Also, still thinking about this a huge problem with the way this conversation plays out is the distinction between "this is / should be illegal", "this shouldn't be illegal, but it IS a red flag," and "this isn't a red flag, but it IS a questionable choice from a logical perspective" gets completely flattened.

Adult going after a minor = this is literally already a crime.

36 year old who serially dates 21 year olds = this is a red flag. Importantly, though, red flags are only bad because they're *potential evidence* of actual problems, they aren't themselves the problem. It *could* be that the 36 year old goes after people they think are easily manipulated. It also *could* be a coincidence. It's impossible to tell *for sure* which it is without getting into it. If it's just a coincidence, it's not a problem. Like, 100% not a problem. On the other hand, even if the way the relationship ends up playing out ends up confirming the red flag, it's whatever other *actually bad* shit that the red flag was part of a pattern &or evidence of that was the problem, not the red flag itself.

30 year old dating a 60 year old = not even a red flag. "Weird" is the worst you can say about it. But, there will be potential challenges to this relationship that there won't be to a similar age one. Are you sure you want compatible things out of a relationship as someone in a completely different life stage? If the relationship *does* work out, are you comfortable with your partner likely dying 30 years before you do? There are logistical considerations here to think through before you get into it.

Also just as an aside, sometimes the rationale isn't "wanting to date someone easily manipulated" but "being an ageist/sexist who thinks people (particularly women) become unattractive, boring and undesirable once they're out of their early twenties".

Incredibly violent take of mine but I actually don’t think you need to relate to a story in any way to enjoy it. You can enjoy a story even if you can’t point at a character and insert some aspect of your personality or identity into them. In fact I would argue the need for a character like that to be present in every single story you experience is a sign of stunted growth.

there is this controversy going on on TikTok where a girl made a video about how she is unemployed and disabled due to currently going through cancer treatment and how the loss of SNAP benefits was going to effect her. and the MAGA crowd found her and ripped her to shreds because she was a young “healthy-looking” girl with dyed hair. the most baffling part was all of the people saying things like “My dad had cancer and he worked EVERYDAY until he died! No excuses, you lazy bitch!” which is soooo wild. it is crazy how many members of the conservative ‘blue collar’ crowd love to brag about being fucked over and killed by capitalism. that is not a flex, quite the opposite, if anything that is insanely pathetic and sad. maybe your daddy would still be alive if we had socialized medicine and better sick leave policies but no, he worked himself to fucking death and you want a 20 something young woman to die the same pathetic fate. we need to start telling these people ‘that is so sad, I feel sorry for you’ instead of pretending this is in the scope of good work ethic. because it’s fucked up the things they’re going through and patting themselves on the back for. maybe if they felt less proud of being fucked over by the system, they’d work to change it.
