In light of the Panera lemonade thing, I feel like now is a good time to remind people that caffeine has an effective dose that is much closer to overdose amounts than most other drugs (including illegal and heavily stigmatized drugs), that caffeine overdoses are both common and under-reported, that not being able to get through a single day without a drug that was not prescribed to treat a medical condition is not normal, and that the sort of capitalist grind culture that normalizes all of this is bad, actually.
Caffeine headaches are a withdrawal symptom. If you get caffeine headaches when you don't get your coffee fix, you are addicted to caffeine.
Heart palpitations and feelings of impending doom are overdose symptoms, and tolerance can vary enough due to external factors that a high level of caffeine that's fine for you one day could be dangerous for you on another. If you get "panic attacks" and if you regularly drink more than one cup of coffee per day, tell your doctor about your caffeine habits, because those panic attacks may be misdiagnosed caffeine overdoses.
I'm not anti-caffeine – in fact, I'm not anti- any drug. I think adults can make informed choices about their own health, and I think that they should be allowed to do so. But the key to that is the informed part, and an awful lot of people consume genuinely risky amounts of caffeine without knowing any of the risks. In law school, I polled my friends, and discovered that a shockingly high percentage of them had had what were likely caffeine overdoses without realizing that that was what they were, or that they were dangerous. Having a little bit too much coffee and then spending all afternoon feeling like you're close to having a heart attack isn't an everyday occurrence, and it shouldn't be treated like one! Some of these same friends had abused stimulant medications like adderall and ritalin as productivity aids, and I absolutely guarantee that if they'd had the same level of symptoms from an accidental extra dosing of those drugs, rather than of caffeine, they'd have gone to the hospital. But Starbucks and Panera don't hand out adderall and ritalin, and people don't think that merch about adderall and ritalin dependency is cute or quirky, or that an adderall or ritalin habit is indicative of being a hard worker.
I love a cup o' joe in the morning too, but caffeine is a drug, y'all. Stop treating it like it's not.
For the sake of clarity, the maximum dose of caffeine in an adult is about 400 mg a day, though that will vary by individual depending on how sensitive you are to caffeine, and how fast your body metabolizes it; if you're sensitive to caffeine, you need to aim lower, but it's a bad idea to consume more than 400 mg of caffeine in a day. Also, if you're a teenager/kid, it's recommended you don't consume caffeine at all, but come on, no teenager's gonna listen to that. But I'd recommend hanging around a 200 mg per day dose limit if you're a teen; puberty's takes a lot of energy, your body's under plenty of daily stress, the last thing you need is to flirt with a caffeine overdose.
In mild caffeine overdoses, symptoms include anxiety, fast heart rate, nausea, headaches, and dysphoria. ...Not the gender kind, I mean like just generally feeling Bad. So if you've had a lot of caffeine that day, and these issues happen, it's time to stop now.
And if you really fuck up and take a massive overdose, then you're at risk of seizures and death; that's a concern at around 1000+ mg. You don't need to take it all at once, just over the course of a single day; let's say you start the morning with four cups of coffee, then drink a few cans of pop during the day, and go to Panera in the afternoon and have two cups of that charged lemonade... and now you've got a lethal amount of caffeine in your system.
I mean sure, the charged lemonade is safe to drink if you're an adult with a solid caffeine tolerance, but only if you have one, and only if that's the only caffeinated beverage you consume that day.
Honestly, I don't know what the fuck Panera is thinking, what's the point of selling such an overly caffeinated lemonade while not advertising the high caffeine content? Makes no goddamn sense.
That being said, plenty of energy drink brands these days are pushing high caffeine content as a selling point, so watch out for those. In general, read the labels before drinking, and mind your daily caffeine intake. Seriously, people can die from this even if they're perfectly healthy. Don't fuck around.
