suicide deeefinitely isn’t encouraged in the trans community in the same way it deeeeefinitely isn’t encouraged in pro ana spaces and no quite honestly i may never shut up about that fuck off forever
and the way pro ana spaces thrived was by a collective behavior of those involved in it desperately telling those who spoke out against it that it wasn’t happening, that it’s just a health conscious life style to make, etc etc etc
i don’t get how in the big year of 2023 this is what my culture is still struggling with
Whenever anyone wants to discuss the surgical aspect of this issue, I always ask them if they’d consider giving an already severely malnourished and underweight anorexic teen liposuction to be “weight affirming” and they obviously find that extremely shocking and offensive but cannot understand how the same principle parlays into calling surgery a cure for any other mental illness
if you don’t give depressed kids lobotomies you’re literally sentencing them to death……….
The problem is that they don’t view dysphoria as a medical condition, but rather a natural signal of their identity. They don’t see their issues as the same as these various mental illnesses & disorders
The actual problem is that they managed to convince the rest of the world of that. My childhood best friend became anorexic when we were 14, and cut off everyone who tried to rationalise with her and convince her she was underweight. I remember vividly the comments she’d make, from ‘I’m naturally like this. This is just who I am and this is my healthy weight’ to ‘you all just want to make me fat and ugly and stop me from being healthy’ to ‘I literally feel the best I’ve ever felt physically, I’ve never been healthier’ to ‘I will literally kill myself if you force me to gain weight’ to ‘I’m not sick, you just don’t want me to be myself/achieve my potential’ etc etc etc. It was several years of hell. One girl we knew told her she looked good and ‘affirmed’ her. I tore that girl to shreds, and her justification? ‘She’s happy, just let her be. Why do you want to make her feel bad?’ I haven’t spoken to this specific person in over 10 years and I still have the same rage every time I remember that.
Anyway, the problem is everyone else catering to and ‘affirming’ dysphoria as natural and normal rather than a mental illness, and promoting extremely unhealthy and damaging fixes for it.
OH gyns if you ever want evidence of tech bros thinking they're geniuses but being just.... SO dumb. One of my managers yesterday got in a very impassioned argument with a coworker about how reading should be phased out and replaced with AI-translation of words into speech and video. He says it's more efficient and there's no reason for us to know how to read.
He also said a painting was "more efficient" than a poem when said coworker (a history and philosophy major) brought up things like poetry where audio loses information like the structure
As someone in the animation industry, the amount of men (mainly tech bros) who have no clue about how animation works but are convinced that they know exactly where and how AI will be implemented is astonishing. Don't even get me started on the tech bros who think AI writing is good enough for books/screenplays. They are too disconnected from the artistic process to be able to imagine any practical use for AI, and too arrogant to see that their "solutions" often times require more work to implement while yielding worse results.
I see posts go by periodically about how modern audiences are impatient or unwilling to trust the creator. And I agree that that's true. What the posts almost never mention, though, is that this didn't happen in a vacuum. Audiences have had their patience and trust beaten out of them by the popular media of the past few decades.
J J Abrams is famous for making stories that raise questions he never figures out how to answer. He's also the guy with some weird story about a present he never opened and how that's better than presents you open--failing to see that there's a difference between choosing not to open a present and being forbidden from opening one.
You've got lengthy media franchises where installments undo character development or satisfying resolutions from previous installments. Worse, there are media franchises with "trilogies" that are weird slap fights between the makers of each installment.
You've got wildly popular TV shows that end so poorly and unsatisfyingly that no one speaks of them again.
On top of that, a lot of the media actively punishes people for engaging thoughtfully with it. Creators panic and change their stories if the audience properly reacts to foreshadowing. Emotional parts of storytelling are trampled by jokes. Shocking the audience has become the go to, rather than providing a solid story.
Of course audiences have gotten cynical and untrusting! Of course they're unwilling to form their own expectations of what's coming! Of course they make the worst assumptions based on what's in front of them! The media they've been consuming has trained them well.
Remember when Jeff Bezos, who is worth 181 billion USD donated 690k to stopping Australian fires? Yeah, me too.
McKenzie Scott is literally proof that these fuckers can donate HUGE sums of money to EVERYTHING and still live a comfortable life.... But nooO someone HAS to justify the pitifully small donations the richest men on earth make every year for their tax write-off
Some also important context (this is June 2021, after her second round of grants was announced), as well:
[image description: tweet from Dan Price, the Seattle business owner who doesn’t take a massive salary and pays everybody at his company really well: “Two years ago, she had $36 billion. Since then, she has donated $8 billion - more than anyone in the world. She is now worth $60 billion. I think people struggle to understand just how fast wealth accumulates for the super-rich. She literally can't give it away fast enough.”.]
She should bankroll unionization efforts at Amazon; really piss in the old man’s cornflakes.
me: the alt right pipeline does not exist in a vacuum and some 'victims' were not such great people to begin with and just found comfort in justifications for their already existing hatred
comments: what if a 6 year old boy with depression watched ben shapiro and became a fascist and he was dying of cancer and his ONLY WISH was to kill a woman. would you truly not empathize?
I think if a studio exec says they want to force you to starve to death so you’ll be made to accept garbage wages, you should crush them in a hydraulic press incredibly slowly
Like the fact that rich people have gotten to the point where they think they can just be like “oh yeah I’m literally trying to kill you” without fear of repercussions is beyond infuriating. They need to know what it feels like to be beaten to death by hammers.
