briefly pursuing a career in animation radicalized me on this. So many stories from the industry about how you have to start with your character design as dark as possible, because INEVITABLY you'll get "notes" from higher-ups asking you to make them lighter.

In a class about making a pitch bible my teacher once role-played as a shitty executive with a classmate, pressing them in intentionally abrasive ways about why they made their characters diverse. He emphasized that we had to learn to defend these things, because the racism in the industry is extremely deliberate.

I actually do think we should discourage women from becoming housewives. Do not become financially dependent on a man. That's how a lot of women ended up dead over the years. A man gets violent suddenly and you have to choose between homelessness or potentially dying at his hand because you have an enormous gap in your resume and no degrees or certifications or anything that will help you pursue a career that will allow you to be financially independent. He owns your bank account. His name is probably the one on the car. Try and leave and he can report it stolen. Where will you go then?

Don't become a housewife.

And if you do become a housewife, take steps to protect yourself. Make sure you’re legally married, for starters; stay-at-home girlfriends have very little legal recourse to claim their partner’s assets in a breakup. Make sure your name is on the house deed/rental agreement, and have your car in your name, even if your spouse is paying for it. Have your spouse transfer money every month into an account solely in your name, so you can buy yourself things without needing permission, but also so you can save up to leave if needed.

If your spouse fights you on any of this, then don’t quit your job. The tradwife to poverty pipeline is real, and so is financial abuse.

this is also why universal basic income is inherently a feminist issue. like i actually do think people should be able to choose to be a stay at home parent or whatever but until there are meaningful social safety nets so that leaving an abusive spouse after being a housewife for an extended period of time is financially feasible for the majority of women who make that choice, yeah we should be making sure that more people are fully aware of what they're getting into when they make that choice.

like my parents relationship was abusive and my mom was a stay at home for 20+ years and when she did want to leave it took her literally years of planning to be and to actually get out. because yeah, dad owned the car, he owned the house, his name was on the bank accounts, he was financially abusive.

but the fact that she was even in that situation in the first place is because of a whole lot of societal failings.

I just saw someone say "I thought everyone knew that right-wingers never seek to understand, and in fact don't WANT to understand, the things they rail against, like gender identities" and that's true.

But I wish more people would grasp that this isn't a function of being RIGHT-wing, it's a function of being any-fucking-WING. The idea that you don't have to understand how something works in order to judge whether it's Good or Bad, and in fact trying to understand something Bad is going to contaminate you spiritually, is very much in evidence on the left as well.

there's been a housing showdown in my city recently where popular rent freezes didn't pass because lawmakers recognized that it actually exacerbated housing issues in practice, based off of observations of trials elsewhere. But people freaked out because it sounds good and was struck down.

They don't want to know about its ineffectiveness, and don't care to listen, and it's likely to shake up the local government significantly.

The left wing will ignore Platner's nazi tattoo, ignore Galindo's internment camps, ignore Piker's bigotry, ignore the holodomor, ignore antisemitism when it comes from the left, all because they don't want to understand something that isn't convenient for their worldview.

People will see horseshoe theory laid out in front of them and just tell you "but i'm right and they're wrong so they're not the same," and that's true for both wings.

It's wild to me that people in the notes are all arguing about rapists and murderers and people deserving to get their human rights taken away for doing Bad Things, and...

Yeah, sure, serial killers deserve human rights too, but isn't there a more obvious demographic you're sliding right by? Isn't there a demographic of people so thoroughly erased by human rights discourse that their rights aren't even debated, it's just taken for granted that human rights don't apply to these people?

(It's minors. I'm talking about minors. Also disabled/neurodivergent adults under institutionalization/guardianship who have been reduced to the legal status of minors.)

I literally do this as a first-day activity in my childhood studies courses.

I take a poll: "how many of you would agree that 'everyone deserves the right to privacy' is a pretty uncontroversial statement?"

when 95% of them have put their hands up, I say "now, what if I clarify that 'everyone' includes children?"

and as everyone lowers their hands slowly and gives me a confused look like a deer in headlights, I tell them "okay. this class is about what it means to not be part of 'everyone'."

Begging and pleading for people to realize that some people may not experience sexual attraction but sometimes they may be sexually aroused by certain concepts/actions. And sometimes this then means they want to participate in sex with someone so long as the concepts/actions are present.

They aren't attracted to the person they are having sex with, but they are aroused by whatever is occurring within the sexual scene.

Sex favorable aces don't just have sex because their partner wants to have sex!!! Some sex favorable aces do seek sexual stimulation with other people for their own pleasure!! Big surprise! Shocking development!!

And this is also stigmatized because it's believed you need to find someone attractive to have any drive to have sex with them! Like! No! Some of us are just more interested in their ability to perform what arouses us!

I'm posting about this because as I am presented with sources within one of my classes about asexuality I see a complete lack of talk about pleasure and what it means within asexuality. There is this constant reaffirming of sex is what the allosexual partner wants (and the asexual partner is just doing it to make their allosexual partner happy) and it's deeply frustrating that we are defining sex around sexual attraction and not looking at the fact that sex should be defined around a whole range of things!

The more I try to heal from childhood trauma the more angry I get at the way children are treated and how often the systems that are set in place to “protect” children harms them more.

Children in foster care are displaced from a home, and once they age out of the system many of them end up homeless. People who’ve been in the foster care system are estimated to make up 25%-50% of the homeless population.

And of course the system is very racist! CPS and the justice system treat black and brown families with harsher scrutiny, removing children from their custody more often than white families.