Finally, if this has you worried and you're thinking "Oh fuck, i should stop drinking caffeine", that's fine too; a fair amount of the reason why we're so chill about caffeine is because the withdrawal is a cakewalk compared to other drugs. There's no health risks to a caffeine withdrawal, it just feels shitty. Caffeine withdrawal gives headaches, anxiety, difficulty focusing, fatigue, and depression. It'll kick in between 12-24 hours after you stopped taking caffeine, and will last 2-9 days, though the worst of it will be in those first two days. Just stay hydrated, take ibuprofen for the headaches, and try to get more sleep, and you'll be able to get through your shitty withdrawal week without too much trouble.
But if you don't quit, you're probably still fine. Just... yknow, actually check the caffeine contents of the stuff you're consuming, and make sure you stop for the day the second you go over 400 mg.
All this, and also: if you're taking prescribed stimulants like Adderall, remember that you'll need to balance caffeine consumption accordingly. They're both stimulants, so they aggravate each other's side effects, including impacts on the heart. Taking a prescribed amount of a stimulant med and a normally OK amount of caffeine could still cause an overdose. See GoodRx's article and this Healthline article.
Great question, and I'm glad you asked. Everyone should learn this. Seriously, everyone. Being able to recognize and treat an overdose of any common drug could save a life – either your own, or someone else's. This is exactly why I learned how to administer Narcan and why I encourage everyone I know to do so as well – and while caffeine overdoses may be less dangerous than opioid overdoses, caffeine is also a much more common drug, so your chances of someday encountering someone who is having an overdose (or having one yourself!) are probably pretty high.
So, how do you treat a caffeine overdose?
1) If you think you are having a caffeine overdose, stop consuming caffeine.
This seems kind of obvious, but lots of things that you might not expect contain caffeine, and if you've already had too much, even low amounts in addition can seriously exacerbate your symptoms. Some key things that people might miss include: Starbucks refreshers (did you know that those are fairly caffeinated?), most sodas, tea (less caffeine than coffee, but it's still absolutely caffeinated), kombucha (it's made with tea, and the caffeine doesn't go away when it ferments), chocolate, anything with guarana, matcha, or yerba mate in the ingredient list, a lot of sports drinks and protein bars, and a big one that a lot of people find surprising – decaf (the decaffeination process removes most of the caffeine, but not all of it, and so even though it's safe to drink for most people who "can't have caffeine", you should definitely avoid it if you are already actively having an overdose). Similarly, avoid other stimulants for the rest of the day. If you take stimulant medications for ADHD, for example, don't take your normally scheduled meds while you are overdosing on a different stimulant. The effects can stack.
2) Drink water.
Caffeine is a diuretic, and dehydration can exacerbate overdose symptoms. Additionally, if the overdose that you are having is severe, you may throw up or experience diarrhea. In theory, even better than drinking water would be drinking something like gatorade or pedialyte to replenish your lost electrolytes... but watch out because, well, see above. Lots of electrolyte sports drinks contain caffeine, and you absolutely do not want to make your symptoms worse by piling on more of the thing your body is desperately trying to clear.
3) Monitor your symptoms.
Most caffeine overdoses are not very dangerous, and will resolve themselves without medical intervention. However, you need to be on the lookout for symptoms that indicate a severe overdose, especially if the overdose is happening to someone vulnerable, such as a child, or someone who has a preexisting heart condition. Especially be on the lookout for: chest pain, seizures, tingling sensations like pins-and-needles, and difficulty breathing. If any of those symptoms are present, or if the person who is having the overdose has a serious preexisting condition that could put them in imminent risk of a heart attack, then you need to...
4) Call poison control and/or go to the ER.
Depending on the severity of your overdose, you may be prescribed activated charcoal, and in extreme cases, you may need to have your stomach pumped. At this level of symptoms, you should not be trying to treat the overdose at home; you should be getting seen by a medical professional. Caffeine overdoses are very rarely fatal, but when they're serious, they can absolutely require emergency medical treatment. If you have serious overdose symptoms, do not delay going to the hospital because "it's just caffeine" and you feel like you should be able to ride it out at home. I promise you that no one is going to think that you're silly for coming in for such a "minor" drug; if your symptoms are serious, it is absolutely serious enough for you to go to the ER, regardless of whether you overdosed by getting dosed with concentrated caffeine powder or pills, or by drinking a single extra venti latte.

