as if he was making sure it was all fine before relaxing a bit more beside Evan– into Evan.
It was effortless in the way they moved further into the all, in complete step rhythm together. Alex could go up to them, he had no one to talk to, and they were more or less in their own circle, but he nursed his drink and watched. He had time.
Evan was always the guy who had a girl by his side, not always in terms of a girlfriend, but Alex witnessed more than once as Evan would be at his locker before a girl comes up to him, and lead him away equally as fast. While everyone else was kissing under the bleachers, Evan was doing more in classrooms.
Eventually he decided he needs to go and talk to them instead of waiting around idly. Paris isn’t here to drag him around. “Evan Oliver Buckley,” he greeted when he was a few steps away. He watched as Eddie’s eyes cut to him faster than Evan’s.
“Oh man ! Alex, I haven’t seen you in forever man !” Evan said the moment he turned around, not even trying for a pleasant handshake before he dragged Alex into a hug. It wasn’t their first hug, neither of them cared much for toxic masculinity in that way, but it felt so different.
“I almost didn’t come,” Alex admitted, eyeing Evan. The second the hug was over, Evan backed a step up to once again be shoulder to shoulder with Eddie. “But then I figured someone had to keep you in check.”
“Don’t worry, I have Eddie here to do that now.” Evan said, seamlessly introducing the other guy, he was always a master at conversation, even if they ducked into the bathroom to avoid social interactions more than once.
Alex didn’t know how to feel at the fact that he got loosely compared to Evan’s boyfriend. “Nice to meet you,” he said instead, going for a handshake. He tried to read what line of work they would be– as said, he was good at reading people.
He knew Saoirse was going into teaching, with her talent and passion for it she’d be a fool not to. And he could tell that Shawn could do something creative even though everyone was convinced he’d be going into accounting.
He couldn’t come up with one for Evan though. By Eddie’s calloused hands, he assumes he works in a labour heavy place. “So what are you two up to know ?” He asked, and he found himself actually interested in the story that’s about to come.
“Firefighters now actually,” Evan said, throwing a complete curveball. “Over in LA.” Now that was less surprising, Evan never had the same connections to this place as many other people do to their hometown. Alex himself couldn’t leave Pennsylvania because of that.
“LA man ? Fucking hell, bet you have your work cut for you.” He hardly keeps up with the news happening in his area, so he has no clue what’s happening over there. He debated on asking the next question– the one he is sure they get all the time, any time they mention their job.
It also may be a bit insensitive to ask them, but curiosity got the best of him, and he really had to ask– if not for him, then for his wife, who will definitely want all the information she could on his firefighter classmate. “So uh, what’s the calls like ? What’s the worst ones ?”
It was only a split thing, but he noticed the two of them glance at each other, eyebrows furrowed and it was like they had a whole discussion within that second, without saying a word. “Usually– usually it’s boring ones.” It was an non-answer answer, and Alex was happy to move the conversation onwards.
“Of course there are the natural disasters, and the likes. Like the tsunami.” Alexander hummed, never witnessing one before since they aren’t a coastal state. “Although I wasn’t working during it, Eddie was.” Evan said, throwing a quick smile to his plus one.
Eddie wasn’t disinterested in the conversation, but he seemed to be more interested in Evan. Alex saw Evan take the last sip of his drink, and not a moment later the glass was taken from his hand and a squeeze on his shoulder.
He left then, Alex’s eyes stayed on Evan, but Evan’s ones strayed to follow Eddie. At least until he realised what he was doing and gave out an apology. “Don’t worry about it. When I do the same with my wife.” He laughed, even after all this time being married, his eyes still search every room for her.
“Your wife ? How did you guys meet ? How long are you guys together ?” Now, Alexander isn’t a super talkative guy, he likes conversations but much prefers to be in a group of three and pitch in instead of driving the conversation, but if it’s one thing he will talk about forever, it’s about Paris.
So he did, he spoke about meeting her– ironically, while on a family trip in Paris. He did a cheesy introduction line; he couldn’t even call it a pick up line. He asked if she was named after the city of love or was it the other way. There were much better lines, but he was honestly too wired to think of any.
It worked though. And really that’s all that mattered. “How about you and Eddie ? How long have you guys been together ?”
He really expected Evan to get the same dumbstruck smile on his face like he did at the mention of his own partner, but instead his face went red, and his mouth opened and closed repeatedly. “Uhm, we met at work. He joined my station seven years ago. He’s my partner, in everything really– but uh, not dating.”
Forgive Alex for stirring the pot, but his shock wasn’t even exaggerated. “Not dating ? Are you sure ?” Evan would know, but what if he is hiding it because he fears Alex might be homophobic; as if that was possible. “I mean, if I knew you swung that way, I would’ve taken a shot.”
He isn’t sure how Evan reacted less to that than to being mistaken as dating Eddie. “Uh– I do yeah. Swing that way I mean. I would’ve been a totally awful boyfriend to you though back then, I can say that for a fact.”
Alexander couldn't help but laugh, out of everything to take from this conversation. "Yeah ? And why's that ?" he asked, taking another sip of his drink.
Evan shrugged, running a hand through his hair, a habit Alex recognized from high school, although now he didn’t have any gel in his hair to mess up. "Take a guess man. I was just looking for a way to escape whatever was going on in my head. A relationship ?" He let out a short laugh. "That would've been a disaster."
Alex hummed, considering his words. "You don’t seem like a disaster now." And it was true, out of a quick glance at everyone around, Evan held himself up better than over half of them.
