If you look at the numbers we can actually all live pretty comfortably for free, we just have to understand which things are completely absurd luxuries. You can absolutely have fresh fruit, but for the sake of the climate it should be fruit grown near you.
I once in a call full of people I had been used to being devout leftists, and mentioned that one of the things we all should strive for is the end of plastic mass production, and I mentioned that I would be sort of sad to lose my Gundam Plastic Model hobby, but that honestly it would be a massive leap for safeguarding against impending climate and waste disaster.
It turned into people calling me a fascist, saying plastic is fine, saying we need joy to live and I wanted to kill joy, telling me plastic production isn't all that bad and even if it was it wouldn't be worth ending for the environment or for the sake of laborers both of which are probably fine anyway.

i’ve made this post a million times but it really does drive me up the wall when people think that the phrase “everything is political” means “everything is related to current political happenings” instead of “everything is a product of its context”
Every time I see this quote I realize how poor even very smart people are at looking at the long game and at assessing these things in context.
One of my favourite illustrations of this was in a First Aid class. The instructor was a working paramedic. He asked, “Who here knows the stats on CPR? What percentage of people are saved by CPR outside a hospital?”
I happen to know but I’m trying not to be a TOTAL know it all in this class so I wait. And people guess 50% and he says, “Lower,” and 20% and so forth and eventually I sort of half put up my hand and I guess I had The Face because he eventually looked at me and said, “You know, don’t you.”
“My mom’s a doc,” I said. He gave me a “so say it” gesture and I said, “Four to ten percent depending on your sources.”
Everyone else looked surprised and horrified.
And the paramedic said, “We’re gonna talk a bit about some details of those figures* but first I want to talk about just this: when do you do CPR?”
The class dutifully replies: when someone is unconscious, not breathing, and has no pulse.
“What do we call someone who is unconscious, not breathing, and has no pulse?”
The class tries to figure out what the trick question is so I jump over the long pause and say, “A corpse.”
“Right,” says the paramedic. “Someone who isn’t breathing and has no heartbeat is dead. So what I’m telling you is that with this technique you have a 4-10% chance of raising the dead.”
So no, artists did not stop the Vietnam War from happening with the sheer Power of Art. The forces driving that military intervention were huge, had generations of momentum and are actually pretty damn complicated.

Speaking of the effects of pie throwing and art in opposition of oppression, and “resistance inspires resistance”:
Imagine sitting in a packed auditorium and some asshole is up front is spouting bullshit about minorites. Like saying they’re filthy and deserve a violent death etc. And there are lots of people nodding along and even cheering and applauding
But no one is saying or doing anything to disagree, so you think that you’re the only one who opposes the speaker. And you don’t want to say anything because you don’t want their ire or violence to be aimed at you
So you go through the entire speech, and possibly your entire life, thinking you’re alone
BUT if just one person has the courage to speak up, to throw a pie, to project art on the screen behind the speaker, then that single act of resistance will inspire others to do the same. It could even inspire you to stand up. Or if you’re the first, then you can inspire others

The No Kings protests absolutely did do something. Just tune into your local city council meeting the next week and see public forum. Chances are there’s a public official advocating resistance of all and any federal orders, or a local housing/immigration activist saying it helped them and then pointing that energy in the direction of more.
3.75% of the entire country was in the streets on Saturday. Might not sound like a lot, but those are the kind of numbers that signal a toppling government or a revolution.
If nothing else it proves to wannabe authoritarians that they can sure fucking try, but they can’t kill us all.

