and really i think the most perfect way to explore rocky's abandonment trauma and struggles with reintegration on erid is to make him chronically unable to thrum.
not just academic thrumming (because there's no way that a species would evolve gestalt intelligence without it bleeding into every cultural and interpersonal aspect of their society) but even on a smaller, purely social or familial level. he just... can't. maybe it's the kind of cognitive skill you need to keep using so it doesn't atrophy, and rocky had to survive alone without another member of his species for 50 years, maybe it's a complication of his PTSD from the blip-a days, where his brain shuts down any attempt to connect his consciousness to others to protect the rest of the group from his traumatic memories.
but just imagine being part of an intelligent species so hypersocial and tight-knit that you habitually blend your own sense of consciousness and self together as a form of problem solving, spending half a century in space in complete isolation with only the corpses of your crew for company, returning home by a miracle and you just.
you can't. you can't do it anymore. they thrum, and they call for you, and you try but it feels like there's a soundproof wall between you and everyone else, or you thrum back and the second the contact lands it feels like they're trying to crack your carapace in half.
oh, by the way, your alien best friend is starving to death. he's just about to run out of his food supplies and everything organic on your planet is deadly toxic to him. the only hope for him is synthesizing the nutrients he needs from scratch, so your people assembled the second biggest science thrum in history to do just that as a sign of gratitude and they would really appreciate the input from the human expert who spent next to 4 years in direct proximity with said alien. too bad the stupid crystals in your brain can't get their shit together even for two seconds to save your best friend's life.
I'm sure rocky only feels normal emotions about this.
He doesn’t even know, and he doesn’t want to.
I don't go here but I feel like "It's a metaphor. Don't force it to do the work of a fact." is a great statement about literature and fan-content in general.
The shape of love
This is on paper btw
tonight it is the end of the world. i know. you are allowed to feel this way. but tomorrow morning, you will wake up, the sun will rise and you will drink your tea. and you will be okay. the world will keep spinning regardless of the feelings that are overwhelming you. allow yourself to breathe and take in the world around you. it is okay. you are safe.

i am so absolutely utterly scared that my insane grandfather in his 80s who runs miles every morning is going to leave me a bird in his will and i am especially scared he is going to leave me a large cockatoo named "captain hook". hook has been trying to make me his child bride since i was like 6 years old and every time i see him again which has only been a couple times with decades in between hook is like "you. it's always been you. ever since you were born i've known we were meant to be" captain hook you are a bird and i am a LESBIAN and i don't WANT an eternal sentinel captain HOOK!!!!!!!
WAS TOLD AT CHRISTMAS DINNER THAT THIS IS INDEED REAL, AND THAT I AM IN THE WILL TO RECIEVE THE BIRD!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER 👏 STOP 👏 BEINGSCARED 👏
okay well that's actually even worse than i thought thank you DAD
LOL!
I used to work with a young man (30's), who inherited a large parrot from his aunt.
He took the parrot in for its scheduled Vet check, and came back to work all depressed.
Turns out the Vet told him the parrot was relatively young, and could live for another 80 years.
Eventually, he worked himself out of his depression about the parrot. He was a beautiful bird, and very vocal.
Heard a car horn today that was tuned to a fifth. Fucked up, kinda delightful
I want people to understand how jarring this was. Most car horns are either a single tone or two tones somewhere in the neighborhood of a minor third apart:
Pretty normal rush hour sounds, yeah? But this thing sounded something like this:
Fucked up! Didn't even realize it was a car horn at first, I didn't know what the fuck it was! It was weird as hell!
Getting honked at by the final boss of an N64 game
ARGH!
In the apartment complex I used to live in, we had a new neighbor move in, who drove one of those super sized monster pick up trucks (obviously over compensating for something missing in his life).
This guy had an after market car horn that produced the following (all in succession) (that went off every time he used his automatic key fob to unlock/lock his truck), or if something disturbed his truck (we lived within a mile of an airport - jets flying too low routinely set off car alarms in our parking lot):
Regular car horn honk.
police car siren.
ambulance siren.
fire truck siren.
air raid siren.
And, he parked his truck right in front of our living room window.
After about the 20th time of his alarm going off within three days, I went out immediately armed with my hammer, a piece of paper and a pen.
I wrote a note that unless this noise stopped, I would smash his truck with my hammer. Drew a line around the hammer on the paper. Stuck it under his windshield wiper (v-e-r-y carefully so as to not set of that $#@^% $#%* alarm).
I called the managers office again and complained about the truck, and advised I left a note.
The guy ended up parking his truck on the OTHER side of our parking area. He must have adjusted the alarm going off, because I rarely heard it afterwards.

Baby cuttlefish attempting to camouflage for the very first time
I recently learned that the distinction between even- and odd-toed ungulates is not the number of toes they have, but the number of toes on which they bear weight (cetaceans being a somewhat controversial exception). This implies that some ungulates might have an even number of toes but bear weight on an odd number of them, or vice versa. so I checked:
Equines (left) only have one toe, so of course it’s weight-bearing. Pigs, bovines, caprines, and deer have two toes they bear weight on and two they don’t, making the number even either way.
Giraffids and camelids (which are even-toed) have two toes and bear weight on both of them. So far, everyone has the same odd or even number of toes no matter how you count them.
Hippos have four toes and bear weight on all of them. Rhinos have three toes and bear weight on all of them. So who’s the exception that makes the weight-bearing distinction necessary?
It’s the tapir. Just this one genus. afaik this individual is alive and well in a zoo in Japan, I just picked this picture to show that the front feet have four toes and the back feet have three. what a rulebreaker
your strengths are harder to see than your weaknesses because the problems you're good at solving don't appear as problems, because you're so good at handling them before they become problems... unlike the relatively rare problem that becomes a crisis, which demands undue attention. it's sort of like a reverse survivorship bias. the problems that become noticed as problems, the moments where you notice your capacity has a gap, are only the ones that aren't cut off at the pass by your strength and capability, before they become problems. so if all you focus on is problems then all you'll see is your weaknesses. which isn't accurate
it’s nothing that 100 house centipedes can’t fix
Jfc that kitty parade music justmakes it hilarious
I can’t believe this is an actual event that has taken place.
with the music that might actually be the most surreal thing i’ve ever watched
I..don’t know why, but this is really satisfying.
someone accused me of feigning a sexual attraction to spiders for clout. there's easier ways to get clout, man.....
Someone once called my 22 minute hand sewn 18th century buttonhole tutorial video "Empty, clout driven content" so I think some people will just say anything.
Had a soul-searing moment where I sat unblinking trying to figure out what a "hand sewn 18th century butthole" could be for, until I read that again.