It’s wild to me to see transvestigator conspiracy theories online that could be so easily explained by natural human variation. That woman has a deep voice? Yeah, sometimes they do. A woman has broad shoulders?? Maybe she plays rugby or hits the gym a fuckton. There’s a “bulge” in her tight pants?? Maybe her vulva is just fat. All the “markers” of trans woman that transvestigators use to harass any woman aren’t even things unique to trans women.
Transphobes talk about women like they’re Barbies. Have you forgotten the existence of cameltoe? Tiny boobs? Narrow hips? Broad shoulders? Why do you think choirs have altos and not just sopranos? What do you think female athletes look like? Do you think a woman that lifts weights and plays contact sports will look like a 90s supermodel? At what point in history did we collectively forget that human bodies have natural variability???

Suddenly, he’s on his own
Crows are scary They
use tools
Can be taught to speak (like parrots)
Have huge brains for birds
like seriously their brain-to-body size ratio is equal to that of a chimpanzee
They vocalize anger, sadness, or happiness in response to things
they are scary smart at solving puzzles
some crows stay with their mates until one of them dies
they can remember faces
SIDENOTE HERE BECAUSE HOLY SHIT. They did an experiment where these guys wore masks and some of them fucked with crows. Pretty soon the crows recognized the masks = douchebag. But the nice guys with masks they left alone. THEN, OH WE’RE NOT DONE, NO SIR crows that WEREN’T EVEN IN THE EXPERIMENT AND NEVER SAW THE MASK BEFORE knew about mask-dudes and attacked them on sight. THEY PASSED ON THE FUCKING INFORMATION TO THEIR CROW BUDDIES.
They remember places where crows were killed by farmers and change their migration patterns.
Guys I’m really scared of crows now. (q)
Yeah but have you seen this
A colleague of my dad’s lives next to a lake, and looked out the window one morning to see a duck trapped in the ice. A crow swooped down. “Oh hell,” she thought, expecting carnage, because crows are opportunists. But the crow chipped at the ice with its beak until the duck was free.
Idk of this counts but a few crows saved me from a magpie swooping attack once ,they’re bros who can tell when magpies are being unreasonable and need to chill
I love crows so damn much. When I was fifteen, I hit a pretty serious bout of depression, to the point I was in my room for months. Well, a family of crows made a nest in a tree outside my window. There were two parents and two chicks. One chick was healthy and strong. One was weak, and had a caw like something being strained. It sounded more like a rooster crowing and so my parents jokingly named him ‘Buck’.Well… months passed and Buck’s sibling was taught to fly. His parents focused on the sibling because the sibling was strong. The father stayed behind to try and teach Buck, but I saw him try to fly, fail, and crash to the floor. His father helped him back up into the tree.
Every day, I would watch Buck from my window until one day I opened it and started talking to him. He was small and gangly and he couldn’t caw right. His feathers were all over the place and I felt a kinship. So I made a deal with him. I told him that if he could do it, if he could fly, then I could find the strength to get up. Well… near the end of the season, after talking with him every day, I finally saw him get out of the nest. He went to the edge of his branch, braced himself, and jumped… and just before he hit the ground, he soared back up into the sky. I cheered harder than I ever had before.
That winter, Buck left the area. I was crestfallen. I felt like I’d lost a friend. But I was so damn proud of him.
Cut to the next spring? I’m walking up the driveway one day when suddenly I hear a sound… a broken caw. I look up, and Buck is sitting in a tree above my head. He stared at me and puffed his feathers, then hopped down in front of me and cawed again. I was so damn thrilled, and I told him how proud I was of him. He ruffled his feathers and then soared off into his old tree.