Hey so like, this is funny and all, but if you know someone who genuinely cannot stop thinking about something and who is distressed by that, take a moment and consider that it might not just be bigotry, it might be undiagnosed OCD, and there’s a possibility that getting them mental health help could actually help them be less bigoted. I’m completely serious.
OCD gets stereotyped as “needing everything just so”, but the compulsions associated with OCD are actually just a coping mechanism for the real underlying issue, which is that your brain’s mechanism for moving on from transient thoughts is broken.
If you are neurotypical, you might think about the existence of gay sex by happenstance – you might even picture it, briefly. If you’re not into gay sex and this happens to you, then you’ll probably think “huh weird that I thought of that” – if you think anything about it at all – and then your brain will move on to something else.
But if you have OCD, you might get “stuck” – you might picture gay sex briefly, and then your brain might just keep picturing gay sex, nonstop, no matter what you do, for minutes, or hours, or even days. Some people have thoughts that don’t go away for entire weeks straight. And that can be extremely distressing! It can be distressing even if you don’t have a problem with gay sex at all, just because it won’t stop. You saw a gay person, and that made you briefly think about gay sex, and now you have an image of gay sex playing on loop in your mind, indefinitely, and nothing you do will make it go away.
The right wing loves to prey on people with undiagnosed OCD because they’re easy to manipulate and radicalize. If every time you see a gay person, your brain show you a non-stop loop of gay porn that you cannot stop thinking about no matter what you do, then it’s very easy to be seduced into thinking that gay people are inflicting harm on you just by existing in public life. If every time you hear a foreign language your brain supplies an endless list of mean things that that person could be potentially be saying without you understanding them, it’s easy to be seduced into thinking that people who don’t speak English in America are a threat. If the mere thought of someone getting an abortion can produce a nonstop flashing slideshow of every inflammatory image of an aborted fetus you have ever seen in your life, then the ability of other people to get abortions can feel like it’s a pressing issue that directly affects you, even if it absolutely doesn’t.
When you see bigots who are exhibiting signs of extreme mental distress, ask them if they are ok, and direct them to help. You’d do that if this woman had been in tears because she “couldn’t stop thinking about cows” or “couldn’t stop worrying that her house was on fire” or “couldn’t stop graphically imagining her husband cheating on her.” Don’t ignore your instincts regarding a mental health crisis just because the form that crisis takes seems bigoted.
This is both related and unrelated but genuinely I would love a study to be done on OCD and radicalization/likelihood of joining a cult.
Genuinely religion and cult thinking are the perfect combination to generate OCD but also soothe it.
My cousin has scrupulosity OCD, meaning he is obsessed with the idea of himself and other people sinning before God to the point that he has been unable to leave his house for five years.
For those who don't know the treatment for OCD outside of medication is ERP (exposure response prevention) therapy. The method of which is to expose yourself in leveling doses to the things that make you afraid to desensitize your brain's panic response. So if someone's having intrusive thoughts about harming themselves, an Exposure their therapist might have them do is try holding a knife for longer and longer periods of time without self soothing after.
However here's the thing-
For my cousin his exposures that his therapist was trying to get him to perform were "say the Lord's name in vain", "don't pray before eating", "throw the Bible on the ground." And his parents wouldn't make him do it because then he "would actually be sinning".
He was also obsessed with me going to hell for being queer as well as his little sister. He'd constantly demand people repent or apologize.
I myself have had weeks of being convinced that I was being tortured by God like Job for my sins. As a kid I was convinced I was a prophet of God who could only foresee tragedy and my parents would regularly tell me that they knew I had sinned or lied because God had told them.
People with OCD are just so particularly vulnerable to this kind of thought control but also the dynamic of being told EXACTLY what you need to do in life and how you need to behave to be a good person is also particularly appealing to the doubting disorder.

OCD is a far more debilitating/psychosis inducing disorder then it's ever given credit for. Obviously it does not excuse abusive action or bigotry but it can definitely perpetuate keeping someone in that thought pattern. And remember it's far more common for good people to be obsessed with being bigoted/cruel/bad people than otherwise.

I was just taking to someone about this. That's like, a little over 20-ish percent of her total net worth! She's not a politician or government official, but she has money and she willingly donated a hefty sum to causes that will support those who are at risk of hunger and that will benefit humans and the environment as a whole.
And even if she was being performative, it's helping people. Can we like, not beat down and discourage people from doing helpful things? Especially right now when so many are suffering? Please and thank you.

I love that Viktor Frankenstein is shown treating actually sick people horribly. I love that he goes on this long agrandizing rants about defeating death and then stands in front of people condemned to die, miserable and terrified, and looks them in the eye and goes "ugh terrible condition ugh be glad you're about to be killed you would have died anyway ugh" because yeah that's what an ego boost "I'm gonna defeat death and beat god" will do to you. That's a horrible doctor, an incredibly smart one, but a horrible one. He doesn't care about improving the quality of life of anyone, he doesn't care about actual healing, he cares about his ego, about getting retribution from death for having taken his mother, not anyone else's mother though, or someone else's son or father or daughter or sister, just his mother. Even when he finds out about Harlander, who has done so much for him, there was no empathy only disgust at his compromised body. And I liked that it was shown because so many doctors, even to this day still, despite the development of ethics and deontology committees, don't understand that the job isn't to defeat death or destroy a disease, the job is to help a human being. Even when you can't heal you should still do your best to help them, improve their quality of life even if they only have one minute left to live. That's the job.
But Viktor didn't vow to become a better doctor, he only vowed to become better than his father but he was still on the same wavelength, still on the same ego trip, just better at defeating death. And the other doctors who rejected him, they were also on the same wavelength, still obsessed with their place vis-à-vis god, as good christians and good extensions of their god, that they shouldn't try to defy him. But noone in that boys' club was identifying the actual problem of their practice. That patients were accessories when patients should be at the center of every single decision a doctor makes.
