Elena Ferrante, “Writing That Urges,” Incidental Inventions
When a fic doesn’t fit my head canons but it’s well-written
#he wouldn't fucking say that but i'm getting kind of attached to the guy you invented who did say that
Becoming a writer is great because now you have a hobby that haunts you whenever you don’t have time to do it
someone I follow on the bird app just announced they’re starting a very exclusive private fic server because they and a bunch of other people want to talk about how much they love the fics they’re reading, and as an author can I just say that a really great place to talk about a fic you love is in the comments for that fic
I understand that people are trying to create safe spaces, but as the number of comments that I get on my fics dwindles with each passing year, knowing these spaces exist where my fics are being discussed, places that I am excluded from, makes me want to write fic LESS
I mean I guess who cares, right, because if I stop writing, there’s 10,000 other people that will continue…but if you participate in a fic “book club” server and you say nice things there about a fic you loved, maybe copy and paste that into a comment on AO3?
the only thing fanfic writers are asking for in return for hours of hard work is attention. please don’t rob us of the one thing that we hope for when we hit “post”
this is directly related to this post I made about how fanfic authors now are treated like content mills, and not like valued members of a creative community who thrive on interaction. for the past decade, we’ve watched the fandom ecosystem disrupted over and over, as NSFW fan artists seek safety by putting their work behind paywalls, and self-conscious fic readers squirrel away their feelings in invite-only communities
an easy way to do your part to fight against the evils perpetrated by social media is to leave a comment on a fanfic you love
but don’t take my word for it – here are some responses that my fellow authors have left on this post:
The fact I had a fic that was fairly beloved and NO ONE commented on it because it was all being done in a fucking book club server made me want to scream.
I haven’t updated that fic in two years now.
I cannot express enough how imperative it is to show the writer how much you love their work. The comments don’t have to be novels themselves - even just an “I loved this so much!” Or keyboard smashing works wonders to keep the writer going. Please, we need to bring back supporting writers and artists now more than ever!!!
PLUS, plus…if people are talking about fic in private servers and not telling the authors, those people get the idea that the fic writer is “big.” Meanwhile the fic writer is sitting there, staring at a Google doc, struggling to find the motivation to write the next chapter, with 2 comments on a 20k fic.
They don’t feel big. They don’t feel appreciated. They don’t feel motivated. And they might stop writing or shelve their fic, never knowing that people were loving it in private.
Honestly this is the same for social media threads or even on this very app. If you can, tag the author. A lot of us have our socials in our AO3 profiles.
Feedback is lovely. Knowing what people like, what people enjoy in our writing, it’s so encouraging.
IF YOU BELONG TO A BOOK CLUB SERVER, THE CHANGE CAN START WITH YOU:
MAKE IT A COMMUNITY NORM TO GUSH ABOUT A FIC AND THEN COPY AND PASTE THAT SHIT INTO THE COMMENT BOX.
ENCOURAGE AND CELEBRATE SUCH BEHAVIOR AMONG MEMBERS.
GIVE BACK TO THE AUTHORS WHO HAVE GIVEN YOU SO MUCH
Like, it’s not even really about getting “repaid” so much as it is that we want to be part of the conversation and community too. That’s why we wrote and posted the fic - we want to have those discussions about characterization and omg that one moment in the last episode and etc. The fic is our opener. And when no one says anything where we can see, how can we be part of the discussion and community we want so badly?
you can pry starting sentences with 'and' or 'but' out of my cold, dead hands
You will not use AI to get ideas for your story. You will lie on the floor and have wretched visions like god intended
writers when they’re proofreading their works for the 34th time *find zero mistakes, there’s no typo, no grammatical error. everything looks good. hit the post button*
writers when they’re reading said works after they’ve been published like proud parents *find 52 mistakes at first glance, 38 typos and 14 grammatical errors with a bunch of inconsistencies and plot holes*
hey writeblr is this anything
I really think everyone needs to truly internalize this:
Fictional characters are objects.
