Unless you were a tech at NASA back in the day, when one time some hydrogen a) escaped in a particular building, and b) caught on fire. This was extremely difficult because hydrogen does NOT burn on the visible spectrum humans evolved to see (and flee). Rather, it technically does, but it’s so pale that in practice, no one could see it. Additionally, pure hydrogen burns without smoke and with so little ambient heat that you can’t really sense it till you walk into it. So, per the lore, for a few days all the techs in that building just walked around brandishing brooms in front of them like lances. If your broom lit on fire, congrats! You have located more burning hydrogen! Do not proceed!
oh my god it’s real and it was LITERALLY called “the broom method” holy shit
reminder for all hockey fans:
netflix is making a hockey show called "the sticks" that is based on a very real tragedy that occured in canada in 2018.
the show follows a minnesota high school team after their bus crashes and coming back to hockey afterwards.
in 2018, the humboldt broncos' (a junior A team made up of 18-22 year olds) bus was hit by a tractor trailer on a highway intersection. 16 people (10 players, 2 coaches, and 4 team staff members) were killed, along with 13 other players severely injured.
the memory of the humboldt broncos crash is an incredibly sensitive subject carrying a lot of trauma to both the survivors, their families, and deceased's families. the trajectory of hockey in canada was changed significantly after this tragedy.
despite this, netflix has decided to make a show using the death of young hockey players for profit. they did not consult the survivors, nor the deceased's families. they stole a canadian story for a feel-good cash grab.
i understand wanting to watch shows about hockey, but this is not the show to watch. do not give it attention, as the humboldt broncos' memories deserve to be theirs and theirs alone to share.
This is how Netflix advertises the show btw… They’re calling it “your new hockey obsession”. It’s disgusting.
One of the kids on the Broncos lived on my block. A coworker lost her brother in law. This tragedy was widely felt in Canada as a whole - flags at half-mast level.
None of the families even knew about this show until the media started asking how they felt.
It is taking a tragedy and turning it into a cash cow.
This was such a deeply-felt issue that even the truck driver pleaded guilty and has tried to make amends. (And as he is facing deportation after his sentence, some of the families have even started supporting him being allowed to stay in the country.) There is a real story you could be telling about community and resilience that is not just turning one of the worst days for THE NATION into cheap thrills and sensationalism.
Don't watch. Don't tweet. Pretend this show does not exist.

was doing a first aid course and it kept talking about how when applying first aid to a child you have to ask the PARENT for consent and how the child's consent is not enough unless you cannot reach the parent. and then immediately after there was a unit on shaken baby syndrome, and then mentioned abuse as a common source of children getting injured. and they didn't see the irony there. i later asked the instructor what to do about parental consent if the medical emergency was from the parent abusing the child and she was like "you still need to obtain parental consent. you can report the abuse though" not even acknowledging how fucked the whole system is. i hate it here. youth rights now
People have been saying for years that these political hipsters did to I/P what they did to BLM in 2020. It's 6 years later and it still gets me that these (often white and at the very least, majority non-black) Leftists (tm) hijacked a whole political movement surrounding the murder of George Floyd and made it about themselves and their desire to be seen as cool through advocating for completely unrealistic, fringe positions that never had a snowball's chance in hell of happening. Obviously, the GOP played a big role in trying to kill the momentum for police reform in 2020, but it really didn't help convince normies that criminal justice reform was desperately needed when you had so many people earnestly saying the only solution was something that everyone knows will never happen (that being prison abolition)
And now some of them have the audacity to be like "lulz well we all said crazy things during Woke 1." Even aside from that further contributing to the bastardization of the term "woke"--which originated with black Americans and was used to talk about being socially aware of racial injustice--it shows that they merely see political movements as fads. And they've done the same thing with I/P, spending years talking about an issue they still refuse to read any real information about (from actual sources, not tiktok) because it's a popular hashtag, makes them feel cool among their friends, and is a replacement for an actual hobby and personality. A lot of college students in particular treated I/P as a fucking after school club in 2024. So at a time when people could have listened to Palestinians advocating for peace, such as Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, they just saw a bunch of privileged poseurs celebrating in the streets after Jews were raped and massacred.
