Tourettes Awareness Month, 2026 - Day 14: thoughts on how Tourettes is represented in the media

Personally, I feel that Tourettes has long been misrepresented and taken the piss out of in a lot of media. A lot of misinformation and stereotypes have also been spread through various forms of media.

It's saddening considering how much of a detrimental impact the condition has on people.

However, recently a film called I Swear came out and, personally, I think it's the best representation out there currently. It really captures the experiences that can come along with having this condition. And if you don't have Tourettes, it's still a quality film, and is very relatable, especially if you're neurodivergent, disabled, or ever felt like the odd one out.

There are other films and books too, which I've enjoyed personally - such as The Road Within, Motherless Brooklyn, Front of Class. But I Swear is definitely the best representation in the media.

The media really needs to get its act together when reporting and creating about Tourettes. It's a complex condition that needs truth and care, not more stereotypes, misconceptions, and humiliation.

My favourite of this trope is from The Scottish Play where our protag is told: “No man of woman born” can kill him.

Only 10-15% of people with Tourette’s have coprolalia tics. Coprolalia is not a required symptom for the diagnosis of Tourette syndrome. The majority of people with this condition don’t swear. Coprolalia can also be present in other neurological conditions, or exist as a symptom on its own. Tourette’s ≠ coprolalia, and coprolalia ≠ Tourette’s.
