I feel like what people who were born after Shrek always miss is that it was actually a huge unironic cultural sensation. The minions want what Shrek had. The mcu sits awake at night cursing lord farquaad because they could never have a villain as well written as him

Look at that detail - Shrek and Farquaad have subtle stubble, Shrek has liver spots on his scalp, characters have pores on their skin, Shrek’s ears here even have a subtle transparency like real skin and cartilage. His linen tunic has scruffy and rough edges and lint bobbing on the shoulders. Shrek doesn’t just represent a step forward, it represented a BIG jump. Look back at the early 3D Pixar films and you’ll see a progression in what 3D software could effectively render - first plastic toys, then chitinous insects, then scaly or leathery monsters with an enterprising look into the astoundingly complicated field of hair and fur. Shrek is a joke now, but it revolutionised the field of animation. Shrek finally prompted the Academy to add an Award for Best Animated Feature; after Beauty and the Beast lost Best Picture a few years before, Shrek was the point they could no longer dismiss the art and effort that go into animated films.

It also killed interest in 2D animation in the west but that’s none of my business

Short comic based on this wonderful prompt by @marauders4evr : “Someone needs to make a beautiful comic where Aang’s struggling because Tenzin just became an airbending master but Aang has absolutely no idea how to actually tattoo the arrows because he was only twelve when his entire culture was wiped out, he had only just gotten his tattoos months before he ran away, he would have been far too young to learn the tradition from the side of the tattoo-giver and then said tradition was wiped out forever, so he’s crying as he tries his best, and then Yangchen appears and the Air Nomad Avatar before Yangchen appears and so on and so on, all the way back to the Avatar that came right after Wan, hundreds of Airbenders just sitting with Aang, patiently going over the techniques, cheering when Tenzin stands, bowing to the newest airbender, making sure the culture isn’t lost…”

I’m not gonna pretend Vladimir Todd was a very good series but it did have this absolutely stellar thread of Vladimir, a child who is a vampire, befriending a bunch of goths and being like “yeah I’m a vampire” and they were essentially like “haha big mood”.

The best part is how he totally assumes he’s pulled off the sarcastic secret confession thing and several books later he has to be all, “so guys, I’m sorry to have deceived you but I am a legit vampire here’s proof” and they’re like “yeah we know? You told us ages ago??”

Lawful evil presses in this kitchen. Have had to get large plastic boxes with wheels to put stuff in so it can be dragged out to the accessible zone fairly easily.