And like the tweet says, they'll eventually casually drop the cause with a shrug and move on, because at the end of the day, this is all a pastime for them and doesn't affect them directly.
I hate cigarettes so much I hate that smoking is becoming cool again I hate that we're becoming contrarian hipsters about this disgusting habit that has literally killed so many people and destroyed so many lives I'm so serious we need to become absolute killjoys about this again it's time to go 90s scolds on cigarettes until the scourge is wiped out entirely.
It’s cool until you can only travel as far as your oxygen tank, and you’re confined to a hospital bed in your 30’s-40’s because it finally caught up to you and you’re too weak to move, to eat, to breathe, and your throat is mangled and your voice unrecognizable, and all of your dreams jarred and shelved because cancer has taken your money, peace, and health.
But hey the cotton candy vapes smell nice don’t they?
I find it esp. wild any progressive or anti-capitalist folk romanticizes cigarettes! Those companies are real fucking shitheads- like the most directly obvious making money from killing people next to war profiteers. Like decades of them paying folks to lie about cancer till they got some slaps on the hands.
The tobacco companies are some vile ass shit holes. It’s disheartening to see anyone fall into their traps.
It is a hard addiction to defeat. Please do yourself a favor and don’t start.
You know who died of smoking (COPD, but, due to years and decades of smoking)?
Mr. Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy. And he was so concerned that nobody should follow his example!
Make Mr. Spock proud today and begin the process of quitting! If you're already in that process, think of how proud he'd be of you!
i think retail workers should be allowed to track down every customer who takes stuff out of the fridges or freezers and leaves it in a decidedly non-refridgirated aisle, go into those customers' houses while the customers aren't home, and take everything out of their fridge and freezer and leave it out in the open
Transphobia is being signed into law in the UK. Let's fight it together.
I am begging the UK trans community and its allies to attend the rescheduled Mass Lobby at Parliament, now on Wed Sept 9th, 1pm-5pm, organised by Trans Solidarity Alliance.
The law around trans equality is fundamentally broken. Government inaction is hanging trans people and organisations out to dry - with a con
The new EHRC Code of Practice pushes trans people out of toilets, hospital wards, and community spaces. It normalises gender policing based on appearance and stereotypes. It became statutory guidance in the UK on August 5th, 2026.
Trans people are now legally their assigned gender at birth and must join gendered spaces accordingly, but if they are perceived as their lived gender, they can also be ejected from those spaces. The guidance says: either break the law, or don’t pass too well.
A mass lobby is where you invite your MP to discuss your concerns with you in-person. Our demands have changed. Ask your MP to:
Write to Ministers and Prime Minister Andy Burnham to say they are profoundly concerned by the rolling back of trans rights, and that they believe that it is time for Parliament to legislate to protect equality for trans people.
Ask parliamentary questions focused on protecting trans people’s rights and defending trans people’s abilities to live safe and dignified lives.
Speak up both inside and outside Parliament in defence of trans people’s rights.
Meet regularly with trans constituents to understand their lived realities.
Your MP does not have to be an ally, they do not have to respond to your email for you to show up and greencard them (details below the cut.) What matters is that as many people as possible show up.
I cannot stress this enough: Showing up in person matters. It is much more effective than petitions, emails, and letters.
We have already had some wins because we took action. The 2026 EHRC guidance has already rolled back its most harmful elements because of mass campaigning by individuals like us, and groups like The Good Law Project. This summer, 166 MPs signed the Early Day Motion 240 to reject the EHRC Code of Practice, because of our campaigning. That is 1 in 4 MPs.
It is a horrible, stressful time, and I am so sorry if you're trans and live in the UK. But I was at last year's mass lobby and the line for greencarding alone stretched around the back gates. It was a record breaking mass lobby and made us impossible to ignore. Let's do even better this time. Details under the cut:
