Unicorn Hunting is Unethical.

As a polyam creator, I talk about unicorn hunting a lot and the amount of comments that flood in of people defending unicorn hunting is absolutely ridiculous af. Like here is just SOME of the comments I have gotten:

Well, let's start with most groups and organizations ostracize a couple if either one of them says "unicorn", regardless of context.

There are gross people in poly does that mean all poly is bad? No of course not. This is just weird that a group supposedly based on acceptance makes posts like this. Even when the unicorns come out and tell you they LIKE being hunted. Just like everything else, if it doesn't work for you that's fine. But that doesn't make it wrong fort everyone.

Ya know the division to make couples look bad is crazy to me in this lifestyle !!! I hate how every time a kid-friendly game that includes romance comes out (recent example: Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream), and fans express a desire for polyamory in the game, polyamphobic people come out of the wood works to say "Don't do that, that's a game kids play!"

Minors can be polyamorous. Minors can have polyamorous parents or other relatives. Minors are not harmed in any way by exposure of polyamory. I knew I was polyamorous by the age of 12. I felt extraordinarily othered by the lack of representation.

Polyamory isn't inherently some super explicit NSFW thing.

It's literally no different from the "don't let same-gender relationships exist in video games!" argument.

I want more polyamorous representation

I want polyamorous representation in media that is not a punchline, a cheating subplot, or a dramatic love triangle. I want stories where ethical non monogamy is shown for what it actually is. Consent based. Autonomy driven. Built on communication, boundaries, and emotional intelligence.

Most people still think polyamory is chaos or deception because the only time they see it on screen is when a writer needs conflict. Instead of showing real polyamory with honest conversations, relationship models that actually exist, and characters who navigate jealousy in healthy ways, we get triangles and cheating arcs that have nothing to do with ethical non monogamy.

I want characters who practice Relationship Anarchy or polyfidelity. I want media that understands what a polycule is. I want metamour relationships shown as supportive instead of hostile. I want consent and collaboration normalized. I want the same depth and nuance that monogamous relationships have been given for decades.

Representation shapes understanding. And right now, people only know the stereotypes media keeps feeding them. Imagine how many folks would feel seen, validated, or simply less confused if they saw polyamory done right on screen. Imagine how many damaging assumptions would disappear if writers actually researched ethical frameworks, listened to polyam creators, or reflected real experiences instead of tropes built on fear and misunderstanding.

Polyamory deserves visibility that is honest and human. Not sensationalized. Not framed as dysfunction. Just real people building intentional relationships rooted in choice and care. That is the representation I want.