CGI animators should unionize next. normally, their jobs would be too precarious to strike, since studios would replace them without a second thought, but if it's part of this larger general film strike, they might finally have meaningful power to better their working conditions
if CGI animators unionized, it would kill the MCU. straight up. the the entire business model is built on exploiting CGI animators
Some of yall be like "this woman is talking about radfem theory while wearing a full face of make up so I don't respect her" or "she's a hypocrite" and as someone who never wears makeup (and loves it) Imma be honest: I don't care. And some of yall may not want to hear this, but that kind of mindset helps no one, and especially does not help the movement. It just makes you come off as judgy and nasty. Normie women dipping their toes into radical feminism should be met with support not vitriol and condescension. They're not going to be perfect and check all the boxes on the first try or maybe even the tenth try. Ffs theyre learning. What will keep them coming back and eventually get them to challenge their thoughts around makeup is how welcoming the community is.
Their words are still valuable and I appreciate anyone talking positively about radical feminism, but I feel deeply confused about it. It’s like watching someone talk about the importance of accepting your homosexuality as good and natural while admitting they attend an hour of conversion therapy every morning.
Are you naturally this stupid or is it a choice
Okay this might be an inappropriate comparison but I feel like it’s so telling of the root of these criticisms. Do y’all feel no sympathy for this hypothetical person? I wanted to kill myself for a long time for being gay, and I wanted to fix myself or become celibate so that I just wouldn’t have to deal with it, but that doesn’t mean I was advocating for other people to do the same. My little sister came out as bisexual to me and the fact that my kind of self-hatred might affect her too was horrifying to me, but it didn’t make it go away. The internalized oppression women and gay people face will fuck with our perceptions of ourself, plain and simple. I’d rather a gay person take the step to say hey, homosexuality is a good thing, even if they can’t accept it in themselves, then to have them never try to fight the things they’re internalizing from the world around them. Same with any woman whose beginning to question the patriarchy around her.
“landlords are bad because they don’t work” no. landlords are bad because they use the justice system and the police to render innocent people homeless. landlords are bad because they put barriers between living human beings and having shelter. landlords are bad because they hoard wealth and resources while their community suffers
enough with the ableist horseshit. nobody needs to work 40h a week to deserve to live
y’all are like “I’m anti landlord” but still believe people should work themselves to death to pay for shelter that would otherwise be free just because a landlord said so
you’re not anti landlord you just hate disabled people and “lazy” people that you think you’re better than. you aren’t.
sometimes I randomly think about the time a girl posted in this girls only Facebook group I’m in telling everyone how she broke up with her boyfriend and he lied saying that he lost the spare key she gave him, only to then break into her apartment when she wasn’t home and steal the cat they’d adopted while they were together, but then he denied having done this and she didn’t really have proof that he took the cat since he wouldn’t let her come into his place and look for it. And then another girl saw this post and knew her ex-boyfriend, and she was like “girl. I used to hook up with your mans back in xxxx and I still have his number. If you want, I’ll hit him up and get him to invite me back to his place and see if your cat’s there.” And the OP was like “bet.”
So this woman hit up homie dog, asked him out for drinks, went home with him, slept with him, and then woke up in the middle of the night and TOOK THE CAT. Like she had only said that she would confirm if the cat was there but then she took it upon herself to steal this woman’s cat back. Like she full on Trojan horsed this man and then hit up homegirl like “I got the goods. Where you wanna meet.” And then the two of them posted a photo of them together with the cat to the group.
And I just think women supporting women is so beautiful.
Kasparov had once described Polgár as a "circus puppet" and asserted that women chess players should stick to having children. Polgár called the game, "One of the most remarkable moments of my career. Polgár thus became one of the players who have beaten Kasparov. The game was historic as it was the first time in chess history that a female player beat the world's No. 1 player in competitive play.
Interesting how so many people will say “It’s important to separate the art from the artist.” when they want to support male paedophiles, domestic abusers, rapists, etc. But when a female writer states a scientifically proven fact, people will call for public book burnings.
…and photoshop her face into porn (Gail Dines), stalk her across the country (Rebecca Watson), accuse her of lying about being raped (Andrea Dworkin), or issue sexually explicit death threats about how she should be shot in the C*nt (JK Rowling, literally half of radblr). All of which are symptoms of misogyny that no male writer has ever faced.
People who believe that small children are proof that gender roles are natural are really on a whole other level.
A young child, using words she learned purely by mimicking the way others speak: I want to be a mommy when I grow up.
Y’all absolute Mensa candidates: Wow. This child is a blank slate. Completely unaffected by society. Guess lady-brains truly are the only explanation here, science deniers.
Babies cry with an accent within a day of being born, and can even observe sounds while they’re still in the womb. There’s no stage of life where people aren’t already affected by socialisation, everyone who believes that nature can truly be separated from nurture is naive as fuck.
hate hate hate how people act like a woman who doesnt wear revealing clothes must not be comfortable with her body. hence the push to treat wearing a bikini as a fat woman (or even as just a regular non-fitness-model woman) as a victory. no one is telling men that they need to wear speedoes to show they love themselves.
Confidence for women = the confidence to objectify yourself even when you don’t fit into the tiny box of what a good object is supposed to look like.
Yes, it takes confidence, because you might be ridiculed for being an imperfect object. The false confidence comes from stating to others: No, my body is a perfectly good and valuable sex object, no matter what you think.
It takes confidence to be boring. Not to look desirable. To focus on things other than if you’re fuckable to men.
It takes confidence to be half naked in a hot weather but not in a sexy way. It takes confidence to wear ugly shorts and no shirt or bra while being hairy and to not wearing any make-up.
It was never about if you actually were comfortable with your body. It’s about whether you’re comfortable with offering it to men as an object.
Is it just me or is this comment insanely funny
LMAO op turned off reblogs but this interaction is so funny to me
