Astronomy I-
Archaeology: it is mandatory, it is ritualic.
Fun fact about archeology!
if it's a rock and you lick it, your tongue got a little dirty.
If it's a bone, it sticks to your tongue.
Bones remember being inside a body where they could be wet all the time, and they want to return to that state.
Cheers science side of Tumblr. Never say that again though
Chemistry you absolutely can. Trust me. You don’t want to though.
It’s a shame how many people are missing out on quality pieces of literature all because they refuse to suffer through 244 hours of the CW’s Supernatural
Yes, and, this? This is actually what an “if you liked that, maybe you’ll like this!” algorithm is trying to replicate, in its own clumsy way. The basic idea is that, if you like Thing X, then you may like other things that people who liked Thing X also liked.
Only the algorithm has no actual reasoning ability, or understanding of what it’s doing--it’s just wandering around bumping into things, looking for patterns that sorta match. Like a sack of ferrets tracking a scent trail through a department store, and the store is trying to tell you that the ferrets are highly skilled personal shoppers.
AO3, on the other hand, is set up so that you can find out directly from other human beings who like Thing X, what else they liked. It probably wouldn’t work in a department store--hence the sack-of-ferrets system--but fandom is a gift economy, so it does.
A further variant on this is to see who bookmarked the stories you love, and investigate their bookmarks. If they seem reliably appealing to you and they're being actively updated, you can also periodically check in on their bookmarks to see what's new.
[Image description: A Twitter thread by sen (@SenLinYuWrites) that reads “I have been reading fanfic for decades. I am going to tell you the secret to finding good stuff without an algorithm.
Find a fic you fucking love, like everything about it hits your buttons, writing, characterization, tropes, kinks, ending, etc.
Read everything written by that author regardless of the stats, since they've already proven themselves to write stories you like.
When you've read all of their stories, go to their bookmarks. They probably read the same quality and kinds stuff they like to write.
Find a story in the bookmarks you fucking love, like everything about it hits your buttons, writing, characterization, tropes, kinks, ending, etc.
Return to step 2.
Repeat ad infinitum.” end description.]

Also, readers... BOOKMARK THE THINGS YOU LOVED. I get so sad when I go to someone's profile and they don't have any bookmarks. That being said, I'm sorry my 1300 bookmarks are an unorganized mess 😅
But luckily, you can filter people's bookmarks just like you filter a tag search! So even if you don't organize them or tag them yourself at all, I can go into your bookmarks and filter them down to the pairing/trope I want and sort by whatever.
AO3 is just... so much better than any algorithm. Because only you know what you mean when you want something "just like this." Maybe for one fic you mean this writing style, and you go read the author's other stuff. Maybe for another fic it's some trope you're suddenly in the mood for, and you can use tags/filters. You have total control!

🎉 Happy Indictment Day 🎉
I just wrote 8 pages when I haven't written in months and was beginning to think I'd never be able to again. Idk what it is, but I am sharing and manifesting this energy for every writer who sees this. May you write 8 quality pages effortlessly and find joy writing once more
I love all the amazing CR6 content we're getting!
“if you can’t brush your teeth that’s fine uwu one step at a time” posts are supportive and that’s great but I’m about to have a 4.4k$ dental bill because I wasn’t taking care of my teeth when I was super depressed so uhh brush your fuckin teeth
the reason I bring up those posts is because every time I saw one I felt less and less bad about not brushing them and when my teeth actually started causing problems it made my MH worse because I was having horrible anxiety about my teeth getting worse and now I’m facing procedures that will probably be pretty painful and will definitely be expensive so I kinda got some beef with the anti-recovery culture on this site
switch up the language a little.
didn’t brush your teeth this morning? forgive your past self and do it now!
woke up at 3am and realize you didn’t brush your teeth before bed? 11pm you was tired, forgive yourself, and just do it now!
“it’s okay” DOES lose helpfulness when you forget that it’s supposed to mean “don’t beat yourself up about mistakes, and don’t let it keep you from doing something different.”
present you and future you don’t have to suffer just bc past you slipped. past you was going through it. give them a break. but, please, don’t let that stop you from doing something different. 11pm wants 3am you to feel better, even if they couldn’t make it happen.
it vexes me terribly when people posit being in a fandom and enjoying a piece of media for its themes as seperate things because like. I get into fandoms in order to talk about what I like in a work's themes? I write analysis and fic in order to further explore a work's themes? I get invested in character dynamics because I think their contrasting arcs and motivations are thematically interesting? like these are the same thing to me, I don't get how they're meant to be incompatible.
#it's not even just anti-fandom people who say this too I sometimes see fannish people say 'analytical engagment' is a total fun killer and #??????#I get unprecedented endorphin rushes from symbology and close reading WHAT are you talking about
You know that trope in fiction when someone offers a hand and pulls the other person up but they pull too hard and the other person ends up pressed against their chest and they stand there staring at each other for too long neither of them moving and you absolutely know what they're both thinking about? Yeah I love that. Gimme more of whatever you call that.
Some internet language things I really like:
Phrases like “that’s certainly a thing”, “it’s so shaped”, or “one of the most animals” (is there a name for this?)
when people write with little to no punctuation like they are just so done
More specifically, asking questions without punctuation i.e. ‘what’ or ‘why’. It’s like, you want to know but also you are resigned to the answer?
When people capitalise The Thing for emphasis - particularly if they add a trademark symbol to really drive The Point™ home
How we use both bold and italic text for emphasis, but they convey it in different ways and I can’t quite explain how
Responding to things exclusively with punctuation, because sometimes words fail you and all you can say is !!!

hate what people did to the dead dove tag
mothers and fuckers of the jury. "Dead dove: do not eat" is a label on a bag in the fridge. It means "the content of this bag is exactly what is labeled". It does not mean "trigger warning uhhh something". In fact, it means the exact opposite of "trigger warning uhhh something", because tou use it with other tags. You write a fucked up fic with extreme violence and gore, you tag it as "extreme violence", "gore" and you tag it with "dead dove: do not eat". You write a fic with emotional abuse, gaslighting and manipulation, you tag it with "emotional abuse", "gaslighting" and "dead dove: do not eat". You write a fic with your extremely niche kink that appeals to like 3 other people and may skeeve out the rest of the fandom, you tag that with your kink and "dead dove: do not eat". It's so people know you're really mean the content warnings.
It's NOT a catch-all term for "uhhh this may be fucked idk". TAG YOUR SHIT GENEROUSLY.
#I've said it before I'll say it again #''dead dove: do not eat'' is the fanfic equivalent of ''warning: contains peanuts'' on a jar of peanut butter (via @phoenixiancrystallist)