That summer? I heard two broken caws. One from Buck… and one from his chick.
Cut to ten years later? We have a family of crows who all have a very distinct caw and they come here and spend every spring, summer, and fall on our property. Buck still greets me every spring.
that last reply made me wanna cry. that’s so beautiful.
Don’t forget the Russian Crow SLEDDING DOWN A ROOF not once, but twice.
this one morning i kept hearing really loud caws, i remember it was like 5am, LIKE REALLY LOUD AND ANNOYING AND AGGRESSIVE, so loud that i could hear it through a closed window, and i eventually went outside to check it out. there was a crow on my front lawn, it had an injury on its head and couldn’t fly and there were two other crows circling right above it, and they were cawing like mad.
i tried to get close and take a better look and one of them dived super low and tried to attack me. so i went back in the house and chopped some sliced raw meat and tossed it at him from a distance.
a few more times later, very soon after, they could tell i was trying to help, and did not attack me. i was “allowed” to walk up close and pick him up, he couldn’t drink water properly so i had to dip my finger in a bowl and stick it in his mouth.
i did this few times a day and it went on for about a week before he disappeared, i thought he recovered and left, but he came back the next day and lands on me, and i see him around the block quite often, and he would come sit on my shoulder for a few minutes and then fly away again. i feel like i’ve adopted a son.
Best birbs !!
your son is Beautiful and Strong
every time I see this post it has different crow stories and every time I reblog it again because all crow stories are good stories
Like, I wouldn’t want to be on bad terms with a crow, but they are a really smart animal, they aren’t scary You just want to be nice to them because they will know and they will remember, and they will pay you back if you treat them a certain way.
As a side note, I volunteered at a rehab (Hope for Wildlife), where they were rehabbing a crow with a broken wing–who was named Russell Crow. He kept pulling his bandage off so a sleeve was cut off some old clothing and put on him like a little sweater.
!!!!
I don’t think I’ll ever not reblog this. This posts makes me cry and smile at the same time.
He’s so handsome!!
I would trust a crow with my life

Happy pride month everyone always remember that the sinkhole has an ecosystem large enough to house not only insects but likely several species of small birds or mammals
Demons and monsters that torture people because they feed on human suffering are so dumb. People are suffering everywhere my guy go literally any place and take a deep whiff.
Monster that feeds on suffering becomes a professional caretaker for people with chronic pain and terminal illnesses. They can't change the fact that these people are suffering, but they help a bit and in the meantime they're fat and happy off that Sweet Sweet ambient pain in the air.
Two towns over there's a demon lord trying to get their cult to abduct people for torture, but they keep getting stopped by heroes and the like, so they're barely scraping by. Meanwhile Belogarth the Registered PCA is chowing down on back pain, medication side effects and looming mortality for eight hours a day and has become the most powerful demon on earth without realizing it.
"But don't their clients feel weird knowing that they're feeding off their suffering?" No they think it's hilarious and they're real shits about it.
Finally a medical professional who believes that they are in pain. Because the fucker is actively chowing down on your agony. Not only am I going to get treated by them I'm going to invite all of my chronically ill friends to come as well.
Turns out if you treat the pain then the humans will bring you more humans who are suffering. It's like a restaurant where the waiter is so impressed by your ability to eat food they're giving you more on the house
They say things like "well, it's a real feast day for Belogarth today!" and "if my meds are held up at customs again I'm gonna put Belogarth in a food coma" and Belogarth is the one feeling weird about it
Gimmick stamps
i think that all the people who argue about gender by saying "the woke left cant even define a woman" need to get hit with the "who are you" question by a buddhist monk. no, thats your name, who are you. no thats your profession, who are YOU. no you fucking idiot thats your species, who are YOUU. dumb bitch u cant even define yourself
see this guy gets it
"Gender is a shell game. What is a man? Whatever a woman isn't. What is a woman? Whatever a man is not. Tap on it and it's hollow. Look under the shells: it's not there."
Naomi Alderman, The Power