They are not people. You cannot "objectify" them, because they have no personhood to be deprived of. They have no humanity to be erased. You cannot "disrespect" them, because they are not real.
I know this has good intentions, so I will just add the "how you treat them, even as objects of fiction, can speak about your own character, be careful out there"
Your addition is actually completely antithetical to my message. It is literally the opposite of what I am conveying.
Stop telling people to encourage the cop inside their head.
How you treat fictional characters, given they are entirely objects of fiction, does NOT necessarily speak to your own character, and you do not need to be "careful".
It is not dangerous to imagine dark things happening to fictional characters. It does not mean you are secretly a bad person. It does not mean you unconsciously want to hurt people in real life. It is not a "slippery slope" to doing bad things to people in real life. You cannot damage your brain or turn yourself into a bad person by consuming "dark" fanfic.
I can write tentacle noncon of my favorite character all day long and be a fierce anti-sexual assault advocate in real life because what I do in my head is not the same thing as what I do in real life.
Stop aspiring and start writing. If you’re writing, you’re a writer.

FANFICTION ALERT ▴━━ introducing creature agendas !
Hermione’s startled gasp draws his attention, and Harry turns to find her standing frozen with fear, metal clenched tightly in shaking hands, as the shackled beast opens its great maw and an orange glow starts from within, growing brighter and brighter until, with one hoarse roar, it unleashes a jet of fire at them.
Harry’s mind goes blank, his body moving before his brain has the chance to process what is happening. He wastes no time at all in throwing himself at Hermione who hasn’t budged from her spot, Ron’s frantic, “‘Mione!” sounding in the background. But in his haste to reach her, Harry stumbles over a loose rock in the ground and lands hard on his knee, ripping a hole into the knee of his pants and scraping the skin, even as his hands unerringly find Hermione’s shoulders to push her out of the way of the flames.
She hits the ground with a groan, her fearful gaze locked on Harry just as the flames reach him, swallowing him whole, her piercing scream echoing off the rocky walls, matching Ron’s cry of shock.
Orangish red fills Harry’s vision, the stifling wave of heat settling around him like a cloak set aflame, blurring the edges of his vision until it finally whites out. He blinks rapidly, trying to relieve the stinging in his eyes. (It hurts.) Merlin does it hurt, the feel of the flames licking at his skin a blistering sensation teasing his nerve endings into a frenzy of tingles and itches and stings, a hint of the pain and destruction to come—pain that soon turns excruciating.
It radiates through him, not unlike the Cruciatus he was once subjected to, threatening to cripple him as a shroud of inky blackness lurks at the edges of his mind, so thick he can barely tell his up from his down.
Until, between breaths, the black spots flickering in his eyes finally dissolve, and he’s suddenly met with the awe-inspiring sight of a gargantuan skeletal dragon looming over him like some great, insurmountable mountain, with thick, bony wings stretched as far as the eye can see, pitch-black and tipped with a pair of sickles, from whence coils of shadows writhe around them, beckoning him forward.
“Greetings, Harry James Potter,” says the being, several voices overlapping Their unearthly, whispery-soft tone as They lower Their head until They are at eye-level with him.
Harry stares in stupefied astonishment at the sheer size of the thing, hardly able to hold Their opaque gaze without flinching. Their eyesockets are twice the size of dinner plates, as black as the skeletal frame They don proudly—and just as unnerving, the ancient intelligence in Their gaze as unfathomable as the deepest, most unexplored parts of space humankind yearns to touch but never will. Shadows lovingly cling to Them, all but sinking into Their bones with every minute shift of Their body as They continue to regard him with some foreign emotion akin to familiarity, an aura of fondness surrounding Them that is as surprising as it is compelling.

you know that expression, "dance like no one is watching you?"
try writing like no one is going to read it
it's easier to let yourself go and just enjoy the process of creation when you aren't also playing 6 dimensional chess with your insecurities and anxieties
write because you have fun writing and if you never post it anywhere that's totally fine because you enjoyed your time with the process
