LGBTQ DnD Podcast Alert!

I don’t advertise the podcast often enough here, but since it’s Pride and I know people are always looking for new queer creators to support, consider checking out the Let’s Be Legendary podcast. We have three ongoing shows, two Patreon-exclusive ($5/mo for all the episodes), and one totally free public show that’s nearing the end of its fourth season. Incredibly binge-able, lots of varied content, and Extremely Gay.

Our public show is called the Feywild West and follows two (lesbian) bounty hunters as they navigate their relationship and confront the ghosts of their pasts, learning who they are and how to live in a politically-charged and increasingly hostile world. It has werewolves, fey, Good Ol’ Fashioned Western Train Robberies, a massive cast of gay and trans characters, found family, and cold, hard revenge. You can listen to this on any platform where podcasts are found.

Our first Patreon show, the adventures of which are voted on by Patrons, is Bonus Round, our goof game starring an undead warlock and Tabaxi rogue (with the newly added characters of a wood elf Circle of Spores druid and dwarf vengeance paladin) doing dungeon crawls and one-shots with silly stories and outcomes.

Most anti phone advice is so inane and regurgitated to me but one thing I’ve been thinking about for days is “social media is okay, but the real danger comes in when you think your phone should be your go to during your limited pockets of leisure” like that’s literally the truest thing ever

It really is true that after a long shift or a hard study session or a tiring workout the first thing I think to do is doom scroll to “reward” myself………. But as much as I try to combat my screen I’ve never truly delved into why my phone should be my go to during my downtime. Like why is it the reward . Why is it not taking a nap. Or getting a treat. Or calling a friend . Or even reading a book. It’s like I do those things w the idea in mind that that’s when I’m “on” but what if they rly should be my downtime rewards instead of phone time

And this comes from someone who does not necessarily think social media is the devil bc I totally understand why people use it and how it makes connecting easier…… but I see older patients all the time and it’s so striking to me how they don’t have attention issues and how their reward system is wired so differently. My 52 year old boss rewards herself for an 8 hour work day by taking a run after work. Like immediately after work. She does have a phone, and she does use it, but it’s not her reward during downtime at all. She does not need a phone break in between things, because those things are what nourish her. And that’s just fascinating to me bc for my generation a peek at their phone is the ultimate reward

LAST THING bc i feel like if this reaches more people they’ll be like ummm reading or talking to a friend arent downtime activities and like okay that’s so fair……. I think the whole point is finding a default downtime activity that feels right for *you* while also not taxing you mentally. Like this is not me saying go full blackout on your phone. Also it’s just true that doom scrolling is not as passive as people think it is (I literally do it too) and your brain is still burning out from taking in so much at once, so investigating if it’s the holy grail “brain off” activity really is valid

If I'm trying to figure out a solution to a time sensitive situation and have to watch a 2-3mins long ad followed by ANOTHER ad, I am automatically clicking away from it to scour the internet for the solution.

My grandfather and my godfather (a beloved neighbor and dear family friend) had a long standing bet- for one dollar- about who would die first. Both of them being slightly pessimistic (in the funny way), they both insisted that they themselves would be the first to die. Any time my grandfather had a health scare, he’d gleefully call up my godfather to boast that he’d be passing “any day now” and he was sure to win the bet. It was a big family joke and they were always amiably sparring and comparing notes about who was in worse shape, medically speaking.

When my grandfather was in hospice care dying of liver cancer, my godfather was quite ill also. It took him great effort to make the journey to see his dying friend. As he came into the room, supported by a family member, he shuffled to my grandpa’s bedside and silently handed him a dollar bill. He was ceding his loss of the bet, as they both knew who was going first. My grandpa had been in quite bad shape for a while and was no longer able to speak but let me tell you he snatched that dollar with unexpected strength and literally laughed aloud. He knew exactly what the gesture meant and he couldn’t help but find the humor within the grief. It was the last time any of us heard my grandpa laugh, as he passed shortly after.

When I talk about my appreciation for “dark humor” I’m not so much thinking about edgy jokes, but rather the human instinct to somehow, impossibly, both find and appreciate the absurdity that is so often folded into the profound grief of life and death. When I tell this story I think it kind of perturbs people sometimes, but it’s honestly one of my favorite memories about two men I really deeply admired. I could never hope for anything more than for my loved ones to remember me laughing until the very end, and taking joy in a little joke as one of my final acts.

What is...

Clutch is a Pen and Paper RPG without any defined classes or races. In place of these, players choose Edges, Quirks, and Abilities. Abilities being things like spells and maneuvers are their martial equivalent, maneuvers. Quirks background or genetic features, things that your character would possess just from growing up essentially. Edges are the main abilities of clutch, their what differentiates one character from another, and you can lose them. Whenever a character goes to 0 HP, instead of falling unconscious, they instead lose one of their edges and their health resets. 

Clutch also has extensive and streamline rules for Exploration, with different environmental effects for biomes and climate. With easy to use rules for Hunting, Foraging, and Fishing when you run out of rations. Clutch also has a system for diseases when your character is a bit under the weather.

Characters don't level up the traditional way in Clutch. Instead, much like games such as Chronicles of Darkness or Vampire the Masquerade you gain xp and spend it like currency to buy certain abilities while on downtime. You gain XP by failing. Any time you fail a roll, miss an attack, lose an edge, or go unconscious, you gain one XP.

One of the common mistakes I see for people relying on "AI" (LLMs and image generators) is that they think the AI they're interacting with is capable of thought and reason. It's not. This is why using AI to write essays or answer questions is a really bad idea because it's not doing so in any meaningful or thoughtful way. All it's doing is producing the statistically most likely expected output to the input.

This is why you can ask ChatGPT "is mayonnaise a palindrome?" and it will respond "No it's not." but then you ask "Are you sure? I think it is" and it will respond "Actually it is! Mayonnaise is spelled the same backward as it is forward"

All it's doing is trying to sound like it's providing a correct answer. It doesn't actually know what a palindrome is even if it has a function capable of checking for palindromes (it doesn't). It's not "Artificial Intelligence" by any meaning of the term, it's just called AI because that's a discipline of programming. It doesn't inherently mean it has intelligence.

So if you use an AI and expect it to make something that's been made with careful thought or consideration, you're gonna get fucked over. It's not even a quality issue. It just can't consistently produce things of value because there's no understanding there. It doesn't "know" because it can't "know".

its been just over a year since i posted this and i still encounter people saying things like "i asked chatgpt and..." or "i made this with chatgpt and...". and these arent like teenagers or students they're adult professionals using this shit for their job. i dont know how people live like this

I don't know how to make this any more clear but if you use ChatGPT to do work you're only hampering yourself.

If you stop using it (or Co-Pilot or any other bullshit AI helper) you will learn and grow more, develop new skills, and become a more valuable employee at work and/or do better at school. There's no shortcut to developing useful skills, you just gotta keep working on it.
