The idea of porn being ‘inherently exploitative and evil’ isn’t an idea that got plucked out of the ether, or was taken from some Christian guilt. No, radfem analysis of pornography in terms of the material content, it as a product and it as a form of ideology and propaganda, has resulted in us being able to address and discuss it a lot more honestly, deeply and frankly than anyone else. The idea of pornography being ideologically neutral, meanwhile, is an idea that got plucked out of the ether; a retroactive justification for a continuing of social norms.

We live in a patriarchy where the default view of sex for a the vast majority of written human history and across culture (not like, every culture, but enough that it’s shaped the collective memory) has been some variation on the belief that men are naturally dominant and women naturally submissive and masochistic - so men ‘claim’ women and ‘consent’ is the point at which women give in and submit to them, and said ‘consent’ is merely an agreement, which conveniently could be enshrined in law via marriage. So it may be worth considering that it might take more than 2ish generations embracing ‘sex positivity’ to completely overhaul the most entrenched and long-lasting societal oppression built around sexual violence. Also, analysing and building these theories around pornography can also explain why all that religious guilt around sex exists.
