i cannot keep quiet about this anymore.
if you're in the US or Canada and interested in learning a language using a free app please get a library card and download MANGO. it's very good and extremely free with a library card (there are many public libraries and universities using the service, so make an account and use the search feature here to find out if there's one near you).
mango currently has 72 available languages and dialects (that's right! different courses for french or canadian french! spanish or latam spanish!). it's set up basically like an audiobook with text. the idea is that the narrator explains the words while you read, and you repeat after them or say the translation out loud when prompted. there's a daily review where you go through flashcards. you can also use the flashcards at your leisure and create your own. at the end of each chapter there's a listening comprehension quiz and a reading comprehension quiz. i cannot emphasize how effective this all is. and it's free with a card.
if you're not in the US or Canada and/or looking for something more like duolingo (don't use duolingo btw tldr they fired translators and replaced them with "ai"), then try BUSUU! it only has 14 languages atm but the lessons are really descriptive and effective. it also has a feature where you can correct other people's open-ended speaking/typing exercises. you set your fluent languages, and exercises by people learning those languages will appear in your feed for you to correct. you can even add others as friends! and, much like duolingo, it has a streak and leaderboard system for you to strive for, minus the guilt-tripping owl.
busuu is free (you watch ads to unlock lessons and they're all skippable after like five seconds), although it also has paid premium/plus versions (i don't use the paid version—the language courses are available for free, and the ad system is Really unobtrusive).
so that's my wisdom for the day. mango and busuu. please check them out :)
With Duolingo doubling down on replacing contractors with AI...

Scrolled past this agakn and just can't get over how much I love it. We need to make things beautiful again and this is such a wonderful example. The beadwork on the wires of a utitarian object, contrasted with the grey concrete.
people are literally so boring a male character will kill 10000 people and steal candy from babies and theyll be like omg thats my king! but a female character is rude once and theyre like i hope she dies violently

King Arthur Baking Company is coming under fire for holding a competition exclusively for people of color-owned businesses and brands.
According to the company’s website, “Baking Pitchfest 2024” offers a product edition geared toward baking brands founded and owned by people of color across the U.S., and a bakery edition, which focuses on people of color-owned bakeries in the Northeast and Washington state. “Half mentorship, half competition, Baking Pitchfest is an accelerator program designed to foster greater inclusivity and creativity in the baking world by providing equitable opportunities for People of Color entrepreneurs,” the website states, adding that winners will receive financial support, mentorship, and exposure. But the initiative has generated outrage amongst conservatives online, who have blasted the competition eligibility rules as discriminatory against white people.
One X user critical of King Arthur Baking’s contest posted an email she received from the company in response to her complaining. “Helping build joyful, equitable communities that celebrate diversity is an important part of who we are as a company,” the email states, later adding: “We love baking with anyone and everyone. Our simple expectation is that everyone show respect for one another.”
Time to buy more King Arthur Flour!
If you need more reason to support them, they’re worker owned.
Since 2004, King Arthur has been 100% employee owned. As a result, our company is built on a foundation of transparency and collaboration, a
Also they actually are working on regenerative agriculture:
This new whole wheat flour is an innovative blend of unique wheat varieties bred to be more tolerant of the planet's changing climate.
Also they do blog articles about adaptive baking:
Baking more than usual during the holidays can aggravate symptoms of chronic fatigue. So when the baking bug bites, here are some strategies
You know, way too often I find articles talking about how the maker of some product I use is actually Evil. It's really nice to get the opposite.
Their product is also remarkably consistent! If you've ever baked something and it just didn't come out right, it's probably because the protein content of your flour wasn't the same as what the recipe author used. King Arthur has the protein content listed right on the bag, and you get very consistent results!
PSA: Unauthorized Use of My Art & Data Misuse on CivitAI
Hey, Tumblr!
I'm posting this as a warning about a platform called CivitAI. I discovered that my original art was being used without my permission in one of their AI models. When I tried to file a takedown request, I had to give them personal details (phone number, email, and original art files).
What happened next?
Zero follow up from CivitAI, except a banner on the offending model's page claiming they're "discussing it" with me-though they never actually reached out.
I started getting an overwhelming flood of spam calls-50 in about two weeks-right after I submitted my information.
This is a huge violation of trust and privacy. Please be careful when dealing with any site that requires personal data for takedown requests.
If you have any similar experiences or questions, feel free to message me. Spread the word to protect other artists and keep our art and data safe.
Thank you for reading and stay safe!

I suddenly understand why jewelry is expensive
Hopefully people will start to realize why trades in general are so expensive. You're paying for someone's experience to make a good finished product that takes skill and years of practice.
However there is also a giant gap that needs to be filled in trades. As people are aging out of jobs like tailors, carpenters, bookbinders, leatherworkers, etc, there aren't enough young people going INTO the trades to repopulate the jobs.
Please. Please. Consider going into trades.
These are the kinds of jobs people "fall into," because they aren't visible, and are never talked about.
Kids never grow up telling people they want to be a bookbinder. They don't know they even exist. And schools never ever present them as valid options. And if they do talk about them, they are treated as invalid compaired to NFL Linebacker, President, and Brain Surgeon. After all "jewelry maker" is something people do to supplement their "burger flipping" income, and not an extension of blacksmithing.
But that's the crux of it, isn't it? Crafting and trade skills are an extension of artistic skills, which are often seen as completely invalid, and a total waist of time.
As the daughter of a professional bookbinder/book restorer, I had to reblog.
reblogging because I was in a course at college that covered Artisan skills such as these. I have friends who have since gone on to do Jewellery, Carpentry, Ceramics, Glasswork AND Blacksmithing. Ironically I ‘fell into’ comics.
windows to Artisan jobs are still around, the rising interest of upcycling and restoration has brought young folk into doing them.
Boosting because Artisan trades should be valued and carried on.

'This won't work, this isn't widespread, nobody knows, we're in a bubble, blah blah blah' my mom, a 64 year old lady with no social media whose first language is spanish, told me about this before tumblr did, and said we are going to participate.
I've seen flyers for this in real life. Do it.
"Hellen Keller is not real" is a right wing propaganda. It's literally something that was pushed by eugenistic tiktokers two years ago at least because they don't believe disabled people like Hellen Keller can do anything for themselves.
someone tagged this 'no she was not a fraud and there have been other cases of deafblind people communicating'
There are entire established DeafBlind communities! There is a DeafBlind language, Protactile. There are DeafBlind people on the internet around you.
Here is a video I really liked about Protactile.
The essay "Against Access" by John Lee Clark, who is DeafBlind, goes around tumblr sometimes.
I don't want anyone to think Helen Keller is like, some mystical rare outlier, either!!!
Butler called denying health care to trans kids "an act of cruelty."
For those wondering: yes, she is saying that Democrats who abandon trans rights are using fascist logic.