Evan tilted his head as if thinking about it, before his eyes searching the crowd. "You can thank– I’d like to think I’ve changed, Eddie definitely helped with that."
And there it was again, that casual intimacy, the way Evan said Eddie’s name like it was the most natural thing in the world. Like it was the most important thing in the world. Does he really not see it ?
"So," Alex said, deciding to push just a little further. If Evan seems too uncomfortable, he will drop it, but this is his chance to change Evan’s life, maybe. "You two aren’t together, but he’s your partner in everything ?"
Evan shifted his weight from one foot to the other. If Eddie was still standing with them, Evan would’ve been bumping off him every shift. Alex doesn’t think Eddie would mind. "Yeah," he said, voice quieter now.
"We raise his kid together. We live together– kinda. I have my own loft, but we use that more as a storage place. We spend every day off together. He’s—" He exhaled, as if he was about to say something more but thought better of it. "He's my best friend."
Alex has spent enough time around stressed people that he recognized when someone was trying to convince themselves more than their company. This time, he decided to let it slide. Mostly
"Well, if you ever do figure it out," Alex said, "I’d put money on you two making it work." He isn’t a betting man, but he is pretty confident in his odds.
Evan let out a breathy laugh, shaking his head. "Thanks for the confidence, man."
Before the conversation could continue, Eddie seemed to stalk back up, handing Evan a fresh drink without a word. Evan took it with a smile, their hands brushing briefly in the exchange. Alex noted the way Evan’s fingers lingered just a second too long before pulling away.
"What are we betting on ?" Eddie asked, clearly catching the tail-end of the conversation. Hopefully it was only the tail end.
"Just Evan’s future."
Eddie raised an eyebrow but didn’t push, simply sipping his drink as he glanced at Evan. "Sounds like a dangerous bet." His tone of voice was serious, but the corner of his lip was raised. Alex bets that Evan could read Eddie more though.Evan rolled his eyes. "You have no idea." He threw a smile in Alex’s direction before leading Eddie away to show him the classrooms.

The Rain
Based on the new footage for season 8b of 9-1-1 only slight spoilers.
I saw the parallels and couldn't help but think of this. (220 words, not read over, just words.)
Evan Buckley used to love the rain- he would often sit on the ledge of his window with his hand stretched out to catch the raindrops falling from the sky. It was a comfort to him. His favourite used to be when the sky would get all dark and he would have to move his hand inside because the droplets are so violent and cold.
Now, the comfort is nowhere to be found. Not when he lost Eddie three times during the rain. The first was at the well, when the rain did nothing but make the situation worse, would make it impossible to get to his best friend.
Then it was the lightening strike- he doesn't know how he felt then because it happened too fast but he swore as he fell he locked eyes with Eddie, even when they were a whole truck ladder apart.
And now, standing in the rain after just saying goodbye to Eddie, he watched while the weather wet his clothes and made them cling to his body as he could only stare at the place where he last saw Eddie's uhaul before it was driven away- now only replace by a pubble.
So, Buck doesn't like the rain, because the moment that the first drop hits his skin, he never felt more alone.

The nurse life isn’t glamorous, but it is interesting. Well, at least it is until you are stuck filling out paperwork during the downtime of your twelve hour shift. Eddie Diaz was in a groove though, letting the background noise of low chatter, beeping monitors, and ambulance sirens to blur into one another, his palm was smudged with black ink, but he was unstoppable. At least he was unstoppable until Maddie Buckly jumped up on the desk, thankfully missing the half–filled intake form pile. “I need a favour.”
Her voice was low and rushed. And Maddie, she isn’t always one to ask for help, at least not for the trivial things, although she is getting better at asking for a shift cover. One that Eddie is more than happy to give even at short notice considering how much shifts of his she has covered without complaint. “What kind of favour ? I’m not doing another night shift with Mary, she gets mean after 7pm.”
Maddie’s lip twitched at that, like she wanted to smile but she was too stressed to. Something he knew one or two things about. “No, not that. I can deal with her,” she looked out towards the door, where people were walking by and not paying attention to anything happening there. “Something bigger. Like– way bigger.”
“How big are we talking ?” Eddie asked warily and leaned back in the chair, twirling the pen in his hand. In all seriousness, Maddie and him have had each other’s backs since he joined the hospital staff, if she needed something from him that bad, he doesn’t think there is anything he’d say no to. “Spill it, Buckley. You’re making me nervous.”
Maddie took a deep breath at that, running a hand through her hair. “My parents are… they’re really intense. Pushy really.” She huffed. “And now that I’m out of the– Now that I’m single, they won’t back off about micromanaging my love life.” Eddie hummed to show he was listening but wasn’t about to interrupt her. He was there for Maddie’s aftermath of Doug, she spent more time in his house crying then in her parents house.
And he’d heard bits and pieces about Maddie’s overbearing parents; not much, but enough to know that pushy would be an understatement, that they were judgmental and were way too invested in Maddie’s life, especially when it comes to her love-life and ‘getting grandbabies’.
“That sucks, but what does it have to do with me ?” He asked once he realised she was done. Did she want to seek refuge in his house or ?
Maddie bit her lip, not a new habit of hers. “I told them I’m seeing someone.”
“You are ?” Eddie blinked. Surely if she was he would know. The shifts are long and they more or less know everything about each other. Eddie had told her about each and every one of his failing relationships with ex-girlfriends. Maddie shook her head and that’s when the realisation dawned on him like a slow-moving train. “Oh no. No, no, no. Maddie…” He takes it back, maybe he wouldn’t do anything.
