Where do you live that you donât have dandelions?
we have dandelions EVERYWHERE, they are basically our State Weed, it is absolutely impossible that my mom has never interacted with a dandelion before, this requires further investigation
So after extensive interrogation I have an update:
my mom is in fact aware that dandelions exist. she temporarily forgot the name and there was some miscommunication.

she is familiar with this flower. she knows the name of this flower. she declines to believe, however, that these are also dandelions
she does not believe these are the same plant. I tried to explain, and she thought I was either misinformed or lying. so I asked her what exactly did she think the yellow ones were called?
she answered, with complete confidence: Daffodils.

I understand that most normal functioning brains need regular engagement to maintain a bond. Absence doesnât diminish my affection. My silence isnât neglect or disinterest. Fandom is weird now. Itâs becoming less trusting and friendly, and the Orwellian surveillance issues that are currently running rampant in the USA and UK have bled over into fandom spaces.
Iâd read the articles that young people have no privacy and have become so accustomed to it that they enact on themselves. Abstractly I knew this and had accepted it, but itâs only now that Iâm seeing it become a major issues.
Obviously part of the problem is I need to become a trusted member of my new fandom. But fandom in general is becoming far more hostile to privacy than even just 5 years ago.
Iâve had to leave 3 servers that want to do age verification. And this is new. Not even 5 years ago when I started zines ppl just turning 18-20 were far more receptive to the ideas espoused by us older folks about not being surveilled. But now it almost feels like they *want* to be surveilled.
Theyâve become so used to it from tiktok and their government that they crave it. Iâd write a dystopia about it but unfortunately what even is there to say that hasnât already been said?
If youâre 18-22 now and youâre reading this and willing to listen without immediately calling me suspicious: this is not normal. Age verification will not keep you safe and will not keep minors safe either. It will only lead to the normalization of further surveillance and erosion of your privacy.
I know it can be an unwieldy text especially if youâre not used to reading academic sources, but go read The Panopticon. Watch V for Vendetta or read the comic, read 1984. Watch The Lives of Others and understand the ways this modern era is not so different from the Stasi in the film.

I am a loud & proud union organizer and a disabled trans person, which is fairly obvious from about three seconds spent on my blog. I know this is a deeply American thing to say but I am begging everyone to stay the fuck away from military recruiters. Especially high school kids. You are going to be seeing an unholy amount of them in schools or around schools or literally anywhere kids are known to congregate. THIS INCLUDES ALL FORMS OF ROTC. Stay the fuck away from military recruiters. As someone whoâs familiar with entirely too many branches through entirely too many friends and family, including my partner, recruiters are authorized to say literally any fucking thing they think will make you sign on that line. They cannot and will not deliver on those promises. They need bodies for the war theyâre pretending is only now starting up again. Thatâs all you are. A body. Stay the FUCK away from the military.

My brother enlisted coming out of high school. I was in high school the next year. He bombed out of basic training PDQ and was back at home and SERIOUSLY fucked up from it and never actually recovered, I donât think.
So I get to my junior year in high school and we *must* talk to the military recruiters. Itâs required. We can tell them any old thing we want to, but we *must* at least hear them out. Being the kind of person I am, I did. I listened. I talked, and I listened to the guyâs responses. I told him Iâd discuss it with my brother who had done basic training.
I got home, and told him that Iâd had the conversation with the recruiter. He looked me dead in the eye and said, âWhatever he told you, it was a bold-faced lie. Theyâre allowed and ENCOURAGED to lie to get recruits. Do NOT even give him a âno thanks.â Just ignore any contact.â
This was in 2001, BEFORE 9/11.
Imagine how desperate they are for recruits now.
If they ask you what time it is, refuse to even look at your watch. Donât even let them get into it. If you *have to* talk to them, tell them flatly that youâre not interested and that you arenât going to budge. And then DONâT.
Because they donât give one single solitary shit about you.

A question I get asked a lot while working at a public library is "how do you deal with homeless people?"
And the answer is, we don't.
The unhoused people who come here seeking refuge 99% of the time understand that they will be kicked out if they misbehave.
The people you have to watch out for are Jessica, who only came because the kid she didn't want had to visit for a homework assignment and she just *needs* to yell at her child for asking to borrow two books or stay an extra five minutes, or Michael, who came in to look at porn on our computers for whatever fucking reason, or Karen who just wanted to come by to throw a fit that the particular book she wanted was checked out and harrass our staff about our collection being too limited.
99% of the time, the people we need to ban are middle to upper-middle class white people while the homeless and mentally ill/disabled people mind their own damn business and are honestly some of the best patrons we have.
I bring this up because today we had a man come in. He stopped at the desk, pulled up a chair and said "I'm newly homeless and was living in my car. I'm disabled. It was impounded. It's raining. I don't have a phone and I don't know where to go tonight."
And we did what we could to help. He was incredibly kind and patient despite his obvious anxiety and stress, more than most able bodied, housed patrons are to us under much less dire conditions. I liked knowing that we were the first place he came.
We have so many people like this who come in everyday. Many are quiet and keep to themselves, but sometimes they talk to us.
They tell us about how they're taking a few courses on a scholarship they applied for from our library's computer at the local community college to get their diploma. Or ask about a manga or dvd or book we might have to help them pass the time.
One woman, who comes in daily with her tattered walker always says hello to me and likes to work on the new jigsaw puzzle with me when we set one out.
So like, treat unhoused people like people. Treat disabled people like people. I don't want my library to feel like the only safe space in the world, but I'm glad it can be one of them.
I'm so sick of hearing about how "the homeless are ruining everything" when they are some of the kindest, most respectful people here. Sometimes they mutter, might not have had a place to shower, and might need a little extra space for their backpacks but that's FINE. It Doesn't Matter Actually. None of that is a problem or any of my business to care about (unless they request help/services), and I also don't think it's any of yours.
Today a student had me talk to their mom on the phone to explain that yes, they really did have a field trip today, and yes, that does happen in college, and normally at this point (in my admittedly limited experience with calls like that) the next question is less a question and more a âwell thatâs dumb, donât you think thatâs dumbâ
but this lady asked me if snacks would be provided and if so what kind because her son was a picky eater & this poor boy is just bright red and yelling from the back seat that he packed his own lunch and snacks & mom (who is very aware sheâs on speaker phone) goes âsorry for loving you and worrying about you, you little shitâ which made him just screech the word âmomâ like he was a tween in full angst mode
& as of right now Iâve heard two students do radio checks on the other field teams where they signed off with âsorry for loving you and worrying about you, you little shitâ which gives me a very unprofessional case of the giggles

Hey so as the economy continues to get worse in the next few years, gambling companies are going to go extra hardcore predatory as people become more desperate. Yes, even more than they already are. You have to promise me right now you're not going to fall for it. No gambling, okay?

Mind you that damn is owned by Dole. Theyve known about it needing to be fixed for years and years and years. Despite having more than enough money they refuse
The state has been trying to buy it out from them for years so they can fix it, but the sale hasnât gone through
