The photos of Chinese sportswoman, track and field athlete Li Meizhen, where she finished a marathon despite of her periods was started unexpectedly, went viral again.

The episode took place back in 2024, when Li was competing in the Hengshui Lake Marathon. The athlete needed to complete two championship marathons that season to earn points for her team. When she was 5 miles from the finish line, Li’s period arrived. But rather than quitting the race to prevent visible stains, the runner powered through, aware that completing the marathon was much more important than getting some period blood on her clothes and legs.

“Thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement,” Li wrote on social media. “Honestly, I was afraid that people online would say, ‘Has she gone crazy? Why didn’t she withdraw when this happened?’ But by the time it happened, I’d already passed the 34-kilometre (about 21 miles) mark. It would have been a shame to withdraw from a championship race. If I withdrew, I would have had to run another full marathon. That’s why I was determined to finish, even if my time wasn’t great. Thank you for your concern, I’m okay and nothing serious happened.”

Li is far from the first marathon runner to deal with the unexpected start of her period on race day. In 2015, Kiran Gandhi decided to run the London Marathon without a pad or a tampon to avoid the risk of chafing or worse, toxic shock from a backup tampon. “To me, it made far more sense to do the race without any foreign objects in my body, take some Midol, and just run,” Gandhi wrote for TIME Magazine. “While I didn’t think this would be such a big deal, as I started to run, I realized it was. I realized that, while I had the freedom to reject my own shame that day, millions of people who menstruate around the world do not because of the stigma still associated with periods.”

Gandhi also stated, “While menstrual practices vary across different cultures, menstrual stigma is the global common thread. The menstrual cycle is the bedrock of the human race. Without it we wouldn’t exist. If we want to make the world a better place, we have to start combatting taboo now—and, in the process, make it easier for women and girls to access their fullest potential. The good news is that this is something we can actually win within our lifetime. The future is female.”

The idea that male and female do not present as two neutral, equal human variations, but that there is some default, sexless human body is worrying. The idea that sex is composed of a series of parts that we can refigure at will. The idea that before puberty, we are sexless and able to be molded. The idea that natural puberty is as unnatural and irreversible as a synthetic one. This idea is deeply anti-human- how is no one seeing this??

I don’t think transgender people themselves should be called gross, or mutilated or monsters, I do not think transitioning itself somehow ruins someone, I am not talking about them or their bodies, but the ideology. How are people not realizing how pseudoscientific and hateful this rhetoric is becoming? The idea that sex is a series of parts, that somehow we are naturally sexless, that our bodies are not complete and connected wholes, is increasingly becoming part of the transgender movements rhetoric? The body as parts. People with utererus, people with prostates, people with penises. We are all just a series of commodities, to be bought and sold, our human bodies are the enemy, our male and female forms are aberrations, mistakes that were forced on our sexless default. We exist beyond our body. We are more than our body. To define ourself by our body is reductive, dehumanizing. And, of course, the biggest voice against this currently is right-wing, but not because of their pro-human stance, because they think that our bodies belong to god. They were the ones who got us here in the first place! The idea that our bodies aren’t ‘us’ but are merely limitations, the idea that the female body in particular is grotesque, only for breeding, bleeding, serving, penetrating. I’m scared at how further this is going to go.

This is exactly why when we say that women are adult human females, TRAs will say things like “Oh so you’re reducing being a woman to having a vagina?”

It never occurred to me to fire back, “Why do you think that having a vagina is the only thing that makes me female?”

The female body is an intricately complex system that impacts our health and our lives every day, and the vagina is not the defining trait of the female sex but a statistically reliable indicator of it. What TRAs refuse to accept is that having a vagina means your body is supposed to have other components of the female reproductive system. This is not transphobic. This is not intersexist.

My body is both intelligent and messy and beautiful and gross and impressive. Every cell, every hormone, every muscle is why I am alive and strong. My uterus isn't there just to make babies. There are studies showing that it affects cognitive function and plays a role in memory. And my ovaries don't just make eggs. In actuality, the ovaries create hormones that impact bone density, cholesterol levels, heart health, and mood. There are things about my female body that work right, and there are things that don't work right. There are advantages I have over a typical male body, but there are also disadvantages I have compared to the male body. There is nothing about this that I have to be ashamed of.

To tell us that the female body, as a complex and holistic system, simply does not exist is how they can gaslight young girls into thinking that their bodies have not been taken advantage of by males in nearly every society since the dawn of time. It is how you squash any discussion of medical misogyny and doom millions of girls to a future of suffering with endometriosis, PCOS, and countless other disorders. It is how you convince a young girl who doesn't like her breasts because she doesn't like that boys ogle and grope them that it is because her breasts are the problem that must be removed instead of the men who raised these boys to believe that sexual access to her body without concern for her humanity was their birth right. It is how they convince a young girl that if she is poor and left to suffer by a society that does not care for her safety and well-being, that she can simply make an OnlyFans so that all men have access to her body which was never really hers to begin with, so there's no reason why this should be traumatic in the first place.

And of course right-wingers are able to drown us out with their constant refrain of “don’t take testosterone or get a hysterectomy - you need to embrace your natural, god-given role as a subservient feminine baby factory!” Which makes TRA’s all the more eager to chop off their most politicized female body parts in order to escape this fate.

So when we try to argue that being female does not make us feminine, subservient baby factories, and that we don’t have to alter our bodies in order to deserve rights and dignity, we can hardly get the words out before they’re buried in a chorus of “You’re trying to force me to have babies and wear makeup!! TERFs are conservatives! TERFs are misogynistic bioessentialists!!”

I do hold genderists responsible for their misogynistic beliefs, but I also understand that they are just reactionaries, and the bigger problem here is the threat of right-wingers who are constantly working to subjugate us and insisting that our own bodies are to blame for their male supremacist agenda.

And I was going to give them the benefit of doubt, since I don't know much about the climate in Northern Africa, aside from Morroco and Egypt, which seem like really hot places, so you know, maybe it's normal there?

never really was the one to shave but i'm glad to report that this summer is finally the one where i have zero shame or discomfort left over having other people notice body hair on me. it's neither ugly nor beautiful to me anymore and it's no more strange now than my lashes or my eyes or the hair on my head. there's no reason to worry over whether it fits the social situation/goes along with the rest of the outfit/makes people pass judgement on me. i can just go out as i am and it be okay. and so can you. by the way. a change in the mind is possible as long as you take steps towards it. it's going to be okay.

You normalize your outlook on the world around you. It starts with you.

I stopped shaving when I was in my late teens; I'm in my 30s now. It started with a bit of insecurity, worrying if people would see and judge.

Then I didn't care at all. And I didn't care at all for a looooong time.

And now, it sticks out to me when I do see women with shaved legs, arms, bodies. It hit me like a truck earlier this month. I was in a bus, woman across from me was sitting cross-legged. Shaved. I caught myself thinking, for the first time with clarity, "that looks so unnatural. It looks like baby skin." And not in the judge-y way we might, but very exclusively in the 'I have for real, actually internalized what a natural woman's body looks like and that ain't it' way.

I think in some way this is the radical self-acceptance and female-acceptance many people - women especially - need to deeply internalize. It is deprogramming 101. Accepting the baseline of reality is just the first step. Understanding fundamentally the departures from that reality observed in others come way later
